Obsessable:PlayStation Home Beta first impressions

Ultimately, Obsessable found much about PlayStation Home to be pretty, but disappointing. There is a clubhouse feature where you can purchase your own club to be proprietor of for $4.99, which might be interesting for a while until Sony starts charging a monthly fee for the right to run a clubhouse come March 2009. Right now the entire experience feels too much like a prettier version of Second Life with Sony hiding behind every plant and building trying to sell you something and not giving you enough free things to freely enjoy the experience. We walked up to the door pictured below with the nice apartment building pictured beyond, but the door is locked. Until Sony starts unlocking some of these doors and working on making the experience fun rather than potentially profitable, we're not optimistic of the success of the PlayStation Home platform once it leaves beta. (Home, PS3)

it's fun
to imagine an army of anxious xbots running all over the net to find negative ps3 news

this one is especially tasty since xb!tches pay just to be on xbl

Yea... But at least you don't pay JUST to be in home or on the psn.

I told my friends that Home wasn't going to be free and now the truth comes out. You have to pay for premium access which is fine and all but you'd think that with all the advertisements abound in Home space that you'd see more free items available.
From all the reviews I've read of Home they all seem to disappointed in what Home is offering now. I'm also disappointed in what Sony has out now. After waiting for 2 years for this to come out and I was hoping for quite a bit more. I understand this is a free service as is PSN but if Sony wants to keep people coming to Home they have to make it worth it. I'd buy a whole room of furniture for my house if the price was a dollar or two for them all. More than likely we're looking at 5 to 10 bucks for a house full if not more. Sweat shirts are .49 each. You spend $5 for your own space in the mall. Now do you have to pay for all the clothing or what not you put in there to sell to other Home users? I'm betting you are. Sounds like a lot of money having to be spent for what is supposed to be a gateway for gamers to meet friends and then go online to play games.
Now don't get my wrong; I'm ok with Home but I just wanted more as do all the other reviewers that are disappointed in Home's current form. This isn't just a few handful of people either it's quite a bit actually; so we all can't be wrong can we?

As a first impression I think home at it's core does what it has to and at least that's free. It's too bad that the extra touch will not be free of charge but i'm pretty sure not everything won't be charged such as the redbull game and whatnot. I'm not gonna use that old line of "wait til next year" i'm just gonna say that take it for what it is and you will see it grow from a barebones app to something much more.

@dark i agree with much of what you say.

My thing about Home
is that it doesn't seem to do anything to make my gaming experience on my PS3 quicker or better. I see no reason to not just press on the game disc in the XMB to hop into LBP, Resistance 2, etc. instead of logging into home. It is definitely good that it is somewhat free, and not mandatory.
