"The highest-rated game ever in Russia!" isn't exactly the kind of marketing hook that earns you big sales in the West. This is the section of the world notorious for producing games with great titles (The Stalin Subway?) and abysmal gameplay. If that's ever to change, it'll be development shops like Katauri Interactive that lead the way into a new era for the former Eastern Bloc. King's Bounty, a beautifully designed and elegant turn-based strategy game, started its life as Battle Lords, an interesting "homage" to the classic New World Computing title that's cited as the predecessor to the equally classic Heroes of Might & Magic series. Katauri's new version ended up becoming an under-the-radar gem that deserves more attention from gamers than it will probably get.
