The 50 Biggest Game Franchises of the Next-Generation

Chris Stead writes:

"Funny thing about scores and sales: they don't always see eye to eye. Every now and again a Call of Duty or a Grand Theft Auto will come out and smash it up commercially and critically, and then you find out that Carnival Games – which we gave a 2/10 – has sold over two million copies. It starts you thinking about what really is the biggest franchise of the next-generation? Is the obvious choice, or something else altogether?"

these are sales.... i play games, not sell them...

Fishy Fingers3659d ago

Yeah, headline could have read, "The 50 biggest SELLING...."

MiloGarret3659d ago

I think that's why the headline is "biggest", not best, or greatest.

Cenobia3659d ago

I thought this was an article about big sequels next gen or something...You know, since next gen isn't this gen.

Also, this website needs to stop putting everything on 10 different pages. It's really fudging annoying.

Puts a few franchises in perspective. It will be interesting to see how things change next year, with Res Evil and Gran Turismo, Bioshock 2 and Uncharted 2. How will Killzone and Halo Wars sell? What about Halo: ODST, it could drive that brand up a few notches for sure!

Foxgod3659d ago

True, same for GeoW3.
Sonic seems to be pretty high in the list, same for need4speed.
Wonder why so many people keep buying that stuff.

Fishy Fingers3659d ago

Thing is, the majority of the games ahead of Halo will also have further iterations releasing next year. So it could be difficult to move up more than 1 or 2 spots.

SixZeroFour3659d ago

thats what i was wondering...the halo trilogy easily sold over 20mil copies combined, i wonder why they only used the highest selling halo game, but for cod, mario, and wii they used a couple titles

im sure msg wouldve been higher in the list also if they used the other title's units sold instead of just msg4's units sold

SlappingOysters3659d ago

but that would negate the point of the article as it is talking specifically about the Wii, X360 and PS3

SixZeroFour3658d ago

oh right...i forgot the headline

when you have games like

Wii Fit , Wii Music ,Wi Play
Carnival Games in the top 10..

things aren't looking good for the future , luckily this is based of cumulative sales , and not based off quality..

Foxgod3659d ago

sadly, sales decide the market direction, thankfully the wii is in a league of its own.

BIGBOSS083659d ago

sales? sales have nothing to do with how good a game is. misleading headline.

MiloGarret3659d ago

No it isn't. It's spot on. Biggest, not best.

Fishy Fingers3659d ago (Edited 3659d ago )

Why were 4 Wii games bundled together at #1? I wouldnt say they were part of the same franchise.

SlappingOysters3659d ago

I think Wii <game> has become synonmous with a certain type of game experience for many users. Otherwise why would they keep doing it.

wonder what numbers Wii Sports 2 will do.

P.S It also means nintendo have shipped a lot of peripherals!
