GameShark: Mosby's Confederacy Review

The theme is well chosen and there is just enough going on and just enough decisions to make for the game to be a pleasant diversion. With the similarly light but wholly original Hinterland, Tilted Mill has developed a business model that allows quick development of better than average games at low cost, for both them and their consumers. They won't win a lot of prizes with these games, and Mosby's Confederacy has many of the same problems that Hinterland has – some lack of clarity, repetitiveness, etc. But the strengths outweigh the weaknesses and Mosby's is absolutely worth a close look.

The Wargamer: Mosby's Confederacy Review

The Wargamer writes: "Political correctness and wargames aren't typically thought of…one way or the other. Wargamers think nothing of sitting down to a game on the Eastern Front where the Second World War saw some of the grimmest fighting between Germans and Soviets – neither particularly palatable in their historical conduct of the war. Yet wargamers can parse the historical fact from gaming fun and move on with their hobby. To outsiders this may seem strange, but it's little different than a college sports fan cheering for his school's rival because of some odd twist that places his team's game rankings in a better light if the rival team wins, too."

GamesRadar: Mosby's Confederacy Review

GamesRadar writes: "Mosby's Confederacy is inspired by the actions of John 'The Gray Ghost' Mosby, a Rebel cavalry leader who specialized in raiding Union lines and having a cool nickname. And it's reviewed right now. Let's start by doffing our caps to Tilted Mill. Instead of grinding out yet another game about Gettysburg, they've chosen to put players in control of a small band of hell-raising, Bourbon-swilling skirmishers. Brilliantly, every soldier has a name, combat stats and a home town which they refuse to stray far from."

You'll love

* A great idea
* Turn-based parts are fun
* Cool historical context

You'll hate

* Not tactically luscious
* Poor enemy AI
* Uninvolving environment

Out of Eight: Mosby's Confederacy Review

Out of Eight writes: "Remember Mel Gibson in The Patriot? He led a rag-tag group of commoners against the evil British and their evil red coats of redness during the American Revolution. I'm not quite sure how historically accurate that may be, but it sure makes for some exciting over-the-top violence. Slightly closer to reality is Mosby's Confederacy, a strategy game that involves the exploits of John Singleton Mosby and his guerilla-like raids against Union supplies and troops. Rag-tag group? Check. Hit-and-run tactics? Check. Mel Gibson? Well, two out of three ain't bad."
