Sony Commercializes World's First 12.25 Megapixel CMOS Image Sensor for Mobile Phones

Sony has announced the development of the finest-yet pixel-pitch 1/2.5" sensor. The 12.2MP CMOS sensor has been developed for mobile phone cameras, but is of a size commonly used in compact and super zoom cameras. The IMX060PQ sensor, which Sony brands 'Exmor' in common with its DSLR CMOS sensors, will also be available incorporated into an F2.8 28mm-equiv lens unit with piezoelectric driven autofocus - relatively advanced for a camera phone module.

Do you think 3.2MP cameras just suddenly appeared on the market one morning?
Duh. They were announced before being available to the public, just like this one.

Actually they have 5 MP cameras on some Nokia phones for a while now.

Mukiwa5638d ago

5MP camera phones have been around for almost 18 months and you can get 8.1MP phones now...
3.2MP is not quite the pinnacle anymore.

The noise generated by having such a high MP count on that small a sensor will be atrocious, this is nothing more than a marketing check point to win over the ignorant masses.

Senbo5638d ago (Edited 5638d ago )

is that CMOS sensors sens light from top to bottom (rolling shutter) wile CCD sensors sens light at the same time(global shutter).

this causes moving objects to come out like this http://web.tiscali.it/rudiv... this is fixed with high shutter speed that cell phones don't have.

in other words even though CMOS sensors have a better image, unless they get higher shutter speeds CMOS sensors should suck on cellphones.

High megapixel counts doesn't matter that much once you go over a certain number. It's about the quality of the lens and cellphone lenses are crap!
