Kotaku: “As one of the few proud PlayStation Vita holdouts (chants: Vita means life! It only rhymes with wife!) I spent a lot of my holiday travel time playing old PlayStation JRPGs I’ve amassed for $6 a pop. While it can’t compare to staying up late in front of a boxy old TV, it’s been wonderful to play classics I missed out on and weird high-profile experiments on that handheld’s tiny screen. Such as Legend of Mana, a game that, frankly, I only knew of as a punchline whenever people talked about its beloved cousin, Secret of Mana.”
Legend of Mana, the fourth entry of Square Enix’s Mana series and one of its most renowned JRPGs, is now available on mobile devices in a reworked version optimized for touch displays. Not only that, but gamers will be able to use gamepads and a cloud storage service to play the same game on many devices.
Nick from DSOGaming writes: "While the colorful worlds, endearing cast, and gorgeous soundtrack are big draws, the painfully clunky combat, maze-like environments, and obtuse quest designs make Legend of Mana an overall drag of an experience."
Twinfinite interviews Legend of Mana producer Masaru Oyamada about the remaster, also trying to catch a glimpse of the future of the series.
I never heard anything terrible about Legend of Mana when it was released. The only negative things I ever heard was that it wasn't quite as good as Secret of Mana.
This game is one of my favourite of all time. Unlike Secret of Mana with its confusing map, this one is dead simple. The art is really wonderful and the battle skills are fun to use and improve.
And I think the soundtrack is Shimomura's best work:
