GG: "Nostalgia Goggles": A Fallout Fan's Review of Fallout 3

Oliver Saenz writes:

"So, that's about it on my end. As the jaded Fallout veteran that went in with loads of hesitations, I've figured it all out. To my Fallout super-fan brethren, I can say but one thing: embrace change. Embrace the differences in Fallout 3 as compared to Fallout 1 and 2. Embrace them, learn from them, cope with them, and master them-and the wasteland is yours to conquer. And you'll have one of the best experiences in gaming while doing so."

Fallout 2 is my favorite game ever made. It had a certain something that no game to date has ever managed to replicate. Some valiant attempts were made (Torment, Arcanum, Bloodlines, KotoR), but never was that elusive beast captured again. When Black Isle was liquidated it just about broke this poor gamer's tiny heart, so when I heard that Fallout 3 was being made, my first thought was "REALLY!?" Then I found out that Bethesda was making it, and that they wanted to take the franchise in a "new direction". To which I might have replied, "What the f*** is wrong with you?!"

Almost instantly I was overcome with an unreasonable apprehension. They were going to take my childhood and s*** on it. I kept up with every stage of Fallout 3's development filled with a combination of hope and dread. So when the game finally came out I already knew mostly what I was in for, but I didn't know how I was going to feel about it.

Now, a good, evil, and neutral character later, I can safely say that Fallout 3 is a fantastic game. I think it's great, and might even go so far as to say that I love it, BUT... I'm disappointed. That might seem like a strange dichotomy to most, but the simple fact is that Fallout 3 is the best RPG I've played in almost a decade... Which just happens to be when Fallout 2 was made. The talented people at Bethesda have made a wonderful game, but tragically, they're just not AS talented as the people at Black Isle. It's missing that "something", and even if it's difficult to put into words, any fan of the first two will feel its absence.

Also, it won't let me shoot little kids... Don't look at me like that. Some of those kids are jerks!
