Epic Games' Gears of War 2 hits stores today. The Unreal 3 game engine upgrade is part of what makes the new game so great, but it will also contribute to better Army simulations with increased chaos, better AI and improved graphics.
i would obviously disagree and say that socom is the definition of a military simulator (ground warfare/tactile warfare etc.) lets not blow things out of proportion now ok : ).
I agree with you, but I'm open to new suggestions, so this is why I thought it would be interesting to post it here. And yes, I know, the PS3 rules. :)
Hahahaha this article is major fail. How the hell are you going to try to spin the fakeness of GeOW2 gameplay into realism? No, just no. Now Socom is a completely different story!
Read the damn article. It's about how the Unreal Engine 3 upgrades Gears of War 2 is bringing will help military simulators like America's Army be more immersive and realistic.
agreed games like socom/ghost recon etc are more of simulators
"It's about how the Unreal Engine 3 upgrades Gears of War 2 is bringing will help military simulators like America's Army be more immersive and realistic." no i didnt read the article but thanks for summing it up for me but i still disagree, wouldnt the engine crysis is on be more realistic and immersive? dont get me wrong the unreal3engine is good but i think their are much better engines out there to choose from than the [unreal3engine]. i call b*ll$h*t on this article. unreal3 is nothing special. especially for that particular purpose.
Why don't you go read the article why the updated Unreal engine is good for the mentioned purpose. Jeeezzz.... people constantly make mindless comments. Think before you speak.
i see what the article is saying now, my fault. its about the characteristics of the engine and what it does, i jumped to conclusions and assumed it was talking about game and gameplay sorry, + bubbles. and i normally do make sense in my comments and think b4 i speak, i guess i just got lazy on this one. ya know, their has been alot of annoying bullsh*tty comment going around lately so it does get aggravating and sometimes people do jump to conclusions, idk. props to the unreal3 engine.
should just mention "UE3" instead of "gears2"
America's Army beats all. That's a true military shooter.
badz149, Flame bait my friend. Flame bait.
The author of this article apparently has his head in the sand. First he doesn't realize that in addition to the what is seen on screen, a comprehensive editor, AAR system, and terrain generation (based on real world DTED data) is required. Second, the author doesn't realize that something has already appeared that raised the bar. It is now the official simulation of the USMC and will be announced this month as the official sim of the US Army. actually gears 2 is very tactical as in you have a squad of 5 guys and only have 1 life per round, cover based and you can get revived. i played the socom beta and that wasnt tactical at all, just run up and shoot people, die, respawn, repeat over and over. gears is alot slower pace cause you only have 1 life per round and is very heavy on teamwork and using a mic. i can see why youd all dissagree seeing as your ps3 fanboys and all, your going to say " NOTHINGS MORE TACTICAL THAN SOCOM!!!" but if you guys actually played gears youd understand.
I guess somebody didn't play SOCOM or they would know that respawns can be turned off and are off in almost every ranked room. 1 life per round. No chainsaws, but rather actual weapons.
Does people read the articles anymore?
Props to you for reading the article and admittance. I didn't want to sound too harsh, but frequently people just make comments without making at least an effort to find out what is going on. So we get all this noise that further misleads people. Vicious cycle. Happy gaming!
Way to blow yourself up as a ill informed/under researched post. You do know respawn is for noobs only on socom right? is that the only way you played LOL. there are 15 normal rooms to 1 respawwn. But i guess its normal to go around spreading 1/2 truths and mislead people based on simple stuff like telling the truth or may besome research. I cant believe your gonna compare it to socom and then get the biggest pint in your post completely wrong. GOOD JOB Gears 2 kicks ass. I don't play it for realism I play it for the exact opp. and FUN.
no one liked it. http://www.metacritic.com/g... stop insulting Gears 2 by mentioning that Socom trash in the same sentence. now go play in traffic....
Yes, Gears of War 2 raises the bar for realistic military shooters, it perfectly details the current fight against, whatever the hell enemies in Gears of War 2 are. I've lost two imaginary brothers in that war.
We did lose a lot of good men out there... I don't like to talk about it!
Keep it coming.
Gears of War 2 Raises the Bar for Military Simulators -lol there are so many other games that are above gears 2 in simulating war
This is really just getting silly now... and no, that's not a knock on Gears.
wow so how much did ms pay for this bs article to come out
I hope nothing. If they would have done such a thing, it would have wasted money. But I'm really thinking this is sarcasm (I'm not reading it, not wasting this time).
Since when does the military use meat shields and guns with chainsaws. If there's any game out there that really puts you in the shoes of the military, it's obviously the Socom franchise.
...and you should read the forum rules. Particularly those that pertain to the Gamer Zone.
wow i hope Microsoft isn't the one behind this, seriously everything in gears is for the most part fake, i repeat FAKE. im guessing this game will make our us arm forces take steroids and carry big heavier guns that would and could potentially make em slower out in the battlefield. Want a more realistic approach? how about call of duty or even a game like splinter cell are more close to realistic situations than gears is by a long shot, the ghost recons, rainbow six's, ace combats ect. those are the games you can say that will and could help improve out military and intelligence. gears? seriously yes gears is fun and has lovely details in the graphics department but don't say, that a game's A.1 particular A.I coming from a game that only features about 6 or 8 enemies in one entire map is going to surely raise the bar let alone help us out there in real life, lol oh man now i know were not that stupid.
Nothing I hate more then people who don't read the thing they're criticizing.
Yet Dom's AI still sucks. ..
OMGLMAOHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I hated that about the first game. He was simply stupid.
I still remember Clifford stating that you shouldn't have to babysit Team AI, yet I can't think of the times I died trying to save Dom's idiot ass.
I actually thought he was invincible for a bit because he took a rocket to the chest from a Boomer complete with the standard Locust fire and didn't so much as flinch. He then proceeded to run aimlessly back and forth through the razorhail that kills me in 4 seconds. ..again unscathed. It wasn't until an act later where he got taken down for the first time by a standard Locust. ..then again about 6 seconds after I revived him. Followed by standing still through 2 firefights until the gameplay's scripting forced him to do something to push the campaign along, at this point he teleported behind me from wherever the hell he was standing beforehand. I remember this vividly because I died wondering where the hell he was instead of shooting at the asshat taking aim at me with the sniper rifle.
Dude that was funny as hell, you had me rolling....Gears2 is great when you play co-op, but alone it gets repetitive. It's always more fun to see who can get the most headshots
I think this is more about Unreal Engine 3 as opposed to Gears of War 2. No one in their right mind would actually claim that Gears 2 simulates anything except male-on-male "bonding".
i sure hope you are right on that my friend, but speaking of engines and such i believe the cell was or should i say being used for cancer studies and even the actually military have bough a few ps3's for their researches. imagine if Iraq was like gears do you know how easy the u.s' arms forces would have it? 8 enemies in one whole area? thats breakfast. lol jk im sorry don't mean to rant but seriously gears is the last title they should use for any simulation, if anything this game was build to sell consoles and hype and behind those two components fun.
imagine if Iraq was like gears do you know how easy the u.s' arms forces would have it? 8 enemies in one whole area? thats breakfast. lol jk LOL
Dont know how chainsaws and shotguns play into our military very much but whatever.
I wonder what the 360 fanboys have to say about this
Read the whole article, rather than just the very misleading title, a lot of fanboy mud-slinging can be avoided that way.
Seems like their talking about how the engine can be used by the military... But I don't see why they just don't buy PS3s and Socom... Didn't the air force do that a while back?
Pebs, this is N4G. Nobody reads the article. Only the headline (if that). Then they storm off to the comment section to rip on X console.
Maybe they aren't buying ps3 + socom because... http://www.metacritic.com/g...
ooooooooooooooooooooooh shut the funk up
Gears of War 2 raised the bar for the Gears of War franchise but not the way other franchises did. It's not a revolution, and not even evolution. It's "Microevolution" for lack of a better term.
It is not that difficult to improve on trash my friend.
Believe it or not, Operation Flashpoint's engine is still being used by Military organizations, and still considered to be one of the best to simulate real world scenarios...
The title really does the article no favours, although the meta-tag title (as shown on the browser tab) is "Gears of War 2 - How Gears of War and Unreal Engine 3 Work for the Military - Popular Mechanics" which is more accurate to what the article actually says. The whole Gears of War 2 part is basically Mike Capps (guy from epic) explaining how the unreal engine works with examples from GeoW2, he's in no way saying that GeoW2 is a realistic military simulator. Basically, the article says how the Unreal 3 engine's AI, destructible environments and lightning etc can be used for a military simulator.
What kind of stupid question is that?
I would say the Ego engine raises the bar military simulators far higher than any UE3 upgrades could possibly hope to reach. For those of you who are wondering wtf the Ego engine is it's the engine Operation Flashpoint 2 is being built on.
Not sure if I agree with this article...
I'm sure militaries around the globe will soon adopt the 'human shield' technique in their training programs. In all seriousness though, I'm surprised no crazed fan has made a chainsaw gun on youtube or something...
I have a remedy for your surprised-ness. Curtsey of a failed N4G story; http://www.youtube.com/watc...
Oh you would be surprised to see how far those fanboys are ready to go my friend.
I dont own eithier sys, yet. I played RS2 tonight, I played part one thought it was a pretty good game. I played RS2 and I am pretty dissapointed its got some awe on the bosses, for sure! Other than that ,its to along a rail for me. I guess Im spoiled by the Far Crys and Oblivion like games now. Anyways, next is to try GOW 2.
don't let all the desperate sony fanboys constant posts on N4G fool you. They have nothing better to do than post on N4G because they have no good games to play. R2 is an above average fps at best and it has never been a AAA title except in the delusional minds of Sony fanboys who sleep with their PS3s at night. Go play Gears 2 and experience a real game.
If Gears 2 is a war simulator then Final Fantasy is an FPS. So no. Gears 2 = Hollywood perspective of war Socom = More accurate portrayal Not an attack on Gears, just this particular idea.
read the article.
What a joke! Gears is about the furthest away from a simulator you can get while still being a shooter. Hell even Halo3 is a better simulator and it's nothing close.
i think cod4 has raised the bar for military simulators
Gears 2, Soccom, and even America's Army will not deliever a true military experience ever. AA can be arguable, but when you get a chance to try out Armed Assault, Operation Flashpoint, or even Project Reality you will understand the true meaning of tactical gameplay, and the style of combat that is used in the army.
SOo in real life if i join the army i have too have a cover system and fight a locust once in awhile wow the army seems cool...whats next mirrors edge will teach u too be a runer wow i cant wait too jup around buildings :)...
Where do people get this kind of logic?
i'm guessing nobody actually read the article, it is more about how unreal engine can handle a realistic battle situation using the advancements in place in gears of war 2 he isn't saying gears of war 2 is realistic, or even remotely close to it
Blame the title then, cause the title obviously fails at bringing the content or intention of the article across. And on the actual article: I take a look at Operation Flashpoint (2) I take a look at any U3 game I compare these two regarding advances in military simulation capabilities ... And then i LAUGH in the face of the author who claims that U3 is an advancement for such simulators. Sorry, but the advancements all have been done already by other engines. U3 is not particularly good at military simulation. U3 is good at colorful, high contrast and shiny, all of which is useless in military simulations.
