A lot excitement around SSD.

Yet, i feel it has more to do with optimization and not just bigger and better HW to solve their issues.

Im almost certain the PS4 still has a lot of untapped potential if the devs would spend more time developing around the HW itself instead of treating it like a PC.

DJStotty1742d ago (Edited 1742d ago )

I know right, like SSD is some kind of brand new tech /s

The SSD was created in no less than 1988

UltraNova1742d ago

Yes but it still isn't a standard PC part. Next gen consoles will all feature SSDs making it the first time ever a platform has them as standard, this is why its so important now to devs and users alike.

xX-oldboy-Xx1742d ago

Does every gaming PC have an SSD? That's where the next gen games will benefit, the devs can actually code to it. Let's see how well it is utilised or if it makes no difference apart from load screens.

I'd rather be optimistic

AnubisG1742d ago

Many of the tech that was just released or about to be released has been around for decades but not available for the mass market do to various different factors. SSD's are still realatively expensive and concidered a relatively new part for PC's.

So what is your point?

Main PC problem and reason I like gaming on consoles is, nothing is ever a standard in the PC world.

Vetgamer1742d ago

Yes it's a ssd but with Sony magic.

JunMei1742d ago

@oldboy

umm... SSDs aren't a thing to be coded to. It's just read and write speeds. If you put an SSD into your PS4 right now, you will have immediately faster load times. No "special coding" required.

rainslacker1742d ago

SSD has been around a while, along with other Static RAM storage mediums. But, with PC, since it's not a standard across the board, there is no way to utilize it for every game, or design high speed random access routines at a core level of the game design.

A closed system like onsoles, that can be done, because everyone will have that set up.

Untapped potential? Do you think consoles are magic devices? It's literally a PC. They even use the same x86 architecture
The only difference is they are optimized to run games instead of doing a million different things like a PC.
And the hardware was already outdated when they launched. You should be thankful it can run new games as well as they do

AnubisG1742d ago

Oh, look at Mr. Grumpy. Did those bad consoles hurt you?🤣

harmny1742d ago (Edited 1742d ago )

@AnubisG
They didn't. I own a PS4 and i like it. But I don't lie to myself. Like thinking it has untapped potential 6 years after its release or thinking ps5 will run games at 8k 120fps with a 1tb SSD for $400

rainslacker1742d ago

A console and a PC may be similar hardware wise, but the way the software is made for them is fundamentally different. PC programs do not code to the hardware, at least on modern operating systems, outside some linux applications. On a PC, programs are written to a higher level API, and the operating system handles all I/O processes, and interpreting the software to run on whatever hardware exists.

While a console can have the system do this as well to some degree, the software is built to access the hardware directly.

This can be both good and bad. Good, because you can get significantly better performance if you code right to the hardware. Bad, because it can take more knowledge or time to get things to work.

jukins1742d ago

Lol who isnt developing around the hardware? That makes no sense...optimization or not having an ssd drastically reduces all things loading. So imagine if as you say devs optimize around the hardware which will all have standard a custom ssd solution load times could possibly cease to exist.

That's why there the excitement. No more long initial load times no more pop in. Straight to gaming.

Imo the ssd being standard is gonna be the best feature of next gen.

Next time you play a game try and calculate how much time is spent waiting for loading. In games like the division 2 loads are ridiculous. Minutes to load the character select minutes to load the game world, minties to fast travel lots of time spent loading.

Slappy McGee1742d ago

I give it two years tops before devs expand the size of their games or the size of the in game worlds and negate any benefit of the SSD. They all want you playing their game longer (being engaged in it) so they make everything bigger and bigger like Ubisoft did with AC Odyssey.

DJStotty1742d ago

Exactly, granted launch titles will have minimal load screens, but a few years down the line when the games are 4/5 times as large, guaranteed there will be a few loading screens.

Using non-existent load screens as some sort of selling point in my opinion de-values what the consoles can actually achieve.

You dont by a console because of how many loading screens it has

roadkillers1742d ago

Yes, but there development techniques that can hide the loading where the user does not experience it.

We have been promised no loaded since PS3 and probably before it. Although, I do not remember loading in God of War, was there?
