Generation Zero review - an atmospheric, but rather empty, open world - Eurogamer

From Eurogamer: "Something's gone horribly wrong here.

You can't put your finger on it, at least not at first. The world looks just as it should do (or at least how I imagine it should, having never experienced Sweden in the lurid fluorescent glow of the 1980s). Rows of homes stand empty, yes, and meals wait expectantly on kitchen tables as the TV blasts static from the cosy lounge, but the lights are still on, answerphones still flash with new messages, and while there's nobody home, at least not for now, whoever put that book down thought they would be right back."

Insane price hikes I guess they have to make their money back from the hardware price cuts from somewhere.

DaCajun237d ago

Guess I'll have to move to PC only gaming. This is getting ridiculous.

S2Killinit237d ago

I wonder why MS raised their gamepass prices too. They didnt even give us a console price drop.

crazyCoconuts238d ago

Big increases. Interesting they're only changing the annual not monthly.
Still a lot cheaper than GamePass but the difference isn't as stark anymore...

ModsDoBetter238d ago

Game Pass annual - $60
Base version of PS Plus - $80

"Still a lot cheaper than GamePass"?

Crows90238d ago

@olmyserio

You should double check your numbers on the Xbox side.

Christopher238d ago

@olMyetslo: that's Game Pass Core, not Game Pass.

ModsDoBetter237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

@Christopher

No, its base gamepass when compared to PS Plus Essential.

If we're talking about GamePass ultimate, then the fair comparison would be the top tier of PS Plus, which is now more expensive than Ultimate.

S2Killinit237d ago

@olMyerslo
Yes Plus is still way cheaper than Gamepass.
Check the current pricing.

Ashunderfire86237d ago

I was shocked so your saying that they didn’t change the monthly? That what plan I picked for PA Plus Premium.

This is the result of no real competition. Sony can increase their prices all they want because they know their gamers will pay those new prices.

BTW, Sony fanboys were making fun of Microsoft's increased prices... I wonder how they feel now.

crazyCoconuts238d ago

Well the competition (MS) is already way pricier, if that's what you mean by no competition. Sony obviously has competition so I don't know what you mean

bangoskank238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

We have no choice. Can't play games like Diablo IV without PS Plus. If it weren't for that and having to access saves in cloud storage I wouldn't even bother.

TOTSUKO238d ago

Gamepass in general is bad. In a future where subscription based service only exist the annual will need to be $300+ a year to keep triple A games relevant. It’s killing Triple A. Devs aren’t gonna make great games to sell gamers to pay premium when services are paying their dev cost just to make a quick profit. Disgusting.

Hofstaderman237d ago

We cool, we actually buy games and are not dependent on these services.

CrimsonWing69237d ago

I’m pretty sure Microsoft is their competition 🙄

"Sony said for current 12-month subscribers, this price increase will not take effect until your next renewal date that occurs on or after November 6. However, any membership changes you make on or after September 6, such as upgrades, downgrades or buying additional time, will update your plan reflecting the new prices."

Anyone who already has a 12mo plan that is not set to expire until after these dates can extend their time before the deadline for just $99. Mine expires next year in January but I can add another year to it if I buy by 9/5.

seanpitt23238d ago

Rip off especially in a cost of living crisis how do Sony justify this.. giving us saints row one of the worse rated games haha

KyRo238d ago

As a bit of Playstation fan since the PS1, Sony has been making questionable decisions for a while now. The PS4 the hit it put the park and smashed the last generation but as time goes on, it's starting to feel like the arrogant, "we're untouchable" Sony is coming back.

I'll always favor Sony even if I own both consoles but I hope Xbox finally pulls its socks up and brings some competition again.

Wintersun616237d ago

@KyRo "The PS4 the hit it put the park"
I'm sorry but I got an aneurysm trying to understand you.

ModsDoBetter238d ago

Disgusting.

Seems like only yesterday that they just increased it and yet here we are again.

seanpitt23238d ago

Yeah that's why I want Microsoft to do well even though I am a Sony guy.. it pains me to see Microsoft keep failing with there bad management and lack of innovation.. Sony are getting too confident and with absolute no competition they are starting to take the piss and its all about the money and not the games.. only GAAS bullshit

shadowT238d ago

Sony serious? The prices are ridiculous.

ChasterMies238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

Oof. Unfortunately the benchmark is set by Microsoft and Game Pass Ultimate still costs a lot more than PS+ Premium. $80/year is asking a lot to be able to play on-line. All on-line gaming should be free on both consoles. My current plan runs out in 2025 [Edit, 2026] so that’s when I’ll get hit.

Christopher238d ago

That's a pretty large price increase there. Kind of hoping this tells people how expensive subscription gaming will be if it continues to centralize in such a manner. More Game More Costs.

RauLeCreuset237d ago

It should also make people consider what can happen if subs weaken or eliminate other options. These increases would be less of an issue, and possibly something Sony wouldn't have attempted, if there was still the ability to play online without a subscription. They are leveraging the elimination of that option to implement these price increases.

crazyCoconuts237d ago

Agreed, it feels like a market correction of sorts.
But I really think they would have been better off dropping the quality of the essential games and leaving the price the same. That's gonna tick some people off

isarai238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

Well I'm not renewing anytime soon, holy crap! sucks that it literally JUST ran out yesterday. Actually been wanting to try all of these

TriniOutsider237d ago

Yo, that's 108 dollars Canadian for a year!

Sonic1881237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

Sony is going back to the PS3 days and Jim Ryan have a lot to do with that 😂

blackblades237d ago

Who the hell buy subs at full price, been getting discounts since day one except that auto charge time.

jznrpg237d ago

I sure as hell don’t.

maniacmayhem237d ago

The problem with this is Sony isn't adding any value to justify these price increases. From what I'm seeing no improvements are being made.

We could at least justify these increases if Sony would possibly add day and date for their first party games to a higher tier. But all I'm seeing are games that have been on Game Pass already and then Saints Row which I heard wasn't even that awful but definitely wasn't as good as the past games.

jznrpg237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

Less than 7$/mofor essential up to 12-13$/mo for premium at full price isn’t too bad imo. But you can find sales every year. I’m subbed to premium until 2028 and I’ll look for sales before it’s up. I have never paid retail besides maybe the first however many months when it came out during the PS3 days. If I don’t find any sales I may just let it run out until I want to play MP which isn’t often. I don’t need plus I just get it because I can. I mainly play single player games and want to own them so I’m good either way. I do like cloud saves though.

CobraKai237d ago

Ive been scoring black friday deals for PS Plus. Now i’ll need it more than ever.

Daeloki237d ago

At least there's a bit of a delay for current subscribers:

"For current 12-month subscribers, this price increase will not take effect until your next renewal date that occurs on or after November 6. However, any membership changes you make on or after September 6, such as upgrades, downgrades or buying additional time, will update your plan reflecting the new prices. You can change or cancel your subscription at any time, details"

ABizzel1237d ago

It’s just weird timing and kind of out of no where, especially considering Extra and Premium literally use launched what just a year ago and already upping in price.

I could see if it was essentials only, and it jumped to $69.99 with the promise of higher quality new release games and the addition of 1 PSVR game, but $20 is just a weird increase, and with no information on the addition on the higher tiers it just leaves a sour taste.

I generally stack all my subscriptions anyway so I’m still 2+ years out, so I’ll buy up some enough PS+ to not have to worry about for years to come, but crummy.

This is the first time in a while it’s just been a hard negative for me with them. I get it, they’re in a content spending war with MS and others, and they don’t have the instant revenue, but if you make a drastic change you need to make a reason for it, and if anything have the value addition there DAY 1, like VR games, PS3 games remastered natively for PS5, etc…

crazyCoconuts238d ago

So Xbox drops Gold after giving you stinkers for games for the last few years. PS keeps the quality but raises the price in response. I'd like to see a cheap option that includes just online features and no games for people that don't want to pay more.

monkey602238d ago

€72 for a years essential! Absolute dirtbag move here! These aren't minor price hikes they are massive differences.

LucasRuinedChildhood238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

Yeah, this pricing is awful.
- Extra is getting €26 price hike (€99.99 -> €125.99)
- Premium is getting a €32 price hike - €152 for Premium is a joke. They've been putting classic games on the store at a snail's pace too. Jesus.

To other PS fans here, please don't defend this, guys. This needs a huge backlash.

AdonisIsBeast238d ago

I’d actually support it if they actually spent money from the billions that they earn per quarter from their loyal fans and acquired a major publisher like Microsoft did where they would receive beloved legacy IP that their current studios will never match.

A square enix or capcom would soften this move a lot. They could implement Final Fantasy into PS Stars and other media.

crazyCoconuts237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

@adonis I don't get how PS buying Capcom would help you as a consumer. That Sony would start making Street Fighter movies? No thanks

DefenderOfDoom2237d ago

Yeah, I feel like they have should of gone up ten bucks instead of 20 bucks for PPE in US .

Battlestar23238d ago

Awesome hope this leads to more gamers jumping ship and joining the Xbox family and jumping into gamepass. Sony has become too full of themselves again and need to be giving a nice knock off their high horse.

VersusDMC238d ago

Xbox had a 2 dollar monthly increase recently which is a bigger increase over the Sony Hike. So not really a market leader move.

crazyCoconuts237d ago

So price increases so consumers move from a $135/yr PS extra plan to a $204/yr plan GP Ultimate plan? That doesn't make sense.
What I hope is that customers realize this subscription model ultimately sucks and they're better off making choices on which games they should buy. You don't need Sony or Microsoft making those decisions.

jeromeface237d ago

when it comes out how much of a joke starfield is I can't wait to see the justification.

Zeref237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

Lol you already made up your mind about Starfield without playing it. You're not a gamer. You're pathetic.

Zeref237d ago

88 on Metacritic btw, idk if you saw.

Stanjara238d ago

Just looking at this months essential games, I don't see the value. I am, and going to stay single player enjoyer on the PS. Prices are ridiculous.

Outside_ofthe_Box238d ago (Edited 238d ago )

Same. $20 hike for multiplayer is insane. Definitely letting my sub lapse. And sticking to single player only. I will not be trying to 'stack' as much years of essential as I can. I shouldn't have to unexpectedly splurge money all at once to avoid having to pay an unnecessary huge price hike for a couple of years. Barely play multiplayer at all anymore. The free games and hope that a multiplayer game that would eventually get my interest would come were the only reasons why I kept renewing, but this $20 increase doesn't justify it, not that the current price did anyway. Multiplayer should not be behind pay wall in the first place. This is why I hate subscription services to begin with. It's already gotten out of hand with tv services. Gaming is getting there now.

Crows90238d ago

Agreed. I'm not resubscribing. I'll keep my multiplayer gaming on PC

crazyCoconuts237d ago (Edited 237d ago )

Yes, perfect. I hope more follow suit.
Charge us some small amount for online ($30/yr?) and let us buy our games again
