Mostly all those who are serious gamers will stick with their dedicated consoles/handhelds/PC rigs, and the casuals will be too much of outsiders to be pulled away from casual pick-up-and-play options like Candy Crush and the like. Those in the middle already have at least one console with at least a few solid/qualify titles who probably don't game enough to justify spending time and money on something that they already have but don't use much.

They boast about billions of people this is aimed at but it sure as s*** won't be played by even .1% of those billions, I bet even less. Google innovates but also gets way in over their head and cancels products/underperforms all the time (Google+ was dead before it even began, the decline of YouTube, Google Fiber has all but stopped expanding to anything more than 16 notable cities, etc.) That's just scratching the surface: https://www.lewis-lin.com/b...

Alright, lets summarize both positives and negatives.

Lets start with positives:
1) Instant access across any device you own.
2) No need to upgrade hardware
3) YouTube integration
4) They are making exclusives
And... thats all positives I could find. Now, lets see the negatives..

1) Limited games library
2) No ownership - Google can remove any game from the platform whenever they want
3) Built-in microphone - Google are notorious for breaking privacy laws.
4) Ability to directly support game companies you like is lost.
5) Reliant on you having access to high-speed internet.
6) Data caps by internet providers will limit usability.
7) No game downloads - Again, you dont own anything.
8) Used games market will die out if streaming becomes the only option
9) Even with exclusives, they will most likely not compete with Playstation, Nintendo or Xbox offerings.
10) Input lag will always be present.
11) Video compression will always be present. Minimal og not.

Its weird, because xCloud and Playstation Now didn't concern me, but stadia scares the living shit out of me. And the reason for that is their message; that the future is streaming. No box, no hardware. I don't like that.

When you look at the PC platform today, you see Epic Games who just launched their competitor to Steam buying up third party exclusives like it was daily routine. What do you think Google will do with their capital? Probably the same.

And what happens to game preservation? Are we supposed to never play our old games? No longer find hidden gems? What about the mod-scene? There's just too many negatives.

Yep. I don't believe the option for local hardware will ever go away, but I can't say the possibility doesn't scare me. The problem is that the average consumer will be oblivious to all this. We who closely follow gaming and the industry are (or should be) wary and suspicious, and rightfully so, of a new entrant like Google who is promising to deliver the moon while making no issue with the fact that they want the gaming methods we have had for so long to go away.

I wonder if Sony forced Google's hand when they increased Twitch's relevance ten fold overnight when they released the PS4. Twitch was gaining traction, but with Steam and then PS4 making it a primary way to stream games, it really took a lot away from YouTube's gaming channels. Not that YT is a slouch, but Google tends to really be protective of some of it's properties....especially the one's they brought not too long before, and had a lot of people annoyed with the changes they made to it.

Let's see, um . . . all of it? Streaming has been tried before, and it didn't make a dent in the market. Google's huge presence should make quite a mark; but it isn't going to magically destroy the real gaming market. I can see casuals and mobile players taking to it. More serious console and PC gamers won't, even if they give it a try out of curiosity.
