The responses to Pitchford's tweet says it all. Epic exclusivity is going to hurt a PC game's sales.

Nitrowolf211d ago

Pitchford known to do things like this. He will defend it to the end cause in his mind it’s the right move.

Like Alien Colonial

He is also infamous to put financial interest over creative motivation. If Epic so much as offered a dime to have Borderlands 3 on the Epic Store exclusively, then he will do it.

@AnthonyDavis: That may be true, but choice is not.

shadowraiden9d ago

@anthonydavis yet i wouldnt say all the commonplace things steam has is overrated. user reviews, heck email verification isnt a thing for epic accounts(makes hacking accounts 100000x easier for hackers having no form of email verficiation), no cloud storage, game new's feed which are nice to see when patch's are being released, troubleshooting posts for games, friend's list on epic store cannot be used to join friends it is a worse discord messenger as heck even discord has ability to join steam games, built in mod hosting. just some of the basic features steam has now that to me epic should be focusing on so people actually want to use their service instead of forcing people to use a shitty service in order to play a new game.

“What’s wrong with that? A PC is a PC - who cares which store you get your games from? I’m just curious to learn the mind-set. I am a customer on lots of different PC platforms.“

Maybe because people don’t want to have to use 10 different services to play games and have friends in all sorts of different places. Just a thought.

porkChop10d ago

The PC is an open platform. Multiple storefronts was inevitable. That's the beauty of an open platform, there's competition leading to better prices for everyone.

Elwenil10d ago

@porkChop,

The Epic store isn't competition for gamers until their store can actually meet Steam eye-to-eye. Right now all they are is a shell, just a storefront, not much more than what any person can rent through Amazon Web Services. The only way they are competing with Steam is for the publisher's business, not the gamers. I could give a rat's ass less about what the publishers think of a particular store, I want to know what the store offers me as a consumer. Right now, Steam blows Epic away on more fronts than I can conveniently count. Wake me up when Epic gets their shit together and becomes something more than a cheap way to play on publisher's greed.

crazyCoconuts10d ago

The market will decide. If people don't care, they'll buy regardless of the store(maybe better described as a platform) or if they're like me, they won't buy the game. If there are enough people like me, publishers will stop doing this...

Neonridr10d ago

I agree, but sadly is the world we live in. Ubisoft for Division, Blizzard for Destiny, Overwatch, WOW, Origin for EA stuff.

Plenty of people have played Fortnite, so their exposure to having an epic account and loader should already be familiar to them.

Neonridr10d ago

@Elwenil - sadly Steam has had what.. a 15 year head start? No new store is going to match Steam feature to feature at launch. Remember when Steam launched and what it offered?

rainslacker10d ago

I dont liken it to console exclusives, because people aren't prevented from playing it in their hardware, just forced to use a specific storefront. guess it's about as annoying as when a retail store gets exclusive rights to sell a physical game. While more often than not the customer can just buy it from that store, it may not be their preferred store. However, it's a bit less annoying because it means you have to click a different icon, instead of driving to a different store, or whatever. I guess the ecosystem is valid if the features aren't on par

badz14910d ago

@Neonridr

who the hell cares about headstart? it's not like Epic is not watching for those 15 years. It's unacceptable how barebone the Epic Store is compared to Steam at launch with all those times at the sideline watching Steam running things. after 15 years of observation, THAT's the best the can launch with?

the best they have to offer is a bigger cut for publishers, and pretty much nothing else what gamers like from Steam. WTF?

Neonridr10d ago

@badz149 - oh don't get me wrong, there is plenty to like from Steam that should have been there, I am merely stating that we can't exactly expect parity here. Here's hoping Epic adds some of the core features, and fast, if they hope to be a viable platform moving forward.

haydenlake10d ago

PC users are just going to have to live with it. It's but one price to pay for the boundless platform.

Elwenil10d ago

@Neonridr,

Valid point, but I don't know if it's that good of an excuse. It would be like Google's new console coming out and looking like a GameBoy just because they are new to the business and everyone else had a head start. Epic knew who their main competitor was going to be and what they offered before they threw their hat in the ring. Now maybe they didn't want to invest that much in it at first and wanted to see the numbers before expending, but that's the price you pay for being cautious. But at the end of the day, Epic still has very little to offer consumers when compared to Steam. And let's face it, Epic has to do something to attract gamers because probably 90% would stick with Steam like we always do. But doing exclusive deals is shady, especially the way Metro Exodus as done, and does little to attract fans and build a customer base. Instead it seeks to divide gamers by forcing us into a choice we may not have wanted to make.

No Way10d ago

It happens with consoles all the time - but certain "gamers" don't want cross-play. Yanno, that would bridge that gap.

What's the difference?

jukins10d ago

After the initial store purchase cant you just have a short cut to the game? I dont understand the complaint about "having to use 10 different services" I mean really theres not even that many. Not to mention the majority of games are still on steam

shadowraiden9d ago

or you know people expect the store to have some basic features that epic refuse to do anything with. discord has better features then epic store right now and its a fucking messenger client.

so what if it was exclusive to Steam? Would you have said the same thing? Just curious if we are against exclusivity, or just the Epic store here.

crazyCoconuts10d ago

Personally I don't have a problem with exclusive on steam because I use steam. I don't have a problem with Epic, I just want to play my games through Steam...

Neonridr10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

personally, I prefer Steam as well. It would just make for some interesting popcorn debate if people were ok with it being on Steam only but not somewhere else.

Money talks here I guess, so I don't necessarily blame Pitchford.

I hate all these various launchers, they bloat my PC with stuff. But on an open platform like PC, it isn't exactly a surprise.

zombiewombie10d ago

Yes, I would. Unless the xompany itself is making it, I dont think there should be exclusives in any pc store front. They claim that thats the only way to compete with steam but they do nothing else ro beat Steam's pricing or even add feautures that have been on steam for years.

Vegamyster10d ago

Being a exclusive isnt the problem for me, it's throwing money at devs for that exclusivity on a inferior platform, I don't want Valve or anyone else doing this.

shadowraiden9d ago

there's a very quick fix for this issue:
Epic takes 12%
Steam takes 30%

I would just increase the steam sale price to make it on par with the revenue they get with the Epic games store. This way if gamers wants to complain, they can push valve to change their policies.

OR

Lower the price on the Epic store compared to steam to push gamers that wants to save money to buy on the Epic store instead.

This way if someone ever ask the dev why the price is different, there's a very easy explanation.

zombiewombie10d ago

I dont understand why they dont lower their prices on epic. Lower prices would make people buy it on their store front. Most people buy steam keys through 3rd party sites because their cheaper anyway.

crazyCoconuts10d ago

I like that approach. But Epic is obviously doing something special for these publishers (beyond just a lower cut) to be exclusive. Maybe a lower cut, maybe no cut at all...

Kryptix10d ago

They're damaging their momentum if they do put it on Epic Store first.

When MCC was announced on Steam, the hype was real, especially on Reddit. They do this and it will be another Exodus.

That's a lost sale on my part. Steam's features are too good, especially for a multiplayer game. I'll just stick to MCC for MP needs whenever this comes around if it's not on Steam.

Oh boy, that's not the type of response that alleviates concerns, heck, it almost confirms them.

Patient (The Gamer) "Doc, is it true that the medical equipment here is second rate? Even dangerous?"

Doc (CEO) "What's so bad about second rate medical equipment? Sure it might put you at risk for viruses, resulting in uncomfortable periods of time where you wonder where all your money is going but hey, equipment is equipment right? The best part is you can't rate your experience with us. Ok! Time to operate."

opc10d ago

Epic sounds an awful lot like the american health care system

AK9110d ago

Um isn't Pitchford supposed to be in jail?

TK-6610d ago

The underage porn thing is still just an accusation. I believe its going to court though so its better to wait and see before saying he should be in jail or not.

Rachel_Alucard10d ago

He had a video of a 19 year old camgirl doing magic tricks with her "you know what". He told this story before the allegations even came up on a podcast.

bananacrust10d ago

pretty sure 19 yrs old makes you a year older than the legal adult age so wtf are you getting at here?

Rachel_Alucard10d ago

@bananacrust

People are saying he should be in jail because some guy who scammed him and his company and tried to counter sue by hurting his reputation claimed he had a video of an underage girl on his USB.

Blu3_Berry10d ago

Jesus, that is one of the worst ways to respond to the consumers. I really hope that Borderlands 3 will not be exclusive to the Epic Games Store because if it is, I simply will not buy it on that crap anti-consumer featureless store. I will wait for a Steam version (if it ever gets one). Hell, I would buy it on GOG over Epic Game Store.

This whole exclusivity crap on PC is utter bullshit because it's an open platform. If they want to have a healthy competition, then they need to improve on the features, not pay a boatload of cash to keep games on their store. That is pure laziness and greed. There is absolutely no benefit for us to use their store.

Nitrowolf210d ago

Of course there’s no benefits for the end-user can use their store it all boils down to the publisher benefiting

Only way this gets fixed is if either publishers suck it up and Release it Everywhere with a loss per copy but A gain in sales

Or Do you like what digital movies do with their movies anywhere program but with games

shadowraiden9d ago

the thing that i dont get is like for example Metro people worked it out. the dev's/publisher was getting more on steam then they was on epic so it was clear end of day epic paid them and that lies the issue.
