Why Sony Skipping E3 2019 May Not Be That Big A Deal: As It Worked Out For Red Dead Redemption 2

Skewed and Reviewed have posted a new Opinion Piece which says that Sony's recent decision to skip E3 2019 may not be that big a deal in the long run. They point out that despite the convention still having a large influence; Red Dead Redemption 2 opted to skip the show and others and still had a very successful launch which may be Sony's approach for their unreleased and unannounced games.

1. You're comparing a game to a console maker/publisher.
2. Rockstar/Rockstar Games are hardly ever shown at E3 anyway.
3. It doesn't really matter if they are there or not anyway, i mean it is just a conference, although it is a place where you should announce and showcase new things.
4. Sony probably doesn't have anything to show next year, as they are probably preparing for the PS5, and when they announce this at their own conference or the next E3, they can showcase the PS5 and games.

Garethvk20d ago

Rockstar is there they just do private meetings. I used them as they were the publisher with perhaps the biggest pending game and they basically said we will sell without the show so that is why we are not here. This may be a growing trend of highly awaited titles saying we do not need trade shows. E3 still has a very large impact on social media and online coverage as the amount of traffic it generates is huge. The issue now is some companies are willing to take their chances and do their own thing versus fighting for attention with so many others at the same time.

"Sony probably doesn't have anything to show next year, as they are probably preparing for the PS5, and when they announce this at their own conference or the next E3, they can showcase the PS5 and games."

Exactly, Sony skipping E3 2019 has nothing to do with "saving money".

"I haven't seen you complain that Microsoft is showing games like Halo Infinite which is next gen or Microsoft basically abandoning this generation in order to prepare for next gen. But I guess like so many things who does it is more important than what they do."

If you´re trying to turn and twist what i said into some fanboy BS, bring proof that Halo Infinite is NOT a Xbox One game and Microsoft is abandoning this generation or GTFO!

"Like how Sony having exclusives is bad but Microsoft buying up whole multiplatform studios to make their games exclusive is perfectly acceptable."

Yeah, like Sony did with Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Bend, Guerrilla, Media Molecule and many others?
You don´t even know what SIE Studios is made of.

@Christopher

Nice, what did you reply on the wrong account?

I guess It was pretty obvious given how biased the your moderation is. PlayStation fans get banned left and right xbox fans say whatever they want and nothing ever happens.

Christopher19d ago

People saying #4 seems insane. There are plenty of new third-party titles and they can reshow all of the games they have already shown. It's not like this isn't what happens sometimes.

Saying they have nothing to show is not the same as not wanting to show anything new or not having any new game to show because it's obviously being held until the PS4 announcement. Which, I don't like on that last part just because it's kind of abandoning the generation and front-loading the next to make it look nicer. Good for business, kind of scummy for current customers.

@gamingunited

I've complained about it already when Microsoft did it with the 360 and my recent comment about their new studios was "Microsoft can announce things in the coming year, but it won't be ready for a minimum of two, likely almost three. Everything they've shown other than GoW seems very far off and not even in production in some cases."

If you don't see something, try looking for it. Don't just assume.

Rude-ro19d ago

There is nothing to gain at e3.
The gaming media is the gaming media.
There is no bump in coverage or magical media outlets that pop up in larger numbers per e3.
Why spend the money to do them to only get attacked per the media of which e3 is when Sony just so happens to get attacked every year in higher numbers.
Back in the day, it made sense because the media would actually give attention to it due to the lack of gaming media sites.. but today.. Sony can announce the ps5 right this second and would get the exact same coverage, if not more, than announcing at e3.
Times have changed. Why jump and pay to go through the fanboy hoops because that is exactly what the weeks of e3 is now.
Avoid it, and make your own stand out when you want.

Forn19d ago

Thing is too, Sony can be far more secretive by doing their own private showing at see point in the next year or so. No leaks, etc. Trust me when I say they have something to show as well. People saying they don't are just not thinking about it that hard.

Obscure_Observer19d ago

@Rude-ro

It´s gonna be funny to see people like you who defends Sony´s stance on skipping E3 2019, to turn and make a complete 180º when Sony will be back at E3 2020.

Rude-ro19d ago

@obscure
Like you and this entire gen? 180s all day?

There is no defending.. I am pointing out the facts.
There is absolutely nothing to gain from e3 anymore but negative press via the competitions tactics.
The influx happens twice a year of negative tones and press for Sony. E3 and the holidays.
Heck, even gamespots holiday articles have the DualShock 4 with the anti circle on its image?!
Why pay to free into it?
Like I said, there is nothing to gain anymore and Sony is not going quiet, they are not doing e3.
Sony got lambasted last e3 for showing off new ips actually running while Microsoft got praised for showing off nothing new as well but had a more expensive stage presence.
I thought e3 was about games and gaming related aspects?
I’m just saying, why feed into it just to get trolled by Microsoft’s media partners at this point?

Obscure_Observer19d ago

@Rude-ro

Dude, Nobody is saved from been criticized after a poor E3 presentation. Just imagine if it was Microsoft skipping E3 2019 instead of Sony? I´m sure that you would say that Xbox is dead! So stop acting like Sony is a victim here! They´re not!

Yes, i agree with you that maybe Sony just don´t want to throw a lot of money at E3 just to get flack by the media and internet because they have nothing "new" to show for the PS4.

This is is, nothing more to be said.

rainslacker19d ago

So, all the years in the past 20 odd years where they may not have anything new to show, and they just now decide to stop showing up? that makes no sense.

If the conference is to place to show what you have to a huge audience that will tune in, does all that stuff they do have coming not have a reason to be there as well? Or do you think Sony is concerned about all the whiny people who say they show nothing new, and criticize them for it? Sony not showing up because they just have nothing new to show is probably the last reason to not show up if marketing is their goal.

This article really comparing a game to an entire platform?

Garethvk20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

The last time I checked Sony had games as well as consoles. The majority of their E3 appearances have been about games not hardware so it does fit.

porkChop20d ago

You can't really compare anything in this industry to Rockstar. They're like the unicorn of gaming. They don't need advertising, which is why they barely advertise their games until just before launch. They don't need big conventions and fancy shows. They don't need 2 years of previews to build up hype. Everyone is going to buy their games anyway, and they know that. We all know that.

On top of that, Rockstar never has a visible or public presence at E3. Sony on the other hand has never missed an E3. These are two entirely different situations.

Apocalypse Shadow20d ago

All Sony has to do is drop a 20 minute trailer of upcoming releases for PS4 right before E3 and it would be a wrap. These games alone would squash any doubt that Sony has their base covered in the West, in the East and all across the world.

Ghost of Tsushima https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Project Awakening https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Project Judge https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Lost Soul Aside https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Gran blue Fantasy https://www.youtube.com/wat...
Death Stranding https://www.youtube.com/wat...

And a 10 minute trailer video of upcoming PSVR games that will be coming out after E3 as most games like Ace Combat, Sairento, Borderlands, etc would have already released. And, it would shut up anyone not familiar that Playstation always delivers GAMES. Not PROMISES. Even if they decide to sit it out on the couch drinking tea in front of a fireplace reading a book.The content is still coming.

xRacer74x19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

True, fans are easily duped. FF7 remake where are you, Crackdown 3 missing in action.

Ninver20d ago

It's not a big deal. Majority of ps4 owners have more than enough current/future games to keep them occupied for a while.

Sony is obviously saving surprises for a ps5 reveal in 2020.

Obscure_Observer20d ago

@Ninver

"It's not a big deal. Majority of ps4 owners have more than enough current/future games to keep them occupied for a while."

Really? Because the next first party game to be released on PS4 is "close" as April 2019. Death Stranding, Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU 2 doesn´t have a release date yet, and these games could be PS5 launch titles. Not saying that those titles wouldn´t be released on PS4, but pherhaps Sony wouldn´t have all new first party heavy hitters to show off PS5´s power, leaving them no choice but to rely on these upcoming PS4 games.

Apocalypse Shadow20d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Still doesn't mean those games aren't coming.

It's not like everyone is going to drop their PS4 systems and not play them anymore because they didn't show up at E3.

Gamers are being dramatic. Also, it makes no sense to release TLofU2 on PS5 for 2-5 million launch consoles compared to 100+ million potential PS4 customers.

jagermaster61919d ago

Finally someone gets it! As far as we know days gone is the only game coming out next year, not saying the others won't but it's a good possibility.

Razzer19d ago

“As far as we know” Sony is releasing Deat Stranding, Days Gone, Ghosts, and TLOU 2 next year for PS4 and will have a whole slew of unannounced games for PS5’s launch. So there is the other end of “as far as we know”. The reality will probably be somewhere in between.

Remember, Sony has had studios making games for quite a while. They didn’t have to go out and find some to buy.

dartha2419d ago

Wow xbox fans complaining about a lack of games on PS4 lol... Stay in your own lane their buddy just stick to defending Microsoft's abandoning this gen after year 3, and waiting for Crackdowngrade 3.

PS4 has tons of games like Dreams, Concrete Genie, Nioh II, God Eater III, Liar Princess and the Blind Prince, Steins Gate Elite, Death End re:Quest, Left Alive, PS4 had and continues to have more games than xbox by far.

Stick to worrying about games on xbox before you worry about exclusives on PS4.
