Oculus Quest standalone VR headset is as powerful as last-gen consoles PS3 and Xbox 360

DSOGaming writes: "Oculus has announced a new standalone VR headset called Oculus Quest. Oculus Quest is an all-in-one VR gaming system, meaning that – and contrary to Oculus Rift – you won’t need a PC system in order to play its VR titles. And according to John Carmack, this system is as powerful as the last-gen consoles, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360."

Should I be interested after knowing that ?, I mean those consoles are a decade old definitely not cool at all,

From Carmack:
"its games will not look as good as the games that came out on these consoles" , "you should not expect a game looking as good as Metal Gear Solid 4 or Gears of War 3"

what is this ?, Nintendo ? :D

More like sony, with its ps2 level graphics in Vr

crazyCoconuts52d ago

Sorry, but that's wrong in both comparisons.

Dom_Estos52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

PS2 levels?

Let me know what drugs you're on, and were on, back in 2001 and now.

The graphics can help with immersion, but nothing pulls you out of the experience as fast as being tethered to a cord on your PC. My Rift is hugely fun... But the Quest and being able to walk around your entire house/yard/whatever, will be so amazing. Plus, the techniques the Devs are using to increase graphics are pretty amazing, if you haven't played Lone Echo or other comparable games, you haven't seen how amazing these games can look.

How powerful is your PSVR when you unplug it from your PS4?

Having a ps3/360 built into a headset is an interesting step and if anything I'd be more interested in what gets made for this than the Rift/Vive since you're able to move around more.

This isnt for the hardcore gamer. What's so hard to understand about that? This is an attempt to get higher end vr to the more casual buyer. All they need is this package to enjoy some decent vr games. I mean they demoed super hot on it and the seeing someone move around as much in vr without the hassle of wires and such was impressive.

traumadisaster52d ago

At first thought that sounds right that it's not for us, but the casual, so how much...75$? Nope! It's $400, the same price as what a new gfx card or console costs.

Take a look at how much people pay for phones and tablets and you see that this is definitely not an outlandish price.

In some ways it is. But we all know that it's not fully. You won't see TLofU level in there.

But does it matter after immersion sets in? No. This is an awesome step forward for VR. Wireless and 6dof. If Robo Recall, Super Hot, Moss, etc, end up looking and playing great, it won't matter that's it's not crazy powerful.

It will be crazy fun. And that's what matters. And the price is killer.

nirwanda52d ago

You can almost buy a PS4 with a vr headset for the same price , then have access to more vr games than this plus the whole PS4 catalogue.

KingTrash52d ago

Yeah but the resolution of the display is way better than the PSVR and the tracking on the PSVR sucks. I owned one and sold it. I’m very interested in the Quest. No wires and 6 degrees of tracking with those controllers is gonna be great. Apocalypse Shadow is right. Once immersion sets in, the graphics don’t matter as much with VR. I mean, it’ll obviously be better with better graphics down the road but this is a huge step forward for VR.

Anyone buying this will already have a PS4, Xbox One, Switch or PC capable of playing games. This isnt made for people who are looking to get into gaming so its a pointless comparison.

Playing Super Hot now on PSVR. Amazing, amazing experience and game. Unlike anything I've ever played. Having that and Moss and not being tethered with perfect tracking on this thing is a huge deal. I can see this headset being a big success, especially when the price comes down. It makes me even more excited for what Sony will do for their next headset now that we know what is possible with the hardware.

ProjectVulcan52d ago (Edited 52d ago )

Not that hard. Xbox 360 is 13 years old this November.

Something like a mid range Snapdragon 660 powered phone with the Adreno 512 GPU has at least as much raw GPU performance, but far more advanced rendering pipeline and OpenGL API, more available memory etc

Let alone several generation old Snapdragon 820 phones from 2015 with Adreno 530 GPUs. Far more powerful than 360/PS3.

Computersaysno52d ago

You're right. The down votes are a mystery. Maybe ignorance.

A middle of the road smartphone is more powerful than the previous generation consoles.

alright can't wait show us more games asap! can't wait next year yeah but 64gb is so small amount of space need external memory upgrade that sucker. Also steam library should be played got plenty plenty of vr games on there. Hope is all works out!

crazyCoconuts52d ago

Unfortunately for those of us that want better graphics, we're going to need a powerful console / computer driving the headset. No way around that for now

Dom_Estos52d ago

That doesn't matter. This is a good base to start from. In the near future, if we get wireless HMD's, wider FOV and better optics and clearer screens, then it's devices like this that will help pave the way for that.
