Marvel's 'Spider-Man' for PlayStation 4 swings to a record-breaking opening

Marvel’s Spider-Man for PlayStation 4 sold 3.3 million units worldwide in its first three days of release (from September 7 to 9), and has topped the record previously set by God of War earlier this year as the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive title, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced.

One million copies of the game were pre-ordered, which is another record for Sony.

The 3.3 million figure does not factor in sales of Sony’s limited edition PlayStation 4 Pro bundle that includes an “Amazing Red” console and DualShock 4 controller in addition to a copy of the game for $399.99.

3.3 Million in the first 3 days (Fri, Sat & Sun)??? DANG!!!

Sony, Insomniac & Marvel…make a heck of a team!!!

WANNAGETHIGH2043d ago

Just wait until Last of us 2 comes out ☺️

TGGJustin2043d ago

I'm not sure if that will top this honestly. It will have a good chance but Spider-Man also has a bigger appeal than TLOU does. We'll have to wait and see.

sprinterboy2043d ago

Tlou 2 will do great numbers but spiderman appeals to a bigger market Imo, by the time ps4 is discontinued and we've moved onto ps5 I expect spiderman to be the number 1 biggest seller for ps4 with tlou 2 a close second and god of war third.

FITgamer2043d ago

Not saying the TLOU 2 can't beat it, but it's appeals to a smaller market. Most people aren't going to buy TLOU 2 for their 10 year old to play lol.

UltraNova2043d ago

Hot damn! Thats wow...not that really surprised though. The game will probably sell 5 million within its first month, if not more.

Well done Insomniac.

bouzebbal2043d ago

No way it will match this..

shuvam092043d ago

TLOU2 is being made to murder Metacritic...
Sales are just an aftereffect...

Thundercat772043d ago

I am a fan of TLoU but I don't think it could top it. Spider has a bigger audience and kids. TLoU does not have that reach and now with the lesbian stuff, is going to be trickier.

S2Killinit2043d ago

If only TLOU2 would sell less because of its mature nature.

Lime1232043d ago

Yep, first one is currently best selling PlayStation exclusive of all time with 17 million sold across PS3 and PS4.

Realms2043d ago

I'm going to state what has already been written Spiderman is a more recognizable IP with a wider demographic appeal as good as TLOU and naughty dog are I don't think they will break Spiderman new record.

jc122043d ago

Personally, I think TLOU will beat Spiderman sales - and beat them soundly.

bouzebbal2042d ago

b....bb...but that's nothing compared to the install base.
fanboys inevitable next attack.

@Gigastrife It even surpassed my expectations and I was already high on the game it truly is incredible

Ceaser98573612043d ago (Edited 2043d ago )

It also beat Homecoming's 1st Weekend collection.. Damn!.. So With holidays and DLC coming it should cross 10 mil copies easily..

IamTylerDurden12043d ago

Spider-man is in great hands atm. Both Homecoming and Spider-man PS4 are critical and commercial successes. Homecoming was the 2nd highest grossing Spider-man movie of all-time and Spider-man PS4 is the best Spider-man game ever. Venom looks awesome and releases this October and a fantastic looking anim

SuperSonic912043d ago

Is Sony forgiven now for not acquiring Marvel back then?

Spider-Man PS4 will swing Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse film this holiday season and vice versa.

Spider-Man is now Sony's new Golden Goose.

Sony +Marvel+Disney is pure matketing genius!

Ceaser98573612043d ago

I bet their will be sequels to follow... Hope its much bigger ..

IamTylerDurden12043d ago (Edited 2043d ago )

I knew Spider-man would do ridiculous numbers. I said it would have a larger opening than God of War because the preorders, Japanese, and UK sales were trending higher. Even at my local store the turnout was far larger for Spider-man.

Both God of War and Spider-man deserve the sales. These are the best games i've played this year and both were wildly entertaining. Congratulations to Insomniac, Sony, and Marvel. Can't waIt for Spider-man 2 on PS5. Sony now has its own Arkham in a sense. We have a hit.

gravedigger2043d ago

For those who doesn't know. 3.3 mil. are WITHOUT Spiderman bundles

https://twitter.com/eliblum...

This game beated GOW numbers in 3 days and especially, best selling Halo game, Halo 3 numbers, sold in 3.3 mil. copies in 12 days :

https://www.ign.com/article...

Sevir2043d ago

That was in the states tho, as it pertains to NPD... World wide release said something of 8-9 million units for the month. . It's mighty impressive tho that a Console exclusive in this day can sell gang Buster's like that in 3 days.

Insomniac hasn't seen sales like this since the launch of Resistance fall of Fan, it sold 1.5 million at US launch then another 1.5 million when it came to the EU/UK/AUS launches in March the following year.

I'm super proud of Insomniac, they've really put out something of a legend with Spider-Man... Perfect fit...

gravedigger2043d ago (Edited 2043d ago )

@Sevir

True that. Didn't realize it's US. Thanks! Btw. we shall see WW numbers for the month surely

Over a million a day, damn!

SuperSonic912043d ago (Edited 2043d ago )

Wait wait wait!
You mean PS4 single player games sold more than the big AAA multiplats in OPENINGS?
What!?
That is amazing spectacular incredible!
And for MS and EA the SP games are dead?

What a statement by Sony!

IamTylerDurden12043d ago (Edited 2043d ago )

SP hit after SP hit. I love how the likes of Microsoft and EA feel like SP games are no longer profitable to the point of making ridiculous, inflammatory statements and cancelling games simply based on the fact that they are SP. Sony, Bethesda, and a select few are showing the entire industry that if you make great games and market them properly they can do massive numbers regardless of genre.

Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Spider-man, The Last of Us 2. All SP focused games that will most likely be 10 million sellers. That is 5 exclusive games (4 first party) that will each sell 10 million units lifetime, in a single generation. Could be more.

Phil Spencer denounced the financial viability of SP games in this day n age yet Sony is kicking the doors down and breaking records. I know certain people go wild for engagement numbers, but these games are moving units. Hard. sales. Numbers.

HeisenbergX2043d ago

@SuperSonic91 Shhhhhh you MS has backwards compatibility and that's important!

GaboonViper2043d ago

But but but Spencer of Nazareth said SP games......

dualshock2043d ago

I remember DJKing saying GOW wouldn’t sell even 10% of the PS4 user base. He also predicted Spider-Man would be beat out by SNK Heroines... lol

PS going strong.

Sevir2043d ago

To contrast those with God of War, GoW sold 3.1 million in 3 days world wide, Horizon sold 2.4 million world wide in 7 days, Bloodborne sold 1.4 million in 7 days world wide, Uncharted 4 sold 2.4 million in 10 days world wide, Infamous Second Son sold 1 million Units in 9 days world wide. They're on a roll.

Now they're getting ready to amp up Days Gone, but I have a feeling that one might sink. I hope it cracks 2 million and is actually good. All eyes are on Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding which I'm sure will all be strong.

Kribwalker2042d ago

“We’ve got to understand that if we enjoy those games, the business opportunity has to be there for them. I love story-based games. I just finished [LucasArts-inspired RPG] Thimbleweed Park – I thought it was a fantastic game. Inside was probably my game of last year. As an industry, I want to make sure both narrative-driven single-player games and service-based games have the opportunity to succeed. I think that’s critical for us.””

where in there (from the exact same interview immediately after the misconstrued quote) does it say SP games are dead??

https://www.theguardian.com...

No where does he say that

Regardless
I’m looking forward to playing Spider-man later on. Got some other games i wanna get through first

Nyxus2042d ago

@ Kribwalker: "You’ll have things like Zelda or Horizon Zero Dawn that’ll come out, and they’ll do really well, but they don’t have the same impact that they used to have, because the big service-based games are capturing such a large amount of the audience." - Phil Spencer

But he has been proven wrong multiple times by now, if anything their impact is bigger than ever.

MasterCornholio2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

@Nyxus

Well looking at impact games like Spiderman and God of War are more impactful on the industry than games like State of Decay 2 and Sea of Thieves.

So it is possible for Single player games to have a greater impact than some GaaS. Making a game GaaS doesn't automatically guarantee it's sucesss in the market.

Kribwalker2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

@nyxus

and where in there does he say single player games are dead?
“I want to make sure both narrative-driven single-player games and service-based games have the opportunity to succeed. I think that’s critical for us.”

I’d say that that last sentence says quite the opposite.

And for impact, tell me a SP Story driven game that has had as many players, or made as much money as something like Fortnite. Because that’s exactly the type of thing he was talking about. Fortnite has been consistently making over 200 million a month, you won’t find a SP game that would do that. Thus, it would not make as big of an impact

Nyxus2042d ago (Edited 2042d ago )

@ Kribwalker: Read Spencer's quote again. He says the SP games don't have the same impact 'they used to have', so compared to SP games in the past. And that is simply not true looking at the huge record shattering hits from this year alone.

Also, Fortnite is free.

Kribwalker2042d ago

@nyxus

“fortnite is free”
and yet this free game continues to rake in cash
https://www.theverge.com/20...

$300 million, a month after it brought in $200+ million and it continues to drive in huge revenue. Games as a service are huge money makers, and while spider-man could hit $300 million this month (would need to almost double its sales) it’s not going to hit that next month as well.

So Spider-man $300 million one month
Fortnite $300 million one month, $2-300 million the next month, 2-300 million the next month.

What’s a bigger impact there?

I think you need to read his quote again and not be so selective on it

“The audience for those big story-driven games... I won’t say it isn’t as large, but they’re not as consistent,” (HE STATES ITS NOT AS CONSISTENT, BUT SAYS HE WONT SAY IT ISNT AS LARGE) says Spencer. “You’ll have things like Zelda or Horizon Zero Dawn that’ll come out, and they’ll do really well, (SOME SP GAMES WILL DO WELL) but they don’t have the same impact that they used to have, because the big service-based games are capturing such a large amount of the audience (WHICH IS TRUE. THE BIGGEST GAMES OF THE GENERATION ARE SERVICE BASED IE GTA, FIFA) Sony’s first-party studios do a lot of these games, and they’re good at them, but outside of that, it’s difficult – they’re become more rare” (SONY DOES GOOD WITH SINGLE PLAYER GAMES, BUT ITS DIFFICULT FOR OTHERS)

and then he goes on to state his love of single player games. You guys keep trying the same tire narrative which isn’t true. At no time did he say SP is dying

Nyxus2042d ago

@ Kribwalker: are you seriously saying Fortnite is the norm? For every Fortnite there is also a game like Lawbreakers.

HE STATES ITS NOT AS CONSISTENT, BUT SAYS HE WONT SAY IT ISNT AS LARGE - which has been proven WRONG.

SOME SP GAMES WILL DO WELL - not some, many.

WHICH IS TRUE. THE BIGGEST GAMES OF THE GENERATION ARE SERVICE BASED IE GTA, FIFA - and the biggest PlayStation exclusives are single player only game. If the quality is there, they can make a lot of money, no GAAS needed.

SONY DOES GOOD WITH SINGLE PLAYER GAMES, BUT ITS DIFFICULT FOR OTHERS - so what? What is his point exactly? Microsoft is one of the big three with tons of money, so the fact that it's 'difficult' is a weak excuse.

Phil didn't literally say 'SP is dead', that's true. But let's look at what he does say, and what he means by it. He is suggesting that in the current climate releasing SP only games isn't really viable, except for maybe a few hits here and there. But Sony has been releasing one record breaking SP game after the other, and even if they don't break records, they do well enough to be viable. So his suggestion that services are necessary just isn't true.

Kribwalker2042d ago

“@ Kribwalker: are you seriously saying Fortnite is the norm? For every Fortnite there is also a game like Lawbreakers”

and for every spider-man there is multiple games like gravity rush 2, or even Evil Within 2, a big budget SP game that was well received but under performed.

“SOME SP GAMES WILL DO WELL - not some, many”

and many will crash and burn. it’s the same for both SP and MP.

“and the biggest PlayStation exclusives are single player only game. If the quality is there, they can make a lot of money, no GAAS needed.”

and not one of them has sold more than a game like GTAV on PS4 . So would that be more or less impact?

“Phil didn't literally say 'SP is dead', that's true. But let's look at what he does say, and what he means by it.”

And now you are changing the interview to fit your narrative and in no way have you proved what you guys say “phil spencer says SP games are dead”

Kribwalker2042d ago

Case in point of GAAS games making a bigger impact than SP games.

http://n4g.com/news/2205024...

How many SP games have 78 million people playing them? What single player game gets mentioned by analyst as a direct contributing factor to a Year To Date dollar growth of 40% on total sales in the video game industry.

Congratulations, Insomniac!

And to think, some on here were saying it’s numbers wouldn’t be that impressive or possibly be able to even compete with God of War. Spidey is much bigger than I think some realized.

Aside from these remarkable numbers, it just makes me so happy that Insomniac has delivered on bringing fans a fantastic video game. They wanted to be up there in quality as Sony’s other first party studios, and they definitely delivered.

3.3 million is just wow haha. Hard work pays off!

CarlDechance2043d ago (Edited 2043d ago )

"some on here were saying it’s numbers wouldn’t be that impressive"

oh....don't worry. The negative spin will continue. Next is the inevitable blurb that sales are not *really* good because of the number of PS4s sold. You can expect it from the usual suspects unfortunately.

ClayRules20122043d ago

Yeah, that’s a good point. Same with the claims of “Downgrade” for Sony’s upcoming PS4 exclusives next year. Just plain silly.

CarlDechance2043d ago

lol....it is all so predictable at this point.

LucasRuinedChildhood2043d ago

Insomniac have always made great games but they've never had a game sell anywhere near this amount. They must be ecstatic.

ClayRules20122043d ago (Edited 2043d ago )

Well said. I can’t imagine their excitement. I’m so darn happy for them. It must be a wonderful feeling to know you made a great game that gamers are loving (gotta be so much pride in that) and to know it sells so well, beyond what you ever expected, is the little icing on the cake.

Only joshing, I love Insomniac too, they are a developer I have 100% confidence in.

dualshock2043d ago (Edited 2043d ago )

I mean it pales in comparison to Spidey, but the Ratchet and Clank reboot WAS their best selling title ever. I remember seeing an article on here... if I am wrong, apologies in advance.

LucasRuinedChildhood2043d ago

@LoveSpuds I'd put that game's failings down to EA being the publisher considering it changed so much from reveal to launch.

Why? According to the well publicized Insomniac leaks they have a slew of plans for Spiderman including its sequel.

CrimsonWing6919d ago

The sequel has had rumors that it could be sold piecemeal style or might be GaaS.

https://youtu.be/XCFr3KRB9G...

This is all coming from the leaks you mentioned. The problem is the industry is not doing well no matter how ill-informed people spin it on here when they see “sold 3 mill.” In those Sony leaks it showed the struggle to get ROI and they spend an insane amount of money to develop, which makes 0 sense to me when there’s not much to show for the increased development costs. Case in point would be Suicide Squad vs Arkham Knight.

I believe we’re in the middle of seeing a drastic change in media and distribution. This goes for movies, but more so for games and the industry is scrambling to figure out how to get more money out of consumers rather than stick to the “buy it once” to play it all.

https://www.gamesindustry.b...

https://www.theverge.com/20...

These are things you need to pay attention to in order to know which direction the wind’s blowing with this sh*t storm. I was almost certain the GaaS initiative was killed when Jim was leaving, but now seeing the success of Helldivers 2… I’m thinking we’re in for a bumpy ride. I just don’t know what that looks like yet, but I don’t think it’s gonna be pretty.

anast19d ago (Edited 19d ago )

Insomniac still has a good generation left in them before they get cannibalized by investors. It'll probably happen around the mid PS6 gen, when we see the beginning of the fall.

dmonee19d ago

Huh with this article? If Sony and Insomniac want to abandoned the Spider-Man franchise and make a half baked, live service Spider-Man game, and miss the mark with their fans, then God bless’em!!!!

19d ago
JimmyDM9018d ago

Seems unlikely when they abandoned the GaaS spiderverse game but are still going ahead with single player games like Wolverine and Spider-Man 3.
