It's time to give licensed games more creative freedom

Chris Hovermale: "Insomniac’s Spider-Man is quickly becoming one of my favorite games of 2018 because it’s Insomniac’s Spider-Man. It’s not simply another game with Spider-Man’s face on it, nor is it just another superhero game; it’s a game with its own identity that succeeds at what it sets out to do, and superbly at that."

Plenty of licensed games already take great liberties & creative freedom with their source material

porkChop90d ago (Edited 90d ago )

The Chronicles of Riddick and older Star Wars games come to mind. We've had many fantastic licensed games.

sampsonon89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

you named a few out of hundreds. hence the word "most".

porkChop89d ago

Those were just off the top of my head. We've had plenty of great licensed games. Movie tie-ins are often bad, but most licensed games aren't tie-ins.

TekoIie89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

@Sampsonon

Most don't get the budget of games like Spiderman, Star Wars and Riddick.

They more than likely have a similar amount of freedom (althought i'd say that's more because the backers dont care that much) but are constrained by dev time and budget. It's very easy for us to say licenced games can be successful once they're given the backing of a huge publisher like Sony and an experienced team like Insomniac but most companies can't get that sort of backing so easily.

jmtstan89d ago

GoldenEye, Termintor 2 Arcade, Dune 2, Alien Trilogy, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, are among the good movie adaptation games of the 90s.

Was going to say "No? Really!" but then this is a fluke. The right studio given "freedom" to work on what was likely to be a tie-in game for Amazing Spiderman 3 if two hadn't tanked. If it hadn't, largely because of Sony's meddling, Insomniac probably would have suffered script and plot restrictions in order to keep the game close to the movie.

More than likely the success of this game will spur a new wave of hero titles, already got some coming from...Squire Enix, but they're going to have heavy hands on them with no respect for the source material.

The ignorance is strong in this one. Why dafuq do so many people think movies have anything to do with the creation of this game?

When Marvel approached Sony, and not the other way around, to make a title using their property to give it the kind of quality their first party titles tend to have, they didn’t specify which property to work on. When Sony reached out to Insomniac to develop such a title, the developer was given the choice to work on any Marvel property. They just happened to choose Spider-Man.

This information is widely available. How could a game that could’ve been based on any Marvel property of the developer’s choosing be in any way related to a movie? This ignorance needs to be stopped.

You don’t even see SIE making movie tie-in games for the movies Sony Pictures distributes, so why would anybody think that’d somehow be a factor now?

Godmars29089d ago

"You don’t even see SIE making movie tie-in games for the movies Sony Pictures distributes, so why would anybody think that’d somehow be a factor now?"

Because there's been a Spiderman game made in relation to a movie. Also in light of the friction between Sony and Marvel over the character.

Goldby89d ago

@godmars

Ans there's been movie tie ins for. Batman games in the past, so why is it hard to accept that the game had nothing to do with a cancelled film if arkham had nothing yo do with the Nolan trilogy

Godmars29089d ago

It wasn't just the one movie. Sony, who had possession of the IP, saw how the MCU was doing and wanted some of that money. So they made a major - idiotic - media push including a Sinister Six movie, a Venom movie, a Silver Sable movie, a CG Spiderverse movie(s) and even a Secret Agent Aunt May movie. Plans that fell apart in light of ASM2 bombing which allowed Marvel to reclaim Spiderman for for Civil War and Homecoming.

PhoenixUp89d ago

Omg are you seriously that ignorant? Did you not just read that Insomniac had the choice to make any Marvel property? There’s no way this was connected to any movie. That’s as stupid as saying Batman: Arkham Asylum is a movie tie-in for The Dark Knight.

It seems your head is so thick that no amount of factual evidence can convince you that movie politics had nothing to do with this game.

"If it hadn't, largely because of Sony's meddling" how so?

"Was going to say "No? Really!" but then this is a fluke. The right studio given "freedom" to work on what was likely to be a tie-in game for Amazing Spiderman 3 if two hadn't tanked."

Homecoming worldwide :$880,166,924
Amazing Spider man 2 :$708,982,323

I guess Homecoming "tanked as well eh?

i liked the Amazing Spider-man series. it felt more realistic, less campy. it was more grounded in my opinion.

FallenAngel198490d ago

The headline makes that statement like we haven’t seen that happen in this industry.

Yeah we’ve had plenty licensed properties that feel pretty much run by committee, but that doesn’t cancel out the decades of quality licensed properties we’ve seen in the industry.

Seems like another case of another “this recent game is great, a lot of other games should follow its example even if many examples existed prior” type of article.

AspiringProGenji90d ago (Edited 90d ago )

We have seen that happen but not as much. This decade the only licenced that was successful was Batman Arkham, eveything else was shitty thor, green lantern, ironman, Hulk, Spiderman, and more movie licensed games.

Spiderman PS4 is the start, for marvel at least, to give their ips the treatment they deserve. Next is Square enix’s avengers.

FallenAngel198489d ago (Edited 89d ago )

We haven’t seen much? 🙄

Here’s an entire page dedicated to the numerous quality licensed gaming properties that have proliferated this industry for decades, especially a lot of successful ones.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki...

You’re really limiting your view of what licensed games are by only looking at comic book superhero games. It’d be ignorant to say Batman: Arkham Asylum is the only successful one, especially in the past decade.

IamTylerDurden189d ago (Edited 89d ago )

Sure, there many examples of developers using a license to great effect. Tell Tale has consistently treated the IPs they use with great respect and they continue to churn out quality products. Many of the Japanese/anime based licensed games turn out to be successful ventures as well. But please do not act like our industry hasn't had a major problem with cash-ins and overexploited trash when it comes to big licensed games. This issue has plagued our industry for decades. From E.T. to Superman, Jaws, Avatar, Green Lantern, Saw, Bad Boys, Thor, Hannah Montana, Allen, Harry Potter, Catwoman, Iron Man, The Matrix, Constantine, Karate Kid, Barbie ect. Games Radar has an article about the 50 worst movie based games ever. Not top 10 or 20, but 50! And that is just movies. It just shows you how many bad licensed games there are.

“But please do not act like our industry hasn't had a major problem with cash-ins and overexploited trash when it comes to big licensed games”

Please learn to actually read comments before replying to them.

In my first post I said

“Yeah we’ve had plenty licensed properties that feel pretty much run by committee, but that doesn’t cancel out the decades of quality licensed properties we’ve seen in the industry.”

Like I said, the amount of bad licensed games does not negate the quality licensed titles over the decades.

AspiringProGenji89d ago

Most of those games in that blog aren't from this Decade. Aladdin and Lion King? really?

FallenAngel198489d ago

There are plenty of games from this decade on that article. If you can’t see that then you barely even read it

Yeah they did a good job starting in the middle. It’s not origin Spider-Man or avengers Spider-Man, it’s just a seasoned Spider-Man that has already put the criminals that you’re chasing away once before. A Spider-Man game with venom and carnage built on this foundation is going to be hype as shit. Venom PS5 bundle 😏

Outlawzz89d ago

Yea I'm happy I didn't have to see Uncle ben die for the millionth time. One of the most tragic deaths in comic book lore to me and so overdone lol I'm traumatized from Uncle Ben by now

AK9189d ago

Tell that to it publishers not to us.
