PS4 God of War Harvests $131M Digital Revenue in Its Launch Month;

During its launch month, God of War for Sony’s PlayStation 4 raked in $131 million in digital revenue alone.

The sales data comes from an article on ‘The maturation of narrative in video games’ from market research company SuperData.

I'd really like to know how much the game cost to make and how much was used for advertisement.

The game probably costed somewhere of 50-80m to make. Marketing is probably 50%-70% of production budget. So it could be anywhere of 75-136m total cost.

However it's quite difficult to estimate since teams grow bigger later in production, parts are outsourced, then there is expertise from other studios that could have jumped in. Additionally for marketing the push has been mainly online and cinema ads with some commercials. I guess most important looking how the revenue was over 300 million in its first month and sony gets about 2/3 since they own the studio and distribute the game it is clear the game has been profitable after the first month. Maybe 64m dollars profit, or maybe 125m profits. Every sale after the first weekend actually is increasing profit so it could be at 200m profit by now.

But you don't have to believe me. I'm just a guy online. My advice. Go play the game, be part of the narrative.

If they made horizon for 40 million, GOW is probably in the 40-50 million range as well. Probably another 20-30 million in marketing, but some of that was probably wrapped up in ps4 marketing as well.

Basically, the game is already making money. Same thing happened with horizon. This is only digital revenue, not including physical sales.

Goes to show that SP narrative games aren't as complicated as.one person wanted to have us believe.

I don’t think it was ever about single player games being complicated. Some just don’t want to do anything unless they can make people pay a subscriptiom for it. Multiplayer games you can do that with and people are more willing to pay it for some reason. Not me, but also you’re not going to get someone to pay a monthly fee to play a single player game. At least I would hope not.

It's great, but I wish I hadn't platinumed it in the first week. It would be nice if they announced some DLC, even something for gear grinding, similar to what's already available, but just decked out with more gear, harder bosses, etc. Idk. I just want more.

unreal that they likely covered development and marketing with digital revenue alone. Crazy also that they likely have seen profit from only the digital revenue stream! I would estimate this was roughly $80+ million to create and advertise, now add all the sales from physical media/custom PS4/Collectors Ed. and wow!

GOW may be the template for future Sony 1st party releases: Game/Collector statue Ed./Custom PS4. It seems to be good business so far.

Take note EA. If you make a quality single player title, profits will come from it. It's insane how GOW managed to beat both Uncharted 4 and Witcher 3's combined revenue in their respective launch month. Congrats to SSM.

What's even funnier is that If EA got their shit together and put all that money into an internal super team, gave them all the time they need and creative freedom to create a brand new SP game they would be able to to go toe to toe with the likes of Rockstar's GTA in sales. But I digress.

As for GOW what more can I say its was a true juggernaut of a game fully deserving of all the praise and sales it gets.

I still can't believe we have no Star wars story based games yet. Why the literal [email protected]$# has EA squandered such a golden opportunity. We have 2 battlefronts... This is Star Wars for crying out loud! I wish Disney would dish out the license rather than going exclusively with EA.

A God of War type of game doesn't come around very often. When it does it's great but when it doesn't, it's a waste of 5+ years of resources. EA/Ubisoft/Activision are not going to allow one of their teams to spend that much time on one game that could potentially be a dud. They'd rather put out multiple games that cost less that have a built-in revenue stream.

For example, if Sony were to leave the hardware business and put their games on all other platforms, do you really think we'd be getting games of the quality as Horizon, Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War? No we wouldn't. Sony wouldn't let their studios spend 5 years per game and certainly wouldn't get the huge budgets or the leeway. The only reason it happens now is because they need software as a differentiating factor for their hardware. That's why I find it funny when people say they should put their games on all platforms. Sure they'll sell more but the quality won't be there.

Pubs like EA aren't idiots. They don't make games like Sony because they can't. They choose not to.

Thats why I specifically said that they should form an internal team comprised of their top talent and and not to taska n existing team on that project and thus disrupting their normal business.

I won’t ever say that Sony should put their games on all platforms. Yes that’s why we have such amazing exclusives. The other 3 take the easy road and make bad games that have a constant revenue stream. I want to see that model die but people keep buying into it.

While that's probably true eat still make around GTA type sales overall by releasing 3+ games in the same time frame it took to make GTA. Many of GTA sells we're cross gen. Ppl buying it last gen then buying it again when they bought a next gen console (me included) and I'm willing to bet money at least 30% of GTA sells we're cross gen rebuys

With those sales numbers SSM and Cory Barlog's team should be able to do just about anything they want with the next several games in the series. GoW was an amazing experience and I can't wait for part two of the story. Really hoping for a 2020 release. 1 and 2 were two years apart. Let's hope.

But bear in mind that expectations are already high (like skyrocket high) for the sequel, so SSM has a really tough job. I wouldn't want to be in their shoes right now.
