I cant think of anything Sony could put out that could help PS4 keep its lead.

Myst-Vearn36d ago

but does it matter? PS4 Has been a huge success everywhere including Japan, being outdone by the Nintendo Switch in one region won't change that.

kevnb35d ago

its doing ok in japan, its not a huge success there.

Concertoine35d ago

The PS3, which had a really soft launch there, is outselling it in the same timeframe.

They just dont want consoles there.

More games that would encourage people to stay with the platform. They are definitely hurting for an online shooter. Reboot Killzone or Resistance perhaps? Add BR modes, of course...

The article is referring to Japan, I don't think those series' would be all that impactful over there. I know Splatoon does very well in JP, but I'm not sure how well the average AAA shooter does sales wise.

Fortnite and PUBG are big over there right now...

kevnb35d ago

@Christopher in japan? I bet most people in japan dont even know what pubg is... PUBG is big in China, not japan.

Christopher35d ago

BR games are popular in Japan as well, just not as popular as China (like most games). Overwatch is also popular.

I think people are thinking I'm saying this will vastly improve sales, I'm just saying I do absolutely think the right MP shooter will boost sales in Japan and provide something only third parties provide right now.

There's always more you can do.

Keep in mind, that sales are quicker at start up. The Switch definitely looks on its way to outsell PS4 in Japan, but the sales could also taper off at a certain point and slow down.

Either way, both consoles provide quality first party games and different experiences so they'll be successful together.

The Switch isn't going to slow down in Japan for the next 3 years.

Well there isn't any til Kingdom Hearts III

The 10th Rider35d ago

I mean, even Monster Hunter only provided a short boost. It's been a while since a mainline entry, so it's tough to tell, but I don't think Kingdom Hearts is any bigger than Monster Hunter or Dragon Quest.

DJK1NG_Gaming35d ago

@The 10th Rider
Well of course it not any bigger but Disney is pretty big in Japan.
That alone could mean Kingdom Hearts III could give a week or two boost,

@Concertoine

There's nothing they can do, because JP is home to the Japanese handheld, and regardless of the Switch being hybrid, it is their current handheld. Consoles struggle to break 10m in JP, Nintendo handhelds are expected to sell over 20m.

CBaoth35d ago

it's no hybrid. A HDMI out doesn't constitute a hybrid. Pairing a gamepad to the device doesn't constitute a hybrid - I can do that with my phone. If the dock featured an external GPU to augment the system's power, then yes. If the dock even included a HDD to supplement storage, then maybe. But I won't dignify Nintendo's sleazy PR and call the Switch anything but a handheld. And yes I own one.

You're absolutely right though; Switch will dismantle PS4 over its lifetime in Japan. This article is a terrible comparison. I would much rather discuss Switch sales aligned with with DS, and 3DS and see how current the platform is faring against past iterations. That won't put butts in the seats i suppose though right?

@CBaoth
It not the device, It's the concept of the device.
The ability to seamlessly switch between TV and Handheld
with no delay.

That's pretty amazing. I'd definitely say the difference due to the region helps in general but it's definitely attributed to the culture imo. Mad props to ninty, I'm thinking about picking one up this weekend.
