E3 2018: Final Fantasy 7 Remake Has Moved Beyond 'Early Concept Stages'

Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Remake was one of the biggest no-shows at E3 2018, and it may still be a long ways off from release. But Tetsuya Nomura today gave fans a sliver of hope, stating that the remake has at least moved past the conceptual stage and into full development.

They still started over with new development,it'll be in the middle of next gen before we play this game.

Lovable101d ago

Sad. I'll be damn 40 before I play this...Ridiculous

mikeslemonade101d ago

Hopefully it’s gonna be a PS5 launch exclusive.

G3ng4r101d ago

"Play it first on playstation." This was announced as a multiplat. Not that timed exclusitivity or your feelings matter, no one is playing this for at least three years.

@G3ng4r

Ummm...ok not sure where that came from...

Elda101d ago

I'll be well into my 50's....lol.

G3ng4r101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

@remixx116 That was for mikes whose post is directly above mine. I don't usually take the opportunity to explain myself or how forums/comment sections work but I'll help you out because you seem easily confused.

I'm not interested in playing episodically so i'll be waiting for a complete edition. I have to wait so long.

JAWx423101d ago

I'm not sure if you're aware, but Square have said that this is episodic in the same way that Lighting Returns is. It's gonna be more like a trilogy than a bunch of few hour bits of gameplay if I'm not mistaken.

Gardenia101d ago

I've heard they started over but is there proof of this or is it just a rumor?

G3ng4r101d ago

Google "ff7 cyberconnect2".

Harkins1721101d ago

According to rumors? Stop believing shit from 4chan

3-4-5101d ago

Honestly we won't be playing this game until 2022. That isn't an exaggeration either, it's an accurate guess. They take forever to make games....longer than they need to.

-Foxtrot101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

Sad that it’s taken this long because it means the FFVIII Remake will take longer

GNCFLYER101d ago

Yeah they really fucked this up. I'll stay play it but no more hype and I'll believe it when I see it.

Shouldnt this had happened in 2016?

G3ng4r101d ago

Were it nearly anyone other than squeenix or kojima, yes. Some developers are like authors who say they're working on that new book for years in a row when they really kind of aren't.

Derceto101d ago

Nice. A game announced in 2015, is now beyond the "early concept stages".

Well done SE. You clearly are, in a league of your own.

Nebaku101d ago

Yeah, a Triple-A remake to one of the largest games of all time taking more than three years to make? Ridiculous am I right?

Razmiran101d ago

3 years to make and 3 years after announcement to get out of "EArly concept stage" are different things

G3ng4r101d ago

It's honestly almost too big a project. Remember the scope of all those prerendered backgrounds? If they don't make a ffxiii style corridor out of this game it could take literal decades to fully render all of that ground in 3d. We'll have to see what sort of balance they go for.

FinalFantasyFanatic101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

This is what I've been arguing all along, the sheer amount of content and Square-Enix's reluctance to do towns, the splitting of the game into episodes, Square-Enix's poor management... I can't see this game pleasing fans who played the original game. It might be satisfactory for everyone else though.

Sirk7x101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

They outsourced it, and then realized the two years of work that the studio had done were crap, so they scrapped the entire game and brought it back inhouse. Basically canceled the game and restarted it this year. Gonna be a loong time. Troubling, and similar to the work on FF Versus XIII getting scrapped as well. FFXVII ended up taking ten years...

Kados101d ago

FFXIV also. Seems like a trend for Squeenix. Outsource a big game to a small Chinese company, realize a couple years later that they do not know what they are doing, then restart it in-house. You would expect them to have learned a lesson by now.

xRacer74x101d ago

Geez I hope so. its been what 3 or 4 years now since they announced it.
