Why A Nintendo 64 Classic Edition Might Not Be Such A Good Idea

by Jon Cousins:
"First things first, I loved the N64. It was the first console that I bought games for with my own money. I pre-ordered The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with a coupon from the back of a magazine and paid for it by post with a cheque. Whether it be single or multiplayer, some of my fondest and most beloved gaming memories come from playing on the N64, whether it be messing around outside Princess Peach's castle for two hours before realising the first level was actually inside, to doing loops to avoid a pair of incoming laser beams in Star Fox 64, to hating the one random guy at a party who'd always pick OddJob in GoldenEye 007. Early polygon models look like ass. The NES and SNES games still look good because they are sprite based.

...is not only that but also N64 had almost no worthy games on it, except 2...Mario 64 and maybe Zelda Ocarina of time .....everything else was not that classic

Or Banjo, or Goldeneye, or mario Kart, or Perfect Dark, or Turok. The console had at least 20 games that you must play.

Neonridr85d ago

are you smoking crack?

Mario 64
Goldeneye
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Banjo Kazooie
Banjo Tooie
Perfect Dark
Donkey Kong 64
Mario Kart 64
Diddy Kong Racing
Blast Corps
Pilotwings 64
Wave Race 64
Smash Bros
Star Fox 64
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Rogue Squadron
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire

and these were just pulled off the top of my head. I am sure there are plenty I am omitting.

It's true that the golden days of 3D games were not so golden when looking back now. Sprite based games definitely hold up much better to age.

Gh05t85d ago

That doesnt make it a bad idea though.

Neonridr85d ago

@Gh05t - oh believe me, if they come out with one I will be immediately down on that preorder, lol.

Uken1285d ago

Yeah they were dude. Many games still use Z Targeting, Mario 64 gave the structure on how to make good 3d controls. The golden days of gaming were awesome and the games still live up to this day.

Neonridr84d ago

@Uken12 - I am simply referring to visuals. Obviously the early 3D games set the standards for things like camera control, targeting, etc. We are more or less talking about how sprites hold up so much better than early polygonal games.

you wouldn't be able to include any Rare game besides maybe DK64. You wouldn't be able to include Pokemon Stadium due to the Transfer Pak requirement. No Goldeneye or World is Not Enough due to licensing issues. Same can be said for Turok and Shadow Man (comic book characters). I have no idea of who owns the IP rights for Midway Games (which were a good chunk of the good multiplayer titles for the franchise). Nintendo's own NBA Courtsise would be a dated no-no. Wave Race would face licensing issues with Kawasaki. Same with 1080 Snowboarding and Tommy Hilfiger.

All in all, it would be a licensing nightmare.
