What The Hell Happened To Metal Gear’s Story After Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater?

More and more throughout the years, video games have been growing as a stronger and more efficient medium of storytelling, and while there are several games that can be credited for making important strides in that respect, the one name that comes to mind more than most is Metal Gear Solid.

Nothing, MGS4 was stellar. MGSV is where things went wrong (very very wrong).

TheEnigma31335d ago

I agree. MGSV was good but underwhelming. Konami is at fault for not letting Kojima do his thing.

Mista201835d ago (Edited 35d ago )

Kojima is at fault for wasting funds and time on swimsuit models (Joosten) and his useless, overly expensive former L.A. studio. The budget was over inflated, investors were furious, konami angered, fans dealing with long delays. Yes games get delayed a lot, but the final product of mgs 5 was a culmination of incomplete (though thankfully bug-free) game. For al those years, a genius like Kojima produced a very incomplete game that drags on for hours using repetitive missions, with a terrible plot. He had MORE than enough time and had an open purse to Konami's funds, yet produced so little for the game in that time. I'm a massive fan of his, but his ego got way out of line during those years.

@ Mista2018

Holy crap, THANK YOU MISTA2018!!!

It's so refreshing to see someone say it like it is with no bias. You hit the nail on the head. I'm actually shocked you have people agreeing with you, though.

Kojima has become this "sacred cow" that you can't usually say anything negative about or else you get jumped on and disagreed to hell and back.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Kojima has done fantastic things in the past. But his time on MGS5 was wasted and people actually had the nerve to blame Konami for it. Did they act like pricks? Possibly. No one really knows for sure though. There are stories, like Kojima being locked in an office and not allowed out (lol) but no hard evidence.

MGSV was amazing, its just missing the heavy story based elements the other games had. When you make such a huge change to a beloved series some people will be upset no doubt.

RacerX35d ago

I'll never forget my first encounter with Mantis, and all the great storytelling... My first experience with MGS stuck with me for decades, as some sort of pinnacle for gaming genius in my childhood anyway.

MGSV was a fun stealth game. But it was no "MGS".

GamesMaster198235d ago

Yes Konami but also Kojima they are both at fault. I mean Kojima wanted the game to appeal to new casual gamers also so removed most of the best thing's that made MGS in the first place, like no codec, less story cutscenes, boss battles that don't hold a candle to previous titles etc. Both are to blame. I still loved the game enough to see it through to the platinum, but i don't think i would ever play it again like i still do the previous titles.

Greg280135d ago

@

Aah you worked together with kojima that you know all this stuff right?

We will never know what exactly happened with kojima and konami.

All previous mgs games were amazing.
So it would be weird if this was all kojimas fault.

I dont think he had all the freedom he needed for mgs5.
Just look at how good Death Stranding already looks with the complete freedom he has now

Kostche34d ago

@Mista the funny thing is i enjoyed MGS5 Ground Zero more than phantom pain, and i agree with everything you said, Kojima dropped the ball, he could have made open world game with good story and great characters, but instead we go empty rinse and repat world, weak characters, hardly and decent story, made to play no named nobody medic, that is not Konami doing, that is Kojima and his ego

Tross34d ago

@TheEnigma313 Kojima also made it clear that he didn't want to make another MGS game, but Konami made him work on MGS5 anyways, whereas his heart was in previous titles. It's not that difficult to figure out what went wrong here.

What happened was the story became silly and overwrought because kojima loves himself so intensely. See also kingdom hearts and nomura. Oh well, it's sony's expensive problem now.

G3ng4r34d ago

It was announced in 2015 that the game was being made and so far we have a couple cgi trailers with a celebrity cast. We also still know next to nothing about it. For all we do know kojima is losing his way and botches this hard. But hey, they say laughter heals all wounds.

TheEnigma31335d ago

I'm not understanding this article. This is a prequel. Buy the collection and play them in story order. This one takes place before the MG series on NES.

2pacalypsenow34d ago

The originals were on MSX not Nintendo, those weren’t even made by Kojima.

kevnb35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

gamingbolt... Metal Gear Solid is one of the few game series where I actually cared what happened and what people had to say. Most games are so far behind in terms of story its hard to even compare them.

Deep-throat35d ago

There is something I really like about the stories in MGS games: Kojima's crazy plot twists. That's why I defend the ending of MGS5, even though the game is unfinished.

2pacalypsenow35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

"Because, of course, this led to the birth of the ultimate deus ex machina, the one we all know as “nanomachines”,"

Nanomachines were first Mentioned in MGS(1998) not MGS4...

"The one thing that simply cannot be defended or explained away, though, is the mother of all retcons. You all know what I’m talking about- the infamous twist at the end of The Phantom Pain. The reveal that the guy we spent the entire game playing as – Venom Snake – was not the real Big Boss. He was just a body double- literally just “some guy”."

This I do agree with though, you're telling me that the legendary soldier is not any better than a medic?

MGS5 was a shitty MGS game.

Kostche34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

exactly, why i prefer Ground Zero to Phantom Pain, Ground Zero should have been the game direction, instead they changed it to Phantopm Pain open world rinse and repeat * the gameplay and fredom was great, but to lose everything else? Great villans and heroes, great story telling? hell no, and i will be honest playing no named nobody triggerd me so much, i wanted to play my hero, i love 1 & 3, 4 and Peace walker

and what happen to my codec convos :( i miss that

CorndogBurglar33d ago

Even MGS2 was great. Even though you play as Raiden in that one. But it was still a great game and felt like a normal MGS game.

CorndogBurglar34d ago

"Nanomachines were first Mentioned in MGS(1998) not MGS4..."

While that's true, if you are looking at it from the story-telling perspective, he's technically not wrong. MGS3 took place BEFORE MGS1. So technically MGS3 did lead to the birth of nano-machines.

They may have been present in MGS1, but MGS3 shows the birth of them.

2pacalypsenow34d ago (Edited 34d ago )

Well yeah becuase MGS3 is a prequel to the whole Metal Gear saga.

MGS4 just wrapped up the story, and did a materful job.

Best game in the series imo.
