At this point, it is pretty evident that a new Xbox and a new PlayStation are coming. They may still be a few years away, but the successors to the PS4 and Xbox One are inevitably coming, and they will join the party with the Nintendo Switch.
I think the new consoles will feature more GaaS than ever. Hopefully it won´t have a significant impact on SP games.
I'm sure Phil and the xbox will pursue GaaS, MT's and loot boxes as much as they can get away with. Bu,t I can't see Sony changing what has worked so well for them which is making high quality games that don't need Mt's or loot boxes to be profitable. But as for the article. I don't realty want to see consoles become as open as Steam. For PC it's ok because it has historically been an open system. On consoles however the high level of curation ensures some level of quality.

The thing that i think most gamers fail to understand, is the fact that neither Microsoft or Sony are pushing for GaaS, MT´s and loot boxes for their first party games. However, they are not forbidding developers from doing such thing either. After the Forza 7 loot boxes controversy, i think most studios will avoid to play with again. There´s no loot boxes on SoT and State of Decay will only feature paid dlc. No MTs no No Loot boxes. I think Forza Horizon 4 and Crackdown 3 studios will follow suit. While Gow is clean from GaaS, the same can´t be said about MLB The Show 18, Uncharted and possibly the next The Last of Us. Kodera is the new CEO and that man is pure GaaS. I belive Sony will continue to do what their are doing. But i don´t trust Kodera.
@Obscure_Observer Don't think your observation about MS first /second party not pushing this crap is right,.. Forza,.. hell even Ryse had it plenty,..
for PS God forbid. xbox can continue that for all I care.
The thing is Sony has tried GaaS with Paragon and other titles and has (thankfully) failed miserably with them. Only quality SP games sell for them.
Think you should be allowed to play online with a friend on the same game who has ps plus even if you don't yourself.
