“The Xbox One has sold 36.57 million units, while its predecessor the Xbox 360 sold 38.90 million units.“

“The Xbox 360 currently leads by 2.33 million.”

Wow at that drop off.
https://ibb.co/cHDQK7

Good job Phil. The downward trend will continue until they restructure and get the people currently running Xbox out. Also get a new team that can actually design a dashboard that isn’t trash.

lxeasy2194d ago

Oh no if this is true they are in bigger trouble than I thought.

WilliamSheridan2193d ago

I hate to say it, but 2 million is not a big deal at all. It's selling comparatively well to the 360. And the 360 was not a flop by any means. Can we move on now?

Magnetar2193d ago

How are they in trouble? Last gen they also had people buying multiple consoles due to the rrod. Which everyone said inflateded their numbers.

darthv722194d ago

so when are people going to factor in the RRoD? That was all we heard last gen in comparisons between 360 and PS3 so why arent we hearing it this time between 360 and XBO????

2194d ago
darthv722194d ago

Well MS is not wrong. I mean they counted units sold at retail not units sent in for repairs. I'd guess and say only 50-60% of RRoD cases were sent in to be fixed for free while the rest of the people just went out and bought a replacement unit.

A sale is a sale regardless if it is a first time buyer or someone getting a replacement. But... taking into account the RRoD situation and looking at how the XBO is doing we can see the XBO is doing better than the 360 because there is no such issues to be found this gen like last. So every unit sold is a legit unit sold be it to a first timer or someone who just wanted to upgrade to an S or an X.

Just like on the PS3 and how there is a percentage who sold their fat to get the slim or replaced a defective unit with a new one (seeing as Sony didnt offer free repairs).

rainslacker2193d ago (Edited 2193d ago )

I'm pretty sure MS doesn't want to bring that up, why should we?

Also, MS never clarified if the repaired units were considered shipped, and they certainly never stated how many people brought new consoles to replace an existing console, so trying to bring it up seems rather counter productive as it's just a guessing game.

Magnetar2193d ago

Not everyone that had the rrod sent theirs in for repair. A majority of console owners are unaware of things like this.

UltraNova2193d ago

Darth,

I cant believe my eyes...so now rrod affected 360 sales? It took you 10+ years but you got there, even if its to defend the xb1...

darthv722193d ago

@ultra, why does that surprise you? Last gen, when people were calling out the numbers I was saying that a sale is still a sale but in reality we all know there were not 85+ million individuals with 360's. Just as there aren't 85+ million individuals with PS3's or even 150+ million individuals with PS2's.

Come on now... many have admitted to buying multiple units themselves so it should come as no surprise when we see other systems not meet or exceed the number of the former. I have 3 360's myself and 4 PS2's and it happens the reason I have them is because they are variants. And i like collecting variants. No different than a person buying a slim after having a fat unit. They are the same person but each system counts as a unit sold.

It didnt take 10 years, I always believed that but the thing is people wanted to call foul when it came to 360 vs PS3 so why would that change now that it is 360 vs XBO?

UnHoly_One2193d ago

This is hilarious.

Using their own argument against them, only now it doesn't matter because it suits them better this way.

They even go so far as to accuse you of changing your opinion on it, all the while completely oblivious to themselves changing their own tune.

You couldn't script this kind of idiocy.

Well played Sony Fanboys, you made my day.

"Good job Phil. The downward trend will continue until they restructure and get the people currently running Xbox out."

Don´t get your hopes up. Phil just got promoted to VP and is now one of the 16 more powerfull men at Microsoft. Phil promoted Matt Booty and now Darrell Gallagher. That´s all of the restructure you´ll get from Phil Spencer for now.

Phil had to clean somebody´s mess before he could come up with his vision for Xbox. The Kinect is gone, tv tv tv, always online and DRM are gone.

With the S and X out in the wild, now Xbox One is all about Phil Spencer vision. And will be that way for the forseable future.

DarkVoyager2194d ago (Edited 2194d ago )

@Obscure_Observer

“Phil had to clean somebody´s mess before he could come up with his vision for Xbox. The Kinect is gone, tv tv tv, always online and DRM are gone.”

Somebody else’s mess? As if Phil’s done any better.

I didn’t see a lack of exclusives, studios being closed, games being cancelled, and behind over 30 million in sales when Mattrick was in charge.

Obscure_Observer2194d ago

@DarkVoyager

"I didn’t see a lack of exclusives, studios being closed, games being cancelled, and behind over 30 million in sales when Mattrick was in charge."

Yeah, you can blame Phil for that. But i rather have Phil as Xbox Boss over Mattrick any day.

Facts speaks by itself. We got Phil promoted to VP while Mattrick is nowhere to be found in gaming industry.

Like i said; Xbox One is all about Phil Spencer vision. And will be that way for the forseable future. Embrace it or leave it. Is that simple. ;)

2193d ago
rainslacker2193d ago (Edited 2193d ago )

Cleaning up someone elses mess which was pretty much cleaned up before Mattrick left. They removed all the things that people didn't like under Mattricks reign. The only mess to clean up was in terms of reputation.

Since Spencer took over, they have however, released almost all the games that started under Mattrick, outside the couple they cancelled. Since Spencer took over, I am hard pressed to think of any major AAA title that started under his reign outside the yearly Forza. But I guess we'll hear about those closer to release if you want to believe they aren't announcing stuff too early because that's what everyone wanted....even though no one really cares about that either way.

The only mess Spencer had to clean up was the terrible PR that tarnished MS reputation. It shouldn't have had any impact on MS actual game output. So, the only logical explanations are that Phil is doing a terrible job, or MS did not allow him to do anything with their own first party studios for 3-4 years.

While I really wouldn't want Mattrick back because of his apparent vision, I'm questioning now if that vision was his, or one passed down from MS itself. And it makes me wonder if Phil is just as ineffectual in producing more high profile games because MS just doesn't care anymore. All I can say is that at least under Mattrick, he was getting meaningful games produced. Given that SoT and CD3(with it's cloud tech), Ryse, SSoD, QB, Recore, Ori, etc, all started under him, I'd rather have him back doing that than Spencer with his lackluster 1st/2nd party output which shows almost no signs of improvement in the near future beyond vague promises which are impossible to take seriously since all he can do is make promises.

Phil got promoted because he's doing something that MS wants. Something in MS vision. Given that MS vision for Xbox is to become a service, and not a game producer, I'd say that Spencer is probably worse than Mattrick if all the customer wants is a game console with meaningful 1st/2nd party support.

Obscure_Observer2193d ago (Edited 2193d ago )

@rainslacker

"Cleaning up someone elses mess which was pretty much cleaned up before Mattrick left. They removed all the things that people didn't like under Mattricks reign. The only mess to clean up was in terms of reputation."

They don´t removed the Kinect and the home entertainment system essence was still there. The damage was done! Xbox One was pretty much DEAD!

Phil Spencer was promoted as Head of Xbox on March 31 2014. On May 5 of the same year, Bill Gates goes public supporting Microsoft to selling off its Xbox division! That pretty much CONFIRMS that, to Microsoft, despite Phil Spencer took over the helm of Xbox Boss for less than 2 months, Xbox division for the higher ups were pretty much DEAD!

So yeah, Nadella and Spencer pretty much SAVED the Xbox and Microsoft gaming division as we know it today!

"Phil got promoted because he's doing something that MS wants. Something in MS vision. Given that MS vision for Xbox is to become a service, and not a game producer, I'd say that Spencer is probably worse than Mattrick if all the customer wants is a game console with meaningful 1st/2nd party support."

"Phil got promoted because he's doing something that MS wants."

Isn´t that obvious? Microsoft is a bussiness first and foremost. All Phil Spencer did was manage to CONVINCE Microsoft that to invest in gaming is worth it!

Play Anywhere - Success
Removal of Kinect - Success
Consistent Support and Updates - Success
Windows 10 Store and Apps compatibility between platforms - Success
Allowing third party services like EA Access - Success
Backwards compatibility - Success
Crossplay - Success
Game Preview (Early Access) - Success
Game Pass - Success
Xbox One S - Success
Xbox One X - Success

All those achievements are part the "something" which helped Phil Spencer made it to to the top!

The fact that Phil Spencer is quiet about new first party games doesn´t mean its not comming or Phil is lying playing coy about it. I belive great bigger AAA games announcements are comming this E3. You don´t belive him? Good! Move on! Phil Spencer is here for the long route.

r2oB2193d ago

@ observer

How are you gauging success? Most of what you listed hasn't translated into boosting console and software sales (at least not by any substantial amount). And most importantly, it hasn't translated into boosting games out put. Their reputation has benefited greatly, I'll give you that, but then I can't play their reputation on my Xbox One. So again, how are you measuring success? Just curious.

welly3002193d ago

Dont laugh but i enjoyed kinect that with a vr unit would have been great. I agree it should never have been bundled at the start.

@ Darth

Even with RRoD PS3 still sold at a faster rate with aligned launches.

XO on the other hand is falling further and further behind 360 in the same timespan.

Idk how you could even compare these situations.

MasterCornholio2193d ago (Edited 2193d ago )

Didn't Kinect help sell a lot of Xbox 360s? That could explain why the Xbox 360 is ahead at around the same time.

DarkVoyager2193d ago (Edited 2193d ago )

“Didn't Kinect help sell a lot of Xbox 360s? That could explain why the Xbox 360 is ahead at around the same time.“

Kinect hadn’t even gone on sale yet during the time frame in the comparison.

Godmars2902193d ago

Only here they are, well into the tail end of the XB1's cycle. Nothing is going to "turn around" until the next console.

AmstradAmiga2193d ago

Agreed. A company is only as good as its current gen console. MS has a lot of takeaways they can learn from so let's see if they can.

I will also be interested to see what Sony does next gen with VR.

StormSnooper2193d ago

But we knew that. Xbox only makes hard hitting exclusives during the first half of each generation. It’s how they do it. I think they are already gearing up for next generation Xbox at this point.

Godmars2902193d ago

@StormSnooper:

"Xbox only makes hard hitting exclusives during the first half of each generation."

What?

No, really: What?

Seriously, really and honestly need you to think on this, what hard hitting exclusives have MS actually - directly - made? Outside of Halo - a project started before Xbox - Forza - maybe they actually did that, but then, ITS A RACING GAME - or Gears, a recently bought 3rd party IP.

MS's key issue is a seeming inability to produce IPs. Mishandling ones they've bought. So, what exclusives have they actually made?

DrumBeat2193d ago

Agreed on that dashboard. PS4's is much more intuitive. Everything you need is there without the need to page over. Everything's just faster and easier.

MorpheusX2193d ago

@DarkVoyager

I agree.

Some people want to give Phil Spencer credit, for what I'm not sure, imo Phil Spencer doesn't operate independentally, I imagine he answers to MS hire ups.

Even with Xbox One X out the gap continues to increase.

In fact during Xbox 360’s fifth year it got a slim model and Kinect, so the gap will dramatically increase even further

Obscure_Observer2194d ago

@PhoenixUp

Do you have the numbers to back up your claims? Since the X´s out Xbox One has seen consistent sales numbers.

From NPD:
https://i0.wp.com/www.thexb...

From Microsoft:
https://www.dualshockers.co...

PhoenixUp2193d ago

Do I have numbers? Are you incapable of reading this very article?

It makes it that much sadder that Xbox One sales are up YOY and yet overall sales are still falling further behind its predecessor which didn’t even have a slimline model release yet at this point in its lifecycle.

Obscure_Observer2193d ago

@PhoenixUp

"It makes it that much sadder that Xbox One sales are up YOY and yet overall sales are still falling further behind its predecessor which didn’t even have a slimline model release yet at this point in its lifecycle."

Well, because of Mattrick Xbox as division was supposed to be dead or sold by now if wasn´t for Satya Nadella and Phil Spencer.

Last month Xbox One was the second best selling console in US only behind PS4. Sea of Thieves was supposed to flop because it´s avaliable on PC, Game Pass and at the top of it some retailers simply boycott its retail copies. Happens that i just checked UK´s Top 10 Charts and Retail Sea of Thieves is still there on 6th spot. PUBG is 5th. So much for a digital future for Xbox.

Besides 2 millions difference is not that much. Xbox One could overtake the 360 in a year from now or so. It will really depend on how well Phil Spencer will manage bussines as VP from now on and what Microsoft has in store for Xbox One this E3.

PhoenixUp2193d ago

You’re comparing XO’s performance with its last year’s performance. This article isn’t even talking about that. It’s about directly comparing 360 and XO sales in the same timeframe

2.33 million is a huge difference. Let’s not forget that XO started selling way faster than 360 when it first launched, yet it started to lose steam and fall behind it. No way can this be damage controlled.

The fact that even with a slim model and premium model the XO is selling slower than its predecessor which didn’t have a boost from a slim model yet shows this trend isn’t changing. It’s futile to think it could.

FallenAngel19842193d ago

At this rate Xbox One would be lucky to sell as well as the NES.

DivineAssault 2193d ago

How did Phil get promoted? Now this other guy who makes timed exclusive deals comes in.. I see nothing but greed from that company.. When their games are more diverse ill consider buying again..

2193d ago
Bathyj2193d ago (Edited 2193d ago )

He wasn't Don Mattrick. That was his big selling point.

For all the crap Don got, he was the guy who made Xbox a profitable entity for the first time since it launched. People forget that. It was billions in the hole before him. Phil has done nothing but not be Don Mattrick and congratulate Sony on everything they're getting right. What a great guy.

They also blame Don for everything that was wrong with Xbox cos he ran it all but claim Phil is just a mouth piece and has no real power. I though that was Major Nelson. How many powerless mouth pieces does this company have?

rainslacker2193d ago

Because MS has a vision for the Xbox brand. They want to integrate it into the Windows brand, use it to accelerate the Live ecosystem, and promote the Windows Store, which is integral to how MS wants to succeed with Windows, because they see Google and Apple making bucketloads of money off that, instead of trying to make money off the OS sales, which have been waning for MS.

MS is promoting this through services, with Xbox itself becoming yet another service. The Xbox console itself is just becoming an outlet to that service. it'll still be a game console, but I think it's already apparent the kind of support that MS will continue giving it. Likely the same staple franchises until they stop selling, and GaaS, with very little high profile AAA production beyond that.

Spencer is on board with that, and inexplicably, he's managed to fool his customer base into believing that everything they're doing is great, when to anyone who really steps back and looks at it can see that the Xbox brand is changing beyond what they have come to know thus far.

Since Spencer has managed to do that, MS sees him as a productive member to try and steer that ship, thus gave him a promotion.

It has nothing to do with if the customer base will like where the Xbox brand ends up(which is going to be more like Windows except in a closed off environment which will be akin to Apple's way of doing things across the board).

Its a long road though. It'll be small steps with some big moves here or there. The small steps will go unnoticed by most, and eventually people will look back and wonder what the hell happened, and I'd imagine if streaming becomes more popular in 10-20 years, the Xbox console itself may not even be a thing anymore....if MS can manage to hold their place in the market for that long. One new big competitor in the market could actually do more damage to MS for the long term than Sony or Nintendo, because they'd likely take marketshare away from MS more than Sony or Nintendo would.

StormSnooper2193d ago (Edited 2193d ago )

Wow your comment blew my mind. I agree completely. Ufortunate for console gaming.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC3h ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Friendlygamer4h ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey6023h ago(Edited 3h ago)

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya2h ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde1h ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

Used to love this one, but X-Men Legends 1 and 2 will always be my favorites, especially Rise of Apocalypse. Would pay some good money to play it today with online multiplayer, back then I had no way to get a modem

RavenWolfx1h ago

Yeah, I loved the Legends games so much.

ZeekQuattro9h ago

I remember buying them dirt cheap on the PS4 and then a few days later I read they were delisted. I was wondering why the bundle was price so low and got my answer when that happened.

Knightofelemia7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Sad to say this is one game franchise next to the Xmen that needs a sequel. I use to play the hell out of Xmen Legends and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Was great when my cousin had the OG Xbox play with four other people and then playing online. Great games glad to see it reappear even though I own the discs love the mechanics of this game.

Terry_B7h ago

It got a sequel..but for dumbass #reasons as a switch exclusive.

shinoff21837h ago

It looked so horrible to. They should've kept it similar to the first two.

Asplundh6h ago

Because Nintendo funded it, they did the same for Bayonetta.

Knightofelemia6h ago

Misleading. This page is whats available for people who owned the game prior to delisting.

There's a reason they're called 'gods' and not 'regular people'. It's nice they've diversified even more but gods looking godly wasn't exactly a glaring issue with the first game.

Juancho5110h ago

Hey! Gods suffer from obesity and diabetes too!

Blastoise10h ago

This is the dumbest article I've read in a long time.

Michiel19899h ago

No one had an issue with that besides a very select group of people that try to push their own agenda.

Crows909h ago

Exactly. Not even sure they're necessarily committing to body diversity either.

The designs look fine not stupid.

gerbintosh1h ago

Tody_ZA8h ago

Thanks for bringing up a bunch of garbage thoughts that never crossed my mind when playing the first game because I was too busy playing the game to worry about the portrayal of the physical bodies of gods.

Foolish me, when I read the title I thought we were talking about game mechanics.

Piss off, honestly, with this asinine bottom of the barrel try-hard-to-be-relevant trash.
