Dragon Quest XI aims for Monster Hunter: World’s Western success

To the untrained eye, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age looks like ... any old Dragon Quest game. Square Enix sees it differently, of course. To the publisher, this latest entry in Japan’s reigning role-playing series will be the one to capture the West too.

The story is too old to be commented.

It'll need better advertising to hit that level. People gotta know its there.

Exactly, word of mouth can only go so far. A lot of newcomers may be put off by the XI designation, thinking that they would be lost not knowing anything about the previous 10 titles (not to mention all the spinoffs). It needs to be stressed that this is an entry that both newcomers and veterans will enjoy, and it needs to be featured often in more media. I don't think I've seen one TV commercial for it yet (not saying that there aren't any) and I watch my fair share of the boobtube.

@ raw

The numbering in the title didn’t stop Final Fantasy VII, Persona 5, Resident Evil 4 & The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim from achieving a newfound audience.

A game can still have mass appeal without being multi console (remember FF7?). It's more a matter of presence and content. I'm personally more interested in DQ than MH, which is why I haven't gotten MHW, but overall, the Co-op live action will more than likely have a larger base than a turn based RPG in this day and age. We'll see though. I loved DQ VIII.

I guess that's technically true, but it hardly matters 90% of all sales were on PS4.

DQ VIII was their last big push in the West. I loved the series since Dragon Warrior on the NES but I don't see DQXI changing anything especially in a very busy September. I could see the game being a casualty of war with so many big games coming out. Spider-Man PS4 for instance will be huge. Not since Spider-Man 2 on the PS2/GCN have I seen so much hype his games outside of my personal hype for a new Spider-Man entry whenever one is announced. September will be interesting regardless of the end result and I wish DQ 11 luck. Its going to need it.
