Far Cry 5 Controversy Highlights Why Devs Don't Tackle Politics

Far Cry 5 is not the game that many thought it was going to be. With its anti-government, gun-toting, religious cult and shift to a modern-day US setting, it seemed primed to tackle current-day issues — early gameplay footage suggested as much, with some dialogue playing off America's tense political climate.

It wasn’t a controversy, it was a fabricated narrative made by sites like polygon. And then a disappointed polygon penalizes the game because their fabricated narrative was exposed as a lie.

Devs are fully welcome to tackle anything they want to if they address their consumers directly. Don’t leave it up to sites like polygon to do your game justice. All they do is create “controversy”. Seriously, it’s all they are good for. The last few years of media coverage has been utterly useless.

killswitch802203d ago

The guy from Polygon down voted you

stokedAF2203d ago

Lol not to single them out, they weren’t the only ones. It’s just the first example that came to my head.

Leeroyw2203d ago

Everyone is dumb and racist and xenophobic except us here at Polygon.

I'm Sooooo glad fc5 did well. It's a great game, told well that makes fun of everybody.
Some people can't handle that.

1nsomniac2205d ago (Edited 2205d ago )

...but it sold series record high numbers & is also the series highest critical success.

Bottom line folks, media controversy is bullshit & a tool used to create hype & beliefs. Just play the game folks. If you like it, you like it. If you don’t, you don’t. Simples.

Christopher2203d ago

We have a modern day issue with cults taking over cities and mass killing people in the U.S.?

stokedAF2203d ago (Edited 2203d ago )

Yes lol. Cults taking over cities, check. Mass killings, sure.

Christopher2203d ago (Edited 2203d ago )

What cults are taking over cities? Does that mean the Midwest is all a cult as well? Do you make the same mistakes as this article as conflating an imaginary cult with ideologies that have always been prevalent in politics?

InTheZoneAC2203d ago (Edited 2203d ago )

technically the news media and social media would be a cult as they are the ones shaping the minds and opinions of sheep by being selective with their racist, anti-police, anti-white male propaganda, while also promoting terrorist acts whether it's a school shooting or riots by blm and the likes...

Christopher2203d ago (Edited 2203d ago )

"a system of religious veneration and devotion directed toward a particular figure or object."

Edit: promoting terrorist acts such as school shootings? That's like acting like the biggest fanboy is the normal gamer.

stokedAF2203d ago

It varies in both and all sides. Cult of personality applies to both Obama and Trump. Our representative republic fails on both and all sides in DC. The ruling class, the establishment, the swamp, whatever you call it. Certain ideologies have taken over entertainment, academia and politics. Some ideologies are more faith based then others. Cult is a loose term but it applies.

I was not comparing the cult in far cry 5 to any particular ideology I was just saying those things exist in modern America in modern ways. And that those who practice critical theory are more cult like or religious based opposed to somebody who believes in facts and math.

The cult is more like the mixture of the Manson family and the Jonestown massacre. The term “drinking the kool-aid” comes from a real scenario in American history and it applies today in my opinion. Not to that extreme obviously but it is apparent in leadership and the common level. The Democratic Party votes like boot clickers. The federal, state and local voting statistics are cult like to me. They are one for all, that’s for sure. Party before self.

Christopher2203d ago

Cult and cult of personality are two completely different things.

stokedAF2203d ago (Edited 2203d ago )

Completely? How so when voting and education are involved? Entertainment isn’t as important but that doesn’t make me care any less about it.

Christopher2203d ago (Edited 2203d ago )

Cult is religious.

Cult of personality is political.

The cult in the game is merely religious. It holds no political ideals at all. They have no desire to grow, only to maintain what they "know to be true" where they are and prevent outside influence.

stokedAF2203d ago

I don’t know if you have played it or not so I don’t want to spoil it but there is a plan for expansion and consequences of possible global proportions.

You are right but what is a religion? Total belief in a collective vision, right? Faith over fact. An explanation for the laws of nature. An attempt to “cull the herd”. These things can’t be political? They have been political forever really lol.

Far cry 5s cult was political at first. It had to be to take over. By the time the game starts it’s no longer political as there is no longer a choice. You join or you die.

Modern politics are a lot like how it started. Special interests across the spectrum determining what is and isn’t acceptable with a religious tenacity only rivaled with the Christian Right of the 90s.

I for one, am glad that they didn't go political with this game. Hollywood is biased enough, we don't need the gaming industry to become consumed by one political left leaning ideology. I was waiting to see what the narrative of the game would actually be, and it turns out that the game is yet another fantastic game in the series. Looks like I'm going to be purchasing this game soon :)

zombiewombie2203d ago

It was never political to begin with. The cult is based off of the Waco cult and the leader is even wearing similar glasses as the Waco cult.

Played and enjoyed Far Cry, Far Cry 3 and 4 campaigns .

-Foxtrot39d ago

4 wasn’t so bad

Pagan Min was pretty entertaining

Skuletor39d ago

Yeah, 4 was good, was hard choosing which Golden Dawn member to side with, when they were both pieces of sh!t.
I've beaten all the main entries except 2 and 6, ended up uninstalling 6 to download something else instead.

Profchaos39d ago

I'd love a far cry pack with the original PC game (not the half assed port on ps360) instincts, predator even a port of far cry 2 to modern consoles back when these games had their own identity and weren't far cry 3 cut and pastel

Demetrius39d ago

Still one of my most favorite franchises along with assassins creed

banger8839d ago (Edited 39d ago )

Same here, I don't know why these games get so much hate. I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them, with only a couple of exceptions. I wish they'd hurry up and announce Far Cry 7. The only thing I'm concerned about is the rumoured time limit.

When you're free on every single service it's eventually going to happen.

Profchaos390d ago

Part of PS plus at the moment

ChasterMies390d ago

Far Cry 5 is “free” if you pay for PS+ Extra.

gangsta_red390d ago

Going to have to try and get back into Far Cry. The formula for Far Cry may be fun, but it gets repetitive very fast.

Demetrius389d ago

Been playing this series since far cry 3 I love the adventuring vibe this series gives off even far cry primal is so good, but experiencing far cry 5 in 60 fps crisp graphics on ps5 for the first time is dope it adds life to it, I wana give far cry 6 a second chance couldn’t get into it at first I wonder if it’s worth it

Damn. I replayed it recently on SX with fps boost, and to achieve that they had to downgrade the resolution. Game played great but looked like ass. Wish I had've waited.

blackblades403d ago (Edited 403d ago )

So you saying fps boost lowers the resolution to achieve 60fps? Cause that culteastwitch was praising in a fanboy cok suking way.

Darkwatchman403d ago

It depends on the game. Some keep Xbox One X resolution. Others drop to base Xbox One resolution and settings.

Knushwood Butt403d ago

Nice
Waiting to play this on Extra but have had too much else to play.
So is this a native PS5 version or does the PS4 version run at 60fps on PS5?

Jin_Sakai403d ago

As expected, Far Cry 5 will now run at 60 frames-per-second on PS5,

“as part of a patch that optimises the PS4 game on Sony's new-gen console.”

Knushwood Butt403d ago

Downloading now. I might do a bit of pancake gaming this weekend.

Eidolon403d ago

Not native PS5. But still looked pretty good on PS4 Pro, and at a solid 60fps, definitely a good experience. Sadly games can't break out of PS4 Pro resolutions, for some reason.

LucasRuinedChildhood402d ago

PS4 games can run 2-2.5 times better on PS5. They're basically just changing the framerate cap to take advantage of that. They could actually change the resolution but it might affect the framerate - it's not a native PS5 game so it can't properly take advantage of the hardware. 1620p isn't bad, tbh.

Eidolon403d ago

Was really hoping to read that New Dawn would be upgraded as well. :( Already beat Far Cry 5 + and only like 1 hr into New Dawn.

KeeseToast403d ago (Edited 403d ago )

Pretty nice 👍
Now we’ll only need fps boost for:
Arkham Knight
Bloodborne
The Last Guardian
Assassin‘s Creed Unity
Shadow of the Colossus
Gravity Rush 2

Did I forget something?

Welshy403d ago

The worst part about AC Unity is that it *does* run natively at 60fps, but only when running the 1.0 version from the disc. If you allow the game to update, future patches applied a 30fps cap for some reason.

I don't see any reason it would be difficult to just lift the cap that they added.

CML2403d ago

Shadow of the Colossus already runs at 60fps.
Its possible to play The Last Guardian at 60fps with an unpatched disc version too.

Stanjara403d ago

So why not unlock framerate cap on the latest version? Can't be that hard.

CML2402d ago

Probably because the studio doesnt exist anymore. 🥲

LucasRuinedChildhood402d ago (Edited 402d ago )

Absolutely. RDR2 still sells very well so the lack of a next gen version after GTA5 next gen is really annoying.
