"Brett and I sit and chat about Sea of Thieves’ rocky beginning and fan reactions. We both agree that the game is a bit bare right now, but we also envision a bright future for the open world pirate title." -- PC Gaming Enthusiast
Opinion: Why Helldivers 2 and Sea of Thieves, despite their obvious differences, are very much the same for PlayStation and Xbox
Sea of Thieves stared off life as an Xbox exclusive, growing over time into a genuine hit with a large, committed community. Now, in an effort to increase its audience still futher, it's become a key part of Microsoft's multi-platform push.
So, no one wants to talk about how the PS5 outperforms the xbox version in multiple ways, huh?
Draw distance better / shadows better
Also he calls most ps5 “oddity’s” and uses the term “not sure why this is happening” a lot
Ps5 is just more powerful, those 2teraflop difference and Xbox fanatics saying world most powerful console, is worth zip- zero
Joe 'Three Sheets' Neate (Executive Producer): "As I’m sure you can imagine, when it comes to Sea of Thieves my days are full of numbers. Development costs, active servers, days until the next update… Sometimes, though, a truly extraordinary number stands out – a number like 40 million, which I’m incredibly pleased to say is the number of pirates who’ve now set sail in Sea of Thieves!"
Garrr... more people to walk the plank and send to Davey Jones locker.
would have been funny to release this on talk like a pirate day.
40 million have set sail...that's great. How many are sailing now? Monthly active users....when it actually matters. How many people purchased the game is another important number.
40 Mil across Stream, Windows 10, and Xbox. Healthy numbers for sure, but when PC is the biggest platform, I expected more. It’ll be interesting to see how it does on PlayStation. Very well could be double that player count in 6 months with PS too. It’s crazy for developers to skip the most popular platform, not sure why they’d want to, but they must have had their rea$ons.
Well there is A LOT of potential with the title but a bright future isn't necessarily guaranteed. The content that this game desperately needs, needs to (1) be meaningful and good content and (2) come ASAP.
If the content isn't forthcoming soon then you're going to get a lot of people moving away from the title as they become bored with it. Its probably happening now anyway.
Rare really should have been aware of this. I do find it surprising that they thought that the game could rely so heavily on its social aspect to carry the game through. I mean, it does work very well but it doesnt take a genius to figure out that, that wasn't going to be enough in the end.
If I were Rare, I would be revealing a very clear roadmap for content coming in the future, and fast.
Not a single big-budget new IP on Xbox One has been revisited because they all flop.
Sea of Thieves is not really any different. Yeah, it outsold the previous best-selling, chart-topping new IP on XB1 (Quantum Break), yet that was a certified flop, so what Microsoft gauges as "success" really depends on how much this game sells versus its budget and it's not exactly like their standards are high. They're clearly not making their money back after paying 200 staff members to make this game over the course of 4 years.
It's a pretty bad game that might become alright at some point with additional content, but not at the rate which is salvageable. 4 years to make what is on the table right now, and 2 years to make a single ship. I understand the excuses out of Rare and its defenders are that they didn't create the game to have progression systems and that people are expected to make their own adventures - so do they now believe they can support the game with meaningful content meant to last players for months at a time if this isn't even their design philosophy for the game? Cause without any of that, the game is doomed to fail in the long term.
Rare doesn't seem dedicated to reassuring people with any kind of content roadmap, and probably won't announce anything to appease people until E3 which is pretty bad at this point in the generation for a AAA first-party game that was anticipated for around 3 years. The good will really has worn thin when it comes to Microsoft first-party aside from staples like Forza Horizon.
