Edge writes: "EA chief John Riccitiello says the recent Spore / DRM / SecureROM controversy was blown out of proportion by a minority of activists.

But speaking at the Dow Jones/Nielsen Media and Money Conference he admitted that DRM is intrusive, blaming piracy for the intrusion into the user experience."

I realy cant see why they put DRM in games anyway. Spore was cracked within 2 days and many games are cracked the day its released. Theyre fooling themselves when they think DRM cuts down on Piracy. Even Xbox 360 games are easily downloaded. Ive seen Dead Space for Xbox 360 on a torrent site already.

I could almost guarantee if they removed DRM in games and reduced the price of what they pay for the DRM licence for each copy that games sales would raise. Also when he says the minority of activists he is also kidding himself. The uproar was massive. They wont make an uncrackable DRM in a hurry.

... but let him keep thinking that way, and the gamer swill keep resorting to piracy to side-step the DRM-issue.

Piracy isnt to blame. It's GREED that is to blame. EA and Sony and music-producers etc etc deciding that when you buy a game, or a song, or a movie, that you dont actually OWN it, but that you can only install it a limited amount of times, or only on a certain product, or only watch it a certain amount of times, etc.

It's basically 'renting', at the cost of 'buying'. It's not strange that people will resort to piracy.

how'd sony get thrown into this? BMG?

steve30x3660d ago

Sony came into it because of their DRM also (I think they originally introduced DRM but I could be wrong)

I also agree that they put DRM in the games because of greed. For instance the music companies suing for downloading musci because they have MULTI Milionaires to protect. Us mere non milionaires arent worthy of their music. Just like us unemployed people should pay to protect the people who make 3 - 5 x more money than we see in a year.

Yeah it was a minority that started Spore's DRM headaches. I guess that's why it's become the most pirated game ever released. 500,000 downloads in the first day or something like that.
