Barlog: God of War Is An Onramp for Everyone; The Last of Us Is The Gold Standard

God of War Game Director Cory Barlog explained that the game doesn't have any subtitles so that it can be an 'onramp' for everyone, including those who haven't played previous games. He then cited Naughty Dog and The Last of Us in particular as influences and 'the gold standard' in gaming.

Its true. Naughty Dog is the gold standard in gaming.

Christopher92d ago

Not "in gaming" but in the type of games they make, perhaps. They are not a gold standard in general, though. I'd rather play a single Dishonored than ten TLoU, personally. That's how opinions and 'standards' work anyway.

mkis00792d ago

How many teams do you just expect to win Goty awards whenever they release a game? Thats a gold standard.

Mr-Dude92d ago

@Christopher

I like to play them both. I loved Dishonored series and TLOU. It is good that we have those choices in singleplayer games with diversity in gameplay, story etc. And I really hate those gaas crap games..

Singleplayer games ftw!

_-EDMIX-_92d ago

Christopher -the quality of naughty dog's games is so high it's difficult to say it would be seen as the standard it would be like trying to say Martin Scorsese is a standard.

This is a development team that is so far ahead of every other development team that it would be impossible to ask every team to meet up to their quality of standard.

It would be like asking directors to meet up with Francis Ford Coppola as if that type of perfection is normal.

Christopher

Of course Naughty Dog is a gold standard in gaming. They have been the standard since 2007.

From 2009-2016 they had 3 games that were the consensus Game of the Year. - U2, TLoU, U4

In a 10 year span they released 6 great games, not including the remasters. - U1, U2, U3, TLoU, U4, Lost Legacy

Not only do they put out award winning games but they do it fast. No other developer has put out as much high quality content over the past decade.

Look at their whole career even. Crash, Jak, Uncharted, TLoU. 4 hit franchises from a 200 man team. This isn't a thousand man conglomerate like R*, Naughty Dog is a real development team and right now they ARE the standard like it or not.

Christopher92d ago

***Christopher -the quality of naughty dog's games is so high it's difficult to say it would be seen as the standard it would be like trying to say Martin Scorsese is a standard. ***

There's a difference here. You called Scorsese "a standard" and the person I replied to said "the gold standard in gaming." Those are completely different. In cinema, Scorsese stands alongside many others. That's my point. ND is a standard, but not 'the' standard. And what people consider 'the' standard often varies due to opinion.

Nintendo is a standard. R* is a standard. Santa Monica is a standard. Kojima is a standard. Etc.

AspiringProGenji92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

@Captain

It is not ND’a fault that you finish their game and shelve them. I played TLoU and Uncharted a lot in their respective MP modes after the main story. To say they have no replay is nothing but bollocks

rainslacker92d ago

Maybe others are the silver standard. Gold standard indicates that it's at the pinnacle of all that it represents. Other games not matching the same quality indicates that it is above the rest, thus of the highest standard.

Doesn't mean that one has to enjoy their games, just that those games can be looked at as a standard to live up to.

It's all subjective though, but it's hard to deny ND technical expertise.

UCForce92d ago

@Deep-throat Is that a bad thing ? Because I really like it. After all, The Last of Us is my GOTY.

Atticus_finch92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

Gold standard indeed. Tlou is the best story I ever experienced and had the best multiplayer I ever played. Naughty dog are good tier.

Imalwaysright92d ago

rainslacker

And what exactly is it representing? Action adventure games since that's what they've been since last gen started?

92d ago
UCForce92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

@imalwaysright Everyone have opinions of course, but The Last of Us won over 200 awards which show the game have made huge impact to gaming industry and gaming community as a whole whatever you like it or not.

Imalwaysright92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

UCForce

Witcher 3 won more. Could ND make an open world RPG as ambitious as The Witcher 3 and still have the same level of quality they displayed with TloU or the same level of quality as The Witcher 3 which is for many the best RPG ever made? I don't know because as far as I'm aware, they never did a game as ambitious and they never made a RPG. On the other hand could CD red make an action adventure game with the same level of quality as TloU? I don't know because they never made one.

What I do know is that there are studios that excel at particular genres. ND bread and butter are cinematic action adventure games but gaming doesn't start and ends with that genre or with RPGs or any other genre but I have to say that I very much would like to see ND putting their cinematic storytelling skills in a RPG.

IamTylerDurden192d ago (Edited 92d ago )

Christopher

Let's not mince words here, Naughty Dog over the past 10 years has been the best developer in the industry. I'm talking actual development team. No 200 man team has come close.

Ceaser985736192d ago (Edited 92d ago )

It so funny to see how some section are trying to downplay LOU, GOW when its receiving praises and more praises.. I hope the same could be said for SOT but.. Anyways Cant wait for GOW that game gonna be a Masterpiece and more excited to learn that GOW prolly is the only game done in a single continues shot. Please feel free to correct me if i am wrong. But thats what i am hearing from IGN, Kotaku, Poly etc.

RememberThe35791d ago

Jesus people you're not being intellectual by saying "everything's subjective." Of course it is! That's perception! We're talking most people's opinions, and most opinions fall with Corey on this one.

Realms91d ago

@ Christopher

They are leaders among the industry in terms of pushing the limits of the medium that is why IMO he states they are the standard. You don't have to like ND games to understand that they are in fact pushing the medium forward wether it is through story telling, graphical immersion, or technical progression. I would put Rockstar, CD project red in that same category but he isn't wrong only a hand full of studios are doing that.

Naughty Dog and Sony Santa Monica are two of the best developers in the industry, it's amazing to have them under the same roof.

Now with Guerrilla Games hitting their stride with HZD Sony has a mean threesome in their stable. I wonder if Sucker Punch ascend in a similar fashion due to Ghost of Tsushima?

_-EDMIX-_92d ago

Completely agreed Sony is building a huge arsenal of just massive Studios.

What happens going forward with Sony Bend? What about Kojima Productions? Juggernauts

Atticus_finch92d ago

Sony's first party is unmatched but so is their 2nd and 3rd party as well.

Ceaser985736191d ago (Edited 91d ago )

Also you guys have read recently that Sony have reshuffled their Playstation department and their 1st priorities are now First Party games , they gonna invest on them more and make them much better and raising the bar from one another... That being said I want GOW to raise the bar that means top HZD UC4 and then i Want LOU 2 Spiderman Days Gone Detroit to do better... Also according to DF GOW image looks sharper than HZD and also called its on of the cleanest game on the Platform ..

"The Last of Us Is The Gold Standard"

I think many of us know that... Loving that this new direction is taking a few things away from that game.

Imp0ssibl392d ago

Me too, as long as it's different enough.

madforaday91d ago

Just add Kratos and you will get a different experience no matter what in terms of story and character development.

I'm glad I can get in without playing others. We skipped Ascension for good reason.

AspiringProGenji92d ago

We? I didn’t! It was pretty good personally but I understand the criticism it got

Christopher92d ago

Hey, if Sessler needs help playing a game, it can't be any good. /s

Rude-ro92d ago (Edited 92d ago )

It was at the end of the ps3 era when Sony had tons of exclusives and the competition did not. Ascension and sly cooper got way downplayed by reviews.
Both were awesome games.

OffRoadKing92d ago

Who is this "we" you're referring to?

SickSinceSix92d ago

Then you missed out on it's multiplayer mode, which was surprisingly fun.

Avengerz4392d ago

Loved them all definitely one of my favorite franchises. I liked TLoU better than any individual GoW game to this point. But I like the GoW franchise better than TLoU as a franchise even with just one out and the 2nd on the way. I'm spending way too much $$$ on just this GoW game, the limited edition version of the game and the limited edition PS4 pro.
