Nintendo Switch's success shows that gaming is about more than graphics

For a long time, Nintendo hasn't been a gaming company that touts the latest and greatest technology to sell its hardware. While Sony and Microsoft vie for the 4K crown with the powerful PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, for example, Nintendo has announced a DIY cardboard accessory for the Nintendo Switch that makes use of motion sensors and infrared.

s a somewhat risky approach that doesn’t always work – just look at the tragedy that was the Wii U – but when Nintendo gets the recipe right, you can be guaranteed of something pretty special. After one year of success with the Switch, it would appear that this is one of those times Nintendo’s calculated risk has paid off.

I thought this was proved before with 3DS vs Vita. And Wii vs PS3/Xbox360. And DS vs PSP. And PS2 vs Xbox/GameCube. And Gameboy vs GameGear.

You would think this argument would be over, but nope. Insecure fans who want to belittle other systems will not let it go.

Miss_Vixen2234d ago (Edited 2234d ago )

It's mainly the PC crowd who's mostly vocal about the graphics talk. Every single article whether on here, Youtube, or the notorious WCCFtech. Even when it's a console exclusive game or console related article/news. You would see these crowd going into them commenting/trolling/belittling others just because it's not on their platform. Saying things like " console is holding back gaming, console is dead, console are for the poor/peasant/kids..etc

And for some reason they always feel the need to brag to justify their hardware specs on what it can run and do. If that wasn't bad enough, they even argue among themseleves with the never ending debate of Intel Vs AMD or Nvidia Vs AMD...

No you must say that this is the first time so that way the author has an argument to argue over..../s

SuperSonic912234d ago

Edmix do you remember many gamers saying the nickname "IndieStation 4" during PS4's first E3? Look at how that turned out.

_-EDMIX-_2234d ago

@super- I know right. The lolz

chris2352234d ago

by the way... gaming is also more than indie ports with a few watered down aaa titles thrown in plus a very stale nintendo games formula.

DanteVFenris6662234d ago (Edited 2234d ago )

You do realize all ninetendo franchises tend to be nowhere near the same formula. Even Mario has a vastly different design between games let alone all other Nintendo games.

Indies > western publishers as far as I’m concerned at this point

Obviously Sony is getting all the great Japanese third parties which are great. For example I am loving persona 5 at the moment but I have not bought an ea, Acti or ubi game in years. To many good games including indies to want to go back to that garbage

Prince_TFK2234d ago (Edited 2234d ago )

Yeah that is why we have Mario Odyssey and BOTW to change the “stale” formula, and that is why we will have games like Wolfenstein appearing on the Switch.

And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t people like you praised about how many indies games are available on the PS Vita? Or is that a bad thing now since indies are on the Switch?

Don't fool yourself Nintendo systematically released the handheld alongside a new Zelda with CERO games to back it up, the Nintendo brand and the new Zelda cause that thing to sell a lot and make a huge fuzz, if it wasn't for Zelda that thing would it be DOA!, down the road the following months were pure droplets of re-releases of the Wii U and hell! Nintendo did a terrific job re-advertising them as the big thing and making people to forget those are just damn re-releases of old games, then Mario arrives and the fad continues, this year is a different story Switch line up is bleak as hell and still over-expensive, gaming journalist Nintendo fan boys want to persist that Switch is the big thing by mentioning "oh is so hot", "year later still so great", "Nintendo Success", blah blah blah, but were are the new games? , were are the new IPs?, were are the triple A games?, yes you guessed it !, there are none, and there none because of that thing low specs, sorry but those are facts.

Nintendo is just one little rascal that likes to do money by creating/selling cheap stuff like the Switch, they still have lots of cash in their bags for screw ups and they will likely keep making cheap things until one of those cheap things hit a weak nerve in peoples mind and start selling, in this case the Switch sadly.

DanteVFenris6662234d ago

New ips....

Like arms?

Just to let you know Sony hasn’t released a new ip this year yet either...

Your a fanboy learn to correct that behaviour. It’s lame. I enjoy games. Nintendo and Sony are doing fantastic so I am a very happy gamer

You're like a butthurt little child who is trying so hard to hate on something (Nintendo) just to make themselves feel better about something else (Sony). Seriously, you're on most Nintendo articles just hating and not saying anything constructive. You even say that stuff on articles that aren't about Nintendo!

Since you hate it so much, why don't you grow up and just avoid these articles? It's not that hard.

NoPeace_Walker2234d ago (Edited 2234d ago )

I buy Nintendo systems gor Nintendo AAA games anyways (just like the majority of the system owners) so power is not a big concern for the majority of games I'll buy each year. My Xbox One X is my goto system when I need power for the majority of games I'll buy this year.

The Switch is a nice alternative for the Nintendo Blockbusters and some portable play away from my 4K TV.

It's a vast ecosystem (gaming).... personally being wowed by the graphics makes it fun for me. Always has. Resolution wars needs to stop and push the realism. What a conundrum.

michellelynn09762234d ago

Graphics are fun, no doubt, bit it means nothing compared to great games. Something the PS4 and Switch have a lot of.
