Why do Systems Fail?

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "Over the past few months we have examined several past video game systems that for, various reasons, did not light the world on fire and tried to imagine a world where these systems had actually taken off and been huge hits (you can find the full selection of articles here). But while this series, and doing research for each installment I started to notice patterns among the eight selected platforms, even though many were separated by decades, which got me to thinking, why do systems fail? Sure every platform has its own story and unique set of challenges to overcome but what are the common threads that ties these systems together? What is it exactly that makes systems fail?"
