Is this real life? Is this just fantasy?
Depends on the game really and what's it's setting out to do. RPGs have their history intertwined with fantasy, dragons and valkyrie breasts but there's room for a lot of variation. Can't set a general rule on that.
No. Western RPG can but Japanese No. Look at Final Fantasy. FF1-14 all stayed away from being too realistic Then we have FFXV too realistic and the least Fantasy of them all.
I don't actually think this is even a real yes or no question because it is something that varies and is up to developer discretion. I don't really believe Final Fantasy 15 was really all that realistic I would argue it's just as a fantasy as the previous ones because you're not really talking about the first Final Fantasy with a car or a road or anything like that, I don't really know if there's anything in Final Fantasy 15 that is technically not been done any previous Final Fantasy. I don't even know what too realistic means. What exactly do you specifically mean in terms of feature? Because I don't know if having powers and Dragons and people flying and a bunch of monsters is realistic 😂😂😂 Also this has nothing to do with Japanese RPG or Western RPGs because technically speaking you could still have a realistic Japanese RPG that does not have deep-rooted fantasy element. I mean even that is technically happenchance because it's simply saying we have not received too many Japanese RPGs that have been 100% modern and realistic like you might have seen from Kingdom. Keep in mind again that is simply saying it has not happened yet not that it can't happen or shouldn't happen I'm all for variety. Overall I think a game should be whatever a developer wants it to be I think maybe you guys read too deeply into these statements....
Why the hell would it matter whether its a Western or Japanese game? You mentioned ONE RPG, Final Fantasy. A game that is very obviously based in fantasy. You mean to tell me that if a Japanese developer wanted to make a realistic RPG, they shouldn't be allowed? Lol It just depends on what the developer wants the game to be. Doesn't matter what part of the world its made in.
I like Western RPGs better. JRPGs are a dime a dozen. Anime characters, mechs... weird story that I won't get and names I won't be able to pronounce because I'm ignorant of Japanese culture.
Because that how Western developers are making RPG. They don't try to make any RPG like Final Fantasy or Pokemon or Shin Megami Tensei or Tales of or Dragon Quest or Xeno series or Chrono Trigger and so on. It all the same sci-fi,apocalypse, high fantasy or medieval setting. All the same dialogue choice, create your characters and not much thought put into making the combat the best part of the experience.
Agreed. Over all this is just a dumb article. Want to know what Developers should be making? What ever they want, next. @DJ- "Because that how Western developers are making RPG" No, that is how SOME are making RPG. That doesn't matter, west, east etc. You are talking about happenchance, not rule exist that states the east can't make a realistic RPG. Shenmue and Yakuza are 2 jrpgs that very much are based on realistic, modern settings. No magic, no wizards, no dragons etc. HOW a game is made is UP TO THE DEVELOPER, NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE FROM, you need to seriously stop arguing over happenchance (ie the way it currently is) that doesn't mean they can't, shouldn't, won't etc. That just means few from certain regions do. Thats it.
These damn dumb question articles, obviously it depends on the game
I never understand these articles. If a developer wants to make an RPG that's realistic I think that's really cool but I don't understand these bizarre generalizations like "should RPGs be realistic" I mean is the author not understanding that that is up to the interpretation and discretion of the designer and developer? So should RPGs be more realistic? Well I don't know but that is up to the developer, is somebody seriously asking if I developers allowed to create something they want or? So to be frank I believe RPGs should be whatever the developer wants it to be I think that maybe this article needs to word itself better or have a more specific thing it's asking as opposed to a very very strange generalization. So there isn't a should or shouldn't because there is no right or wrong way you're talking about something that is subjective and varies by nature.
It depends on what you are trying to do with your game. Personally, I like high fantasy like Elder Scrolls, The Witcher or Final Fantasy.
There is no *should*. RPGs can be many different things.
THANK YOU! I don't get why anyone would say something like this, be like "should" lol Or. or...they should be what ever the developer wants them to be
For me RPG needs to have magic, monsters, tales etc that’s way the Witcher is so good. I don’t need more..
No. It takes away the fun
Is there a need for a blanket requirement one way or the other? Some will. Some won't. This is like asking "should FPSs focus more on laser guns". It's a subjective genre preference. As for KC:D, I think it's fantastic. But not all RPGs need to be like this.
Yeah like if the best selling JRPG "Pokemon" is in anyway realistic, or most popular RPG as Final Fantsy is realstic, or the most favorable RPG this gen The Witcher 3 and Perosna 5 is realstic!! Go find another genre to be realstic not RPG. The only realstic RPG I can think of now is HZD.
IMO, it really depends on what exactly you mean by «realism» and how fun that «realism» is/implemented within a game. For instance, i would love to play RPG with «realistic» characters, meaning characters that interact with you and each other, act like human beings, have their own opinions, ideas, ideals, they can interact with each other, hate/love/help/screw with each other. But i would not enjoy a game, where you must wake up, wash yourself, prepare food and slowly eat it, drive to work, perform said work, then take a pee break (or smoke break) and so on, each day, every day. I already have enough of such «realism».
Caught in a landslide? Or, escape from reality? OT: My personal opinion is that games are fantasy, so why not just add some fantasy in there. I, myself wouldn't make a medieval game with magic, monsters, and maybe dragons.
If they had less menu bullshit i may play one.
Everyone has different opinions. I like all types of RPGs and personally I think it will get boring really fast if all RPGs were "realistic".
I dont think games in any genre should all be the same.
