An analysis of how game companies like Nintendo, Rockstar, Bethesda and CD Projekt Red are earning player trust.
“When you look around at the gaming industry, specifically Microsoft and Sony, these companies create dark, violent and deep storytelling experiences for gamers.” Sony in particular produces games of all sorts of different tonalities. It doesn’t specifically skew the majority of its titles to any one demographic.
Like Dream, it’s a Sony First Party Game. I do respect CD Project Red and others, but it’s seem the journalist is very bias.
Not just Dreams I mean if you compare the styles of the different games they both make you’ll see the variety differs...and I’m talking about comparing tones in this example NOT exclusives. Horizon Zero Dawn Days Gone Dreams God of War Knack Uncharted Ratchet and Clank MLB GT Tearaway Ghosts of Tsushima Super Mario Odyssey Legend of Zelda BotW Splatoon Mario Kart Smash Bros Yoshi Upcoming Game Pokemon Sun and Moon Star Fox Zero Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Arms Sony don’t just do dark or serious, they do a variety of games. Nintendo in terms of tone are almost all the same. Colourful, bright, light hearted, warm. I mean even in the list above it mostly comes down to the fact they don’t do many new IPs. If you make a sequel to Mario for example then it’s obviously going to feature the same tone as before.
No bias at all! I just think there's a distinct differentiation between Microsoft / Sony and Nintendo. I never said dark and serious games were bad I'm a HUGE Last Of Us and Halo fan. It's just nice to have Nintendo back on top with bright and colorful games that they're so good at making. That's all I was saying.
Hey There. Get what you're saying and maybe I should've been more specific. I would agree that yes both Microsoft and Sony produce games from a vast amount of different genres and art styles. But the games that they put the budget behind, the games they showcase at conferences, all tend to be more serious. Think Days Gone, The Last Of Us, God of War, Halo, Gears Of War... That's where the differentiation happens between Microsoft / Sony and Nintendo and that's what I was speaking towards.
“Nintendo is simply just a breath of fresh air with it’s colorful, cartoony worlds and non-ultra-violent combat” I know a vast amount of non-Nintendo games that fit that very description. You’d have to be very narrow minded to think only Nintendo provides those experiences.
I think people forget about Dream. That game is from Media Molecule who behind LittleBigPlanet series and Terraway. Those games was colorful and cartoon and lighthearted.
I’m not even talking about games from Sony that skew towards that demographic. I’m talking about a large number of publishers who produce the type of games the author is describing. Nintendo is nowhere near the only developers who produce colorful cartoony games.
Hey just to clarify, I never said they're the only ones making those games. Of course, they aren't Ori and the Blind Forest is one of my favorite games (colorful, cartoony, Microsoft). I was just explaining that in terms of differentiation, Nintendo does colorful non-ultra violent games really well and those are the games that they push in terms of marketing
