Nintendo Exec on Why They Don't Pursue 4K/VR: If We Do The Same as Others, We're Doomed To Die

Nintendo France boss Philippe Lavoué gave a frank response to why the company didn't pursue 4K and Virtual Reality so far. After saying that the audience is still too limited, he clarified that doing the same as Sony and Microsoft could doom Nintendo to die just by virtue of being smaller than these huge corporations.

It's not powerful enough for VR or 4K

KaiPow10d ago

Nintendo's always been about doing their own thing, even if it isn't always the right thing (friend codes).

ABizzel19d ago (Edited 9d ago )

The power war is a losing battle for Nintendo. They need to focus on creativity and portability, which are their strong suits.

Leave the power and graphics war to PlayStation and Xbox. And speaking of Xbox they need to find a niche of their own so they can find success like Nintendo has with the Switch. NVIDIA helped Nintendo be different with the Switch, maybe MS should reach out to them and see if there's anything they can do to differentiate the Xbox brand, Team double green PConsole.

hiawa2310d ago

Pretty much is the simple real reason.

bluefox75510d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Even if it were, the resolution of the Switch is too low for VR to be a feasible option. Anyone who has ever tried Google Cardboard on a 1080p phone knows how bad the screen door effect is even at 1080p, 720p would look awful.

LoveSpuds10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I don't get the impression he was making a statement about why they don't try and implement 4K or VR on Switch, he was simply explaining why the went down the hybrid route with Switch INSTEAD OF creating a 4K/VR capable console.

pandehz10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

They did not plan to even design a console for that.

Their idea was so i could cuddle with my gf and have a controller on each hand.

zb1ftw77710d ago

You didn't even understand the article.....

deafdani10d ago

Chances are he didn't even read it.

DillyDilly9d ago

Sometimes being different is a good thing & as we are seeing the every day gamers are loving the Switch

RosweeSon9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Because they chose not to go down that route they did state quite clearly we do the same as the rest were doomed so they didn’t plan for 4K don’t blame them it’s not the be all end all yet not like when HD took over maybe next year but seriously not all about 4K when you have games as good as Nintendo so sure would look great in 4K but they don’t exactly look bad in current state ;) unless you live and breath 4K gaming which 90% console owners don’t new Xbox1X owners and PC owners sure the majority no

Not really. Doesn't have to push boundaries like the rest but when it comes to other things like Online, such as an achievement system or just have a stable online running with a good voice chat I don't see how that would kill you. They seem to think doing the same will kill them when really I think it's pride...they have to be the first ones to do it.

People will want Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Metroid, F-Zero, Pikman, Kirby, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Smash Bros, Pokemon etc so it's not like they'd turn away from those franchises alone.

Theknightofnights10d ago

They specifically mentioned 4K and VR, so I'm not sure why you are mentioning online and voice chat.

-Foxtrot10d ago (Edited 10d ago )'s just an example to show the difference that adding things everyone else won't "kill them" all the time.

They might not want VR or 4K, that's totally fine, but it doesn't stop them adding the smaller things.

Another one...classic games to download on their store. Gamecube games maybe.

Don't know why you are acting like what I've said is malicious...

Theknightofnights10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I don't really see how you think I'm acting like what you said is malicious...

-Foxtrot10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Because you're saying "so I'm not sure why you are mentioning online and voice chat" like you think I'm trying to "twist it" into something else. That's why.

If that was the case why make the comment in the first place, what point would you get across telling me what I already know. It wouldn't make sense. So there obviously was a reason to the comment or it was pointless, no way you'd really think I didn't know it was about 4k and VR when I literally made a point of that in my original comment.

Plus going off your comment're quick to defend Nintendo so you might have seen this as some kind of "attack" on them and leapt in.

Theknightofnights10d ago

I replied to your comment because it didn't seem like you read the article. If you didn't appreciate my comment that's fine, but I don't think we need this escalating any further.

It's time for F-Zero, 2018 style!

G3ng4r10d ago

Only if they put sega on it. I'd settle for a gx remaster.

WickedLester9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Switch already has that. It's called Fast RMX. Seriously that game is awesome and a steal right now for 16.99 It's modern day F Zero in every way but name! In fact, it behooves me as to why Nintendo didn't just license the F Zero name out to the developer in the first place. The game is definitely worthy of the name.

I agree trot. It's the games that Nintendo make which bring many to the table. Especially those outside the Nintendo loyalists. The only thing a beefier console would do is cut into Nintendo profits. As they'd see less profit on the machines and spend more in development costs. As gamers, with not only those exclusive games but those exclusive games appealing to people the console will sell.

I've owned NES, Gamecube, Switch. My sister had an SNES while I had the Gensis but because one was in the house I was still able to play a bunch of SNES games I wanted to as a kid. N64 I played the shat out of Bond at friends houses. But see a pattern? NES by default, Gamecube had great games like Metroid Prime, Twilight Princess, Zelda Collection, Mario Sunshine, Resident Evil 4 (which was exclusive), Ikaruga, etc. It was a nice compliment to PS/XB and had some phenomenal games. As for Switch, I didn't buy it for a handheld. I bought it as a compliment console. For Zelda (which was somewhat disappointing), Mario, Xenoblade 2, Kirby, Yoshi, and future Nintendo titles hoping that this time they deliver more than they've been. Plus the hopes to see Twilight Princess in HD on Switch, etc. Wii U I found myself interested in a few times but only for a few games and it was well known that console wasn't going to survive. Point is, aside from loyalists it's the games that bring gamers to the table. Nintendo could do a beefy console and as long as they have those big titles and design an appealing game people will buy. If Sony didn't have all those titles I can honestly say I don't know that I'd still be gaming mainly on PS. Some will insert XB for whatever reasons.

Someone has to take the big risks...
Shout out to Nintendo.

Zeke6810d ago

Like Sony does with VR??

AspiringProGenji10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

I can tell where the 4 disagrees come from: the same xfans that side with Nintendo to diss Sony at any time or don’t admit that Sony takes more risks than their company. PS VR is a big risk that is also paying off. Just another fact the same 4 Don’t care to admit either

Kun_ADR10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

If anything, it is Oculus who had spearheaded and took the first risk with VR.

And not dissing the PSVR or anything, but 2 millions units sold isn’t “paying off”. That can barely cover the cost of R&D.

BlackTar18710d ago

Switch isn't a big risk. It's relatively safe.

gangsta_red10d ago

I disagree, not making a traditional at home console on top of having specs that are way less than Xbox/PS4 is a huge risk, especially coming off of Wii U.

AZRoboto10d ago

To follow gangsta and especially the Wii U - the Switch seems to be the direct successor the Wii U would have had even if it was a success, a natural evolution of the play-away-from-TV-but-still-a- console concept. But the Wii U sold worse than the Dreamcast.

So yeah it's a massive risk. It's silly to suggest otherwise.

deafdani10d ago

Wii U sold more than Dreamcast, actually. WIi U sold a bit more than 13 million, Dreamcast a bit more than 9 million.

BlackTar18710d ago

Its not s home console though its a hand held that can be plugged into a tv . Nintendo make the best handhelds.

gangsta_red10d ago

"Its not s home console though its a hand held that can be plugged into a tv . Nintendo make the best handhelds."

Or maybe it's a home console that's also a hand held that plugs into your TV!

Concertoine9d ago

Just because the Switch is Nintendos most practical gimmick doesnt mean it is safe. Coming a few years after the Vita flopped after it promised "console gaming in your pocket", they resold the idea and are doing well with it.

ziggurcat10d ago

They didn't take any risks, though...

gangsta_red10d ago

How did they not take a risk?

The Wii U was underpowered and a failure. It would have been easy for Nintendo to go the safe route and make a powerful home system the same as PS4 and Xbox. Which most everywhere on the net told them to do.

But they didn't, they took a risk with another under powered (in comparison to the PSXbox) and making it portable on top of it all...especially knowing that they also have a simpler portable that has dominated the market in the 3DS for a very long time.

Lime12310d ago

Didn't Microsoft said that Xbox One will have VR support. Where is it?

jznrpg10d ago

They did a 360 on that one and then a 180

Xx_Pistol_xX10d ago

What big risk are you talking about. The Switch is a Nvidia tablet.

jznrpg10d ago

Dont see the big risk , they invested the least amount of money into their console and made a handheld which Japan mainly wants. Nvidia had a ton of those shield guts laying around and Nintendo threw them in their plastic, which was a very low cost "risk"

TheOttomatic9110d ago

Well they did the opposite of others with the Wii U didn’t work out so well great then and without any great exclusives coming out this year I doubt we’ll see a successful 2018

Jules__Badguy10d ago

Got the lottery numbers in that crystal ball?

Imalwaysright10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Its like some of you act dumb on purpose and I have to ask: why?! Pokemon alone would ensure a successful year for the Switch in terms of hardware sales. Neither Sony or MS have exclusives that sell around 15 million copies per game like mainline Pokemon games do and if Pokemon takes advantage of the Switch hardware it could very well be the biggest exclusive of this generation.

galmi10d ago

Adding to pokemon, they do have star fox and many other franchises you knw

The 10th Rider10d ago

Yeah, and not to mention games like Breath of the Wild, Odyssey, and Mario Kart still exist. Each one of those games has already sold as much as most of the top selling games on other consoles (which have substantially larger install bases) and they will continue to sell well for years to come. If Nintendo brings out a decent lineup of Switch software, even if it's a bit scaled back from last year, it'll easily carry them through until Pokemon.

Imalwaysright9d ago

The 10th Rider

Exactly. Nintendo has the strongest 1st party of the big 3.

Xx_Pistol_xX9d ago

@galmi Starfox isn't a big seller for Nintendo. Not like Pokemon, Mario and Zelda.

Sony and Nintendo are completely different beasts, but both offer amazing experiences.

LoveSpuds10d ago

Agreed, between my Pro and my Switch I have been utterly spoiled for choice, I literally cannot keep up with the games.
