Overall Game of the Year 2017

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "With PS4 at the peak of its power, indie developers pushing the envelope, and Nintendo Switch serving notice that it's here to stay, 2017 saw a glut of amazing software. The indie darling Cuphead won the hearts and minds of critics and consumers with its punishing difficulty and Max Fleischer cartoon aesthetic. Horizon: Zero Dawn impressed with gorgeous graphics, intense combat, and a vast open world. The Switch launch title Breath of the Wild proved to be a killer app for Nintendo's upstart hybrid. Atlus' Persona 5 won over a legion of fans thanks to its impressive art direction, battle system, and story. And finally Super Mario Odyssey, in a year of game-of-the-generation candidates, actually scored the highest. There was no shortage of greatness in 2017."

I saw the winner and the runner up for this article a mile away

it's tough because even look at a game like Mario Odyssey, which is absolutely brilliant. Probably one of the best Mario games in a long time. And it's being relegated to 3rd place on many lists.

Any one of these games (BOTW, Horizon, Odyssey) could win GOTY in a down year. But the fact that we got 3 games of this caliber in the same year speaks volumes about how good 2017 actually was.

I totally agree. They all deserve a GOTY award.

I got to play all 3 plus NeiR, and now I'm playing Persona 5. What great year for games in 2017.

another game that could have won in a less packed year. So many good titles in 2017.

I'm playing BotW right now and loving every second of it. It just has a certain level of charm about it. I am torn though. I really love BotW, but at the same time I would like a more classic style Zelda game also. Hopefully they haven't given up completely on making the older classic style Zeldas.

Horizon was also a fantastic game but it failed to suck me in. I do recognize it as a great game though. For me it just didn't grab me. The giant robot enemies were cool and all, but I don't feel like anything else was exciting. Just me though. Again, fantastic game.

Mario Odyssey is quite possibly the best Mario game ever made. But I enjoy Zelda more simply because of the Fantasy-RPG elements and action.

Zelda was my personal GOTY but it does upset me a bit that Nioh barely got mentioned in any of the GOTY discussions. It was so good.

Zelda:BOTW set the bar for games in general last March.

GOTY was inevitable.
