What We Need From a Horizon Zero Dawn Sequel to Crown it a Future GOTY

"The PS4 had a fantastic year in 2017, there’s no question. And one title stood head and shoulders above all others: Horizon Zero Dawn. But to exceed the rest of the field in 2017 was a big ask; a year that was probably one of the best years for gaming ever. So what can Guerrilla Games do with the Horizon Zero Dawn sequel to make sure they’re top dogs of the year we finally see the next game?" - Ben Hutchings, Gamer Professionals.

Not have it release next to a main line Nintendo game since we would know the outcome. Didn't stand a chance this year...no game did.

Rude-ro255d ago

I think you meant to say “not to realease in the year that Nintendo FINALLY released a good Zelda game”.

LordoftheCritics255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

You mean Guerilla Games FINALLY released a good game?

Zelda has always been boundary pushing innovative titles. If you followed video games well, you would know.

xX-oldboy-Xx255d ago

LordoftheCritics - fairly condescending comment buddy, KILLZONE 2 is a fantastic game. And GG are tech gurus, they've got some decent writing staff - so the future looks bright.

MrVux000255d ago

@LordoftheCritics

"You mean Guerilla Games FINALLY released a good game? "

GG developed one generation-defining game known as Killzone 2, aswell as Killzone 3 which was also quite close to achieving the same masterpiece quality as the KZ2 but fallen a bit short in some areas.

Killzone 1 and Killzone:Shadow Fall however, were somewhat mediocre.

NecrumOddBoy254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

Horizon is substantially better than Zelda in almost every facet comparable. If breath of the wild we're not a Zelda title, it would have never won a single award. Horizon zero Dawn, Persona 5, and Mario Odyssey are leagues better than Zelda. I truly don't know why a game that has no story, 95% of the game being pointless and irrelevant, unrewarding fetch Quest, and nothing that make Zelda A Zelda game even was considered. The format of this game is built like an iPhone free to play game. Basic puzzles and collecting the same thing over and over again to upgrade very basic stats.

TekoIie254d ago

@MrVux000

I think you're overplaying Killzones actual level of success.

A generation-defining game would be something Like Call of Duty 4 or Dota 2/League Of Legends. Killzone didn't really inspire much outside of its own series.

-Foxtrot254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

Eh?

Ocarina of Time was fantastic

Majoras Mask was great

Wind Waker was amazing

Twlight Princess was awesome

Skyward Sword...meh, okay.

BotW was a good, solid game but not as special as people made out. Overrated.

They are all have been good. However past games from OoT to Twilight Princess were better then BotW

MrVux000254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

@TekoIie

"A generation-defining game would be something Like Call of Duty 4 or Dota 2/League Of Legends. Killzone didn't really inspire much outside of its own series."

We obviously have a completely different definition of "generation-defining game".

Theknightofnights254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

So you guys are more than willing to defend the Killzone series and even go on to say it's generation defining, but will completely brush aside Zelda titles?

Seriously? Wow.

Kribwalker254d ago

@mrvux
the only thing generation defining with KZ2 was defining how to pretend a pre rendered tech demo was in game graphics.
The game was good, but that’s the most remembered thing from it

Umb254d ago

Or perhaps media bias??? When comparing a new Ip vs an long established and much loved franchise.

TekoIie254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

@MrVux000

Then actually give your definition rather than using it as a way to lump empty praise onto a game.

I would define a game as generation-defining if it manages to start a trend. Call of Duty 4 popularised the FPS genre and had many games use similar templates for class systems. Dota 2 and League began the new wave of MOBA's and even inspired other genres to include your typical MOBA mechanics.

I cant think of anything Killzone did that created a similar effect. So what is your definition of Generation-defining and how does it not apply to every game you like?

MrVux000254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

@Theknightofnights

"So you guys are more than willing to defend the Killzone series and even go on to say it's generation defining, but will completely brush aside Zelda titles?

Aside from fanboy comments, no one is brushing aside Zelda titles (besides from Twilight Princess which is universally disliked by the hardcore fans and newcomers alike), people just expressed that most of these tittles aside from Ocarina of time, are significantly overrated and many flaws get overlooked which would not happen if the game didn't happen to have "Zelda" in the tittle.

And no one is regarding Killzone series as a 'whole' as generation defining, since the only 'true' masterpiece was Killzone 2 out of all games released, which is regarded as one of the generation defining-games of PS3 era.

MrVux000254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

@Kribwalker

"the only thing generation defining with KZ2 was defining how to pretend a pre rendered tech demo was in game graphics.

Your opinion on what generation-defining things KZ2 brought aside, maybe the game simply was not your cup of tea. As for the pre-rendered tech demo, the retail game came quite close to that and as KZ3 demonstrated it was possible to achieve that in KZ 2 if they had more time.

KZ2 was generation defining, because the weapon handling and movement actually had some weight to it unlike other fps games like Call of Duty and Battlefield where its pretty much 'walk-on-water' kind of thing.

Aside, from obvious things like graphics and insane level-design, it's still regarded as one of the hardest SP-FPS games that had never seen before cover-system (for FPS games) of PS3 era and not to mention the ever-popular multiplayer (that is still alive for a reason).

The rest you can read from the critics and fans alike.

MrVux000254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

@Tekolie

"Then actually give your definition rather than using it as a way to lump empty praise onto a game. "

(in-short) Most games on the "generation-defining" ; ; ; list are because of positive reasons; they became definitive purely through their 'high quality' and not purely on their 'popularity'.

"I would define a game as generation-defining if it manages to start a trend."

So games like The Last Of Us or Shadow of Colossus are not generation-defining for you? Interesting.

Imalwaysright254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

MrVux000

"which is regarded as one of the generation defining-games of PS3 era"

Never heard that before and I disagree. If you said Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls or TloU I could see it but Killzone 2? A FPS that was released in the same generation as CoD4? Nope.

Theknightofnights254d ago

@Mr.Vux

"Aside from fanboy comments, no one is brushing aside Zelda titles"

Except the comment that we both are posting to, and the majority of disagree's people have received for saying the opposite on this site.

"besides from Twilight Princess which is universally disliked by the hardcore fans and newcomers alike"

This is entirely news to me. Are you sure you didn't mean Skyward Sword? Even that game has a pretty loyal fanbase.

"people just expressed that most of these tittles aside from Ocarina of time, are significantly overrated and many flaws get overlooked which would not happen if the game didn't happen to have "Zelda" in the tittle."

I don't know why people feel they are overrated when they hardly ever get as much praise as BotW is receiving this year. Besides, wouldn't that be brushing the franchise aside which you just said people weren't doing?

Well one company is known for releasing stellar game after stellar game and the other.. well you see where I'm going with this? xD

kayoss254d ago

Yes, but that doesn’t mean another company make a better game. Just because Zelda is a big name brand, it gets all the accolades. Even if it was undeserving.
This year, Bias played a big role in determining GOTY... in my opinion.

TheOttomatic91254d ago

Horizon was still a success regardless though, BOTW sold only slight more than Horizon.

Would be great to see a co-op feature/option where you need to team up with a friend(s) to take down bigger Dinobots. Would be cool to also see some sort of faction multiplayer where you catch Zoids and then mount them, ambush and start running amok in an enemy camp.

I see a lot of potential for this game on the MP side.

Septic255d ago

Yeah deffo. Coop would be wicked in this

MegamanXXX255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

Never going to happen. It's a great single player experience!! Don't need co-op

255d ago
gangsta_red255d ago

@Megaman

The single player would still be there, no reason to not have Friends join in on that great experience with a mp option.

MegamanXXX254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

@Woolly
What's hilarious is that the three Xbox musketeers is all together in a ps4 article replying what I said about a ps4 Single player game. Guerilla games already said it will only be a single player focus game.

Septic254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

Lol nice edit there.

"What's hilarious is that the three Xbox musketeers is all together in a ps4 article replying what I said about a ps4 Single player game. "

What's hilarious is that you got so shook and scared, you changed your comment. 😂

All we said was coop would be good for this. But that got you triggered hard. 🤣

"The single player would still be there, no reason to not have Friends join in on that great experience with a mp option."

Key word here gangsta is FRIENDS 😁 Hence why it might not appeal to some

MegamanXXX253d ago

@Septic

What's hilarious is that the Xbox one is getting destroyed this generation and the One x can't save it 😁

Well originally GG wanted to add Co op to Horizon but believe was yet not right move for a new IP. So maybe for the sequel.

UCForce254d ago

It doesn’t need to. Even GG said HZD was their first Single Player Game and people love it. So I do think they will keep that way.

UCForce254d ago (Edited 254d ago )

Remember God Of War Acesion ? It hurt the game quality because the focus on MP was like 55%. So yeah, i’m glad the new God Of War is Single Player Focus and it’s going to be bigger and better. I’m not against the multiplayer and coop, but it’s seem nowadays that people think MP and Coop are the future which I think is way too much. People said Gaas is the future, but will Gaas be a perfect future of gaming ? No, it won’t be.

gangsta_red254d ago

"It hurt the game quality because the focus on MP was like 55%"

Proof that the MP is what hurt the game not the actual whole game itself.

"...but it’s seem nowadays that people think MP and Coop are the future"

Not really, are we not throwing out ideas on what could be in a possible sequel? Do you seriously have no faith in GG that they couldn't make a decent MP feature? Was there Killzone series not proof enough that they can do this or do you also think that Killzone's SP suffered because of their focus on MP?

Having a MP doesn't mean they will get rid of SP. I don't know why the mere mention of SP or co-op sends some into a frenzy.

Better, more character focused story. More engaging side quests. I think the story had a great premise, but the execution lacked compared to other aspects of the game. Also, maybe be less ham handed with certain themes and messages. The gameplay was top notch though, really have no criticisms for that. Also, would like to see some new, innovative additions to the open world genre, as the current tried and true formula is beginning to get a bit stale. I think after their success, they'll be far more confident and willing to try new things.
