Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo 2017 Report Cards

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "As the year draws to a close and we start to turn our attention towards 2018, its time to reflect on the best and worst parts of the last 365 days. And in the gaming industry we are almost never spared the roller-coaster ride, with constant ups and downs that keep us almost as entertained as the games we get to play. So to close out the year, we here at Link-Cable have decided to grade the ‘big three’s’ performances in 2017 and assign them a grade based on how the year went, what they did well and what could have been improved upon."

Really? you give Nintendo an A+ but Sony gets an A-?? I don't see how that works when the PS4 is not only selling amazingly well but it has highly rated exclusives to back it up along with tons to look forward to even next year.
MS- Hardware but no exclusives
Nintendo- Exclusives, Hardware, but barley any 3rd party support
Sony- Exclusives, Hardware and third party support.

Eltortugagames321d ago

It’s not just the switch. Nintendo killed with snes classic and the 3ds managed to sell more then last year. Pretty impressive.

Sgt_Slaughter321d ago

I agreed all the way until the barely part. They've vastly improved since the Wii U era, and it's only getting better.

Brooooooo. It's just a minus.

andibandit320d ago

"with tons to look forward to even next year"

wouldn't that be reflected in next years grade?.

DanteVFenris666320d ago

Nintendo had momentum all year round.

Sony had a phonemonal first 6 months. But than it was just third parties and besides evil within 2 and Wolfenstein 2 most were the crap yearly releases.

Though even considering that I’d both give them a A+. Both were good. Though considering we’re nintendo dig themselves out of I think the grades are appropriate

This was a report card for 2017.

And frankly, Sony did very little this year except suck money from gamers. They had a nice selection of exclusive games, but their support for VR is slowly diminishing, the PS4 Pro pales in comparison to both the switch hardware (highly portable Switch) and Xbox One X (true 4K), and they brought very insignificant features to both the console firmware and network. I'd give Sony a C+ because the only thing going for them is a bunch of exclusive Japanese games and Sony exclusives, to which the Sony exclusives weren't that great this year outside of Horizon Zero Dawn. Knack II, Gran Turismo Sport, MLB 17, Uncharted Lost Legacy, etc. were just more OK quality exclusives. My Sony friends kept talking about the future this year and really didn't talk about how great 2017 was.

I'd give Xbox One a C+ as well. They brought significant console enhancements through Xbox Original BC, Gifting, and Game Pass. They had some ok console exclusives in Halo Wars 2, Forza Motorsports 7, Cuphead, and PUBG Preview. But they need to do more on the console exclusive side. While in previous years my Xbox friends were down about Xbox's future there seems to be some positive lights ahead. All my gaming friends were talking about how well Xbox is doing 4K on X.

Nintendo did the best at a B. Cool hardware but as usual under-powered. But brought big Nintendo franchises to switch in the first year including both Mario and Zelda games. My Nintendo friends talked about what they got and the future because of how well switch is doing.

CaptainObvious878320d ago

I am sooo sick of people constantly patting ninty on the back.

Sony released more games, plus the amazing 3rd party games that could never run on the underpowered switch and they have the much better hardware.

For core gamers, Sony clearly did better in 2017.

Xbox One took an L on Big triple AAA exclusives however Xbox deserves better than a D+. It's as if no one gives credit to Game Pass, [email protected], Xbox One X, Xbox live updates, Cross Play, Xbox Play Anywhere, Back Compatability and solid games like Halo Wars 2, Forza 7, Path of Exiles, Cuphead, PUBG. They have great games that you can't find on competing console. I would grade Xbox One a B-.

KwietStorm321d ago

If Xbox gets a B- this year of all years, then they will never, ever get a failing grade from you.

Automatic79320d ago

I gave a solid critique. You never provided a real reason as too why Xbox deserved a D-.

sinspirit321d ago

The only unique game of that list is Cuphead.

Halo Wars 2 bombed with what little fans the series had. It's not a solid game.

Yearly or every other year franchises lose impact. If you play a diverse list of games then you'll know.

PUBG is a "console launch exclusive" and the release was terribly plagued with issues and being rushed. I play on PC. It's fun but it's not a one of a kind game. Fortnite is free and on PS4 with more frequent support.

No one gives credit to the One X? They give negative credit to it. While sporting awesome hardware for the money, the exclusive support is terrible to the point that it feels like a sham.

Backwards compatibility is amazing, but it's not the reason you buy new hardware.

It's wise not to get hung up on temporary fixes. That's basically what MS's support has come down to for their own platform.

Imalwaysright320d ago

"Backwards compatibility is amazing, but it's not the reason you buy new hardware. "

BC has always been important for someone as myself who has never sold a game but with the direction this industry is going (MTs/loot boxes/GaaS) I now see BC as a must have and if I had to choose between consoles it would definetely be a reason to choose console A over console B.

starchild320d ago

Backwards compatibility matters a lot to me. It's one of the things I love about PC gaming and I can understand why it would matter to people on consoles too.

I think some of you make too much of exclusives. They matter but they aren't the end all be all. For most platforms the exclusives that appeal to me only amount to one or two, maybe three, games a year. I own a PS4 Pro and the only games I bought for it in 2017 were Horizon and Uncharted The Lost Legacy.

I'm not saying exclusives don't help make a platform more attractive, they do. And Microsoft need to do better with them. I'm just saying there are lots of other things that matter in a platform.

trooper_320d ago

The XBox did deserve a D. What did they do that warrants something higher than a D?

FallenAngel1984321d ago

Nintendo gets a higher grade when Sony’s platform offered way more content?

septemberindecember320d ago

I’ve said this before, but you always seem to bring up “how much” without considering the impact.

For example, the Vita has more games than the 3DS overall, but I wouldn’t say it’s library is better. More content can mean better value/content, but it’s not intrinsic.

TomatoDragon320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

We’re talking about the Ps4 though. Not the Vita. The PS4 had more games this year than Switch, and more highly rated.

septemberindecember320d ago

Do you not understand what an example or analogy is?

kayoss320d ago

Of course he does, it just your analogy sucks.

ILostMyMind320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

So Switch is for PS4 what 3DS is for Vita ...? I really don't think so.

septemberindecember320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

The example succeeds to explain the concept. It’s your propensity to understand that lacks.

septemberindecember320d ago

No, that isn’t quite what’s being compared. It’s impactfullness vs. large quantity what 3DS is to Vita regarding software libraries.

InTheZoneAC320d ago

stop overthinking it and and quit talking about the vita

septemberindecember320d ago

I’m not overthinking anything, you are just refusing to think about it at all.

@ No

People make it sound like one game can overshadow another platform’s entire annual library.

@ sept

You really gonna sit there and pretend PS4’s library didn’t have any impact?

Imalwaysright320d ago

The games that have a big impact on the PS4 are 3rd party games that Sony isn't responsible for such as Fifa, CoD or Battlefront but Sony isn't responsible for those (or Persona, Nier and Ni-oh) so to me, it seems about right that Nintendo has better grade than Sony considering that GT which is historically Sony's biggest franchise is a shadow of its former self both critically and commercially because it wasn't made with GT fans in mind so that that leaves Horizon + TLL vs Zelda + Mario and that doesn't seem at all like a fair "fight"

TallonIV320d ago

More content doesn't mean better. I'd take one 95+ game over 3 80+ games. Quality > Quantity.

remixx116320d ago

Good thing Sony has multiple 90+ games and a ton of 80+ games as well.

A shit load of quality games can have a big impact. That's what I feel like people forget.

Either that or people try to move goal posts to help their system look better like saying it wasn't developed by Sony so it shouldn't who gives a shit, if it's exclusive to Sony's platform and Sony's platform is a large chunk of why its successful then yes it's belongs to Sony's catalog.

Knushwood Butt320d ago

Have you seen the Switch software lineup for the next 3 months?

xsta1ker320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

way more content in sub 4k... is that what you meant to say.

EddieNX 320d ago

sony had another great year. But Nintendos was even better
I don't know how anyone can argue with that. this article hits the nail on the head .

EddieNX 320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

7 of the top 10 selling games on amazon in order from top to bottom

Super Mario Odyssey
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
Horizon Zero Dawn
Call of Duty: WWII (PS4)Call of Duty: WWII (Xbox One)
Splatoon 2
Pokémon Ultra Sun
Pokémon Ultra Moon
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U)

In terms of hardware, the Nintendo Switch was Amazon’s best-selling video game console — Switch consoles with gray Joy-Cons outsold those with neon Joy-Cons.

Knushwood Butt320d ago

Horizon is killing it for a new IP.
