Twinfinite staff cast their vote on who sits atop the pile this year when it comes to the open world category.
Zelda or Nier: Automata

I forgot Assassin's Creed Origins is another good one
Pretty lifeless? Yet, you contradict yourself saying you fight the wild machines that roam the map. yeah... lifeless.
Mordor, no question.
@Sunny_D Filling the map with enemies doesn't make a good open world game Lol you have to have more than that. Exploration is key! The Witcher 3 is a great example of open world done right
Lol bro how is horizons world lifeless especially compared to neir where nothing really goes on. People and machines are constantly fighting each other in the world in horizon, when you're facing off against machines they can knock down walls, cabins etc, there's patrols and merchants and other things. Now in neirs open world if you can really even call it that because it's extremely small and presented almost like separate levels but anyway there's no patrols, robots that hop around in a very small radius waiting for you to get close,no big settlements and what's there is static. Meridian in horizon is amazing and full of life and there's nothing like that in neir. Horizon and botw are easily some of the best open worlds not just this year but this gen and neirs is nowhere near as good as either of them.
Neir automata open world is nowhere near as fleshed out or good has botw and horizons
Horizon?? Lol I must be playing a different game. Horizon's open world is pretty lifeless, pretty but lifeless lol it is a good time waste game though, I often load it up to fight some Tramplers, Ravagers, Glinthawks etc. At least Nier has things to see in its open world
@sammar Platinumed them both, you’re just plain wrong. Nier Automata doesn’t have swimming or interactive water that can carry you away, no day night cycles, no weather, no climates (HZD has snow physics, sand snow and rain storms), no interactive underbrush you can hide in for stealth or pick for crafting, far fewer villages, no enemy camps to take over. HZD has more NPCs walking around fighting eachother or simply available to talk to or quest, enemies can light the environment on fire and knock over trees, various environmental mods like corruption. More dungeons, enemies you can control, ice that can break, more variety in landscapes and enemies, more collectibles (vantage points, relics, audio diaries). Nothing lifeless about it next to Nier. Easily rebuked.
@P_bomb I own both games too. Horizon's settlements all look the same with nothing special about them and there's nothing to see when traveling in Horizon Most of your points are related to physics which still doesn't make it a good open world game And like I said earlier more enemies doesn't help Horizons dull world there's nothing to see while exploring besides the occasional NPC vs machines battle
You’re not making an objective argument for why you think Nier is a better open world. Provide examples for “nothing to see” and disprove what I said about Nier’s open world. What’s there to see in Nier’s desert? Nothing. What’s in the space station compared to Meridian? Nothing. The empty human buildings are just big empty rooms.
zelda then mario. haven’t played AC Origin yet but i’ve liked Shadow Of Wars open world much better then HZD
Of course you did.
well sunny, since you’ve played them both to have an opinion please tell me why i should feel differently
lol you troll everything Sony so nobody is surprised that you would actually like shadow of wars absolutely atrocious open world that's more like mmo zones more than horizons
Zelda is truly open world in so many ways. Don't think any game has hit this mark yet in terms of open world. GTA V is probably the only challenger. Nier has a pretty unique world, not very open but cool. HZD is another decent open world feel. Not as open world as Zelda. Still quite limited. This year had some quality open world titles.
Lol you just keep proving you didn't play horizon very much if at all because their settlements were def different. MOthers crown was completely different compared to meridian or sunfalls but it's cute you tried to deflect everything that dudes comment named that proves horizons open world is better than neirs. It doesn't matter anyway most websites aren't even naming neir has one of the best open worlds that honor is mostly going to botw, horizon and origins
HZD, Nier or Zelda! I also enjoyed Origins! Horizon is my favorite but they all were very enjoyable in different ways!
Horizon Zero Dawn would be my pick with Assassin's Creed Origins coming in a close second.
Horizon for me.
Robot dinosaurs ftw
Crazy year when Horizon doesn't win anything. Stunning game. Breath of the Wild was just too good, though.
that's just one award which is televised. there are other awards too and I think HZD will snag a good amount of them
Nintendo must of paid someone off or these nominaters havent played Horizon Zero Dawn it should have won over another Zelda
u mad bro? People just like Zelda more... it is what it is.
Yep! We need a revote its fixed lol
HZD is not as open world as Zelda. I have played pretty much all the AAA games of the year and Zelda might just be the most open world, sandboxy, vertical, non linear title ever in existence. I believe the critics are being sensible in their selections. Go anywhere besides here, and the story is almost entirely on Zelda. I believe gamers from this site should expand outwards a bit in gaming choices. They won't regret it.
HZD for me.
Zelda Horizon and AC origins are the best open world games you can buy. Worth every penny.
I've started playing HZD, Damn this game is good.
It has a really engaging story! I sought out every piece of back story whether it was holograms or just data logs. I was impressed by how fleshed out the narrative, characters, combat and the world were. It feels like a series that's been around for years because everything comes together so flawlessly! I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Horizon Zero Dawn for me.
HZD if you’re an adult or Zelda if you’re a pre-teen
I hope you're joking.
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” - C.S. Lewis.
Sounds like something a pre-teen would say
HZD. Absolutely stunning. seriously a visual feast.
AC:Origins for me..
Zelda, Yakuza, Mario and Nier. The others I don't give a sh*t about.
Zelda, for me,easily. An yes, I've played HZD. Well, for 5hrs or so, until I got bored with it. However, I know for many HZD is their choice. whatever floats your boat.
I haven't played a lot of games (including Zelda), but Horizon was the best game I've played since 2013 (GTAV). I'd take it over Witcher 3 even.
So many fun! Much many!
Prey or Mass Effect: Andromeda
Every site, every proper critic, every game award function will award ZELDA:BOTW because of this. ''the first proper open-world rendition of Hyrule is among the most compelling and captivating environments we’ve ever played. Its go-anywhere-do-anything design, aided by revelatory traversal mechanics and the sum of hundreds of tiny but incredible details culminates to produce a truly astonishing game. Breath of the Wild hasn’t just shaken up the Zelda franchise, it’s ushered fresh innovation and ideas into an entire genre… in its debut outing. It may well be remembered as a seminal open-world game in years to come.''
kind of hard to argue with that, isn't it....Oh wait..Nostalgia!!!
No doubt horizon was best open world of the year. Just an all round fantastic game.
No doubt!? Haha why is zelda winning everything over it if there is no doubt? Seems like a lot of people would doubt what you said.
So because other people like Zelda means I have to?? Don't be stupid. BOTW is highly overrated anyway.
No doubt to him. You seem to have an issue with everyone who doesn’t proclaim Zelda GOTY. You need to get over it.
I've only played Nier, Horizon, and Zelda, but I'd give a big advantage to Horizon and I think Nier was the worst of the 3.
Nintendo is good and everything but i just dont have time for games that are pushing one end of the picture, i want graphics, gameplay, narrative, everything nextgen and Zelda cant give me that no matter how good the game is so Horizon for me and it's for the same reason i don't play small indie games my daily life is too busy to find time for that... the same goes for Mario i think i will never play Super Mario ever again not because it's bad by far it's not that but i want games on the level and style of Death Stranding, Horizon, The Last of Us etc...
Definitely Horizon: Zero Dawn for me. Zelda was a fantastic game as well.
A toss up between BotW and ACO, the later being of course more technically impressive. But can't really go wrong with either.
Zelda.. and it isn't even close.
They packed too much in such a small world for Horizon. With such jarring changes in weather and locale, it's hard for me to say it had that great of an open world. It just wasn't believable how close desert was to snow.
Ever been to Vancouver? You can be in the sand for lunch then go up a tram to Grouse mountain after work, and there’s your snow.
It's far more jarring than that in Horizon, and it was only one example.
Horizons open world was small lol that's a new one man you fanboy haters will come up with the most ridiculous things to try to hate. It's like ever since horizon came out and delivered instead of failing like so many fanboys wanted for some pathetic reason it's hurt them and they spend all their free time hating as if that's going to change that horizon was a massive hit and is a franchise now
Definitely Horizon:Zero Dawn...tho i haven't played Origins.
1. HZD 2. Nier Automata 3. Assassin's Creed Origins 4. Shadow of War 5. ME: Andromeda 6. Zelda
Hahaha omg you are trying too hard. ME over Zelda? 😂😂
I have dozens of hours in every game on my list. I enjoyed ME:Andromeda very much. I did not like Zelda nearly as much. Trying? No. I tried my best to like Zelda. Sorry, but that game was made for Zelda fans. I’m not one of them. Did you play ME:A?
No love for Super Mario Odyssey here even though it's a series of big worlds (kingdoms)? For me Horizon and Super Mario Odyssey are the two best of the year followed closely by Uncharted Lost Legacy (which in itself should be winning 'Best Action Adventure Game' easily).
