Is the Xbox One X arriving with a new set of philosophies from Microsoft? Could this end up changing gaming? It might be a very different kind of console war moving into the New Year.
I honestly don't know why they are still even bothering, clearly they have no interest in console gaming, all they want is to be steam and take their cut from everyone elses games. They honestly should of made the 1x just a steam machine competitor that could also play all xbox1 and 360 discs too. That is obviously the market they are aiming for, but they are hindered by being built around the closed hardware model of console gaming. Its not like the ever did console gaming GOOD anyways they've just gotten lucky in timing on their first 2 systems to get a break (Sega dying and giving them a ton of games like jet grind radio and shemue 2) and the 360 coming first and so getting bioshock and mass effect
I think the closed model of console gaming has helped xbox. They tried to compete with steam and it was way worse than ps4 vs xbox one. Many pc gamers avoid microsoft store and games that release on ms store vs steam will sell will be like 95%-5% in favor of steam. On console they can charge to play online and get a cut of any 3rd party game that sell on xbox, but on pc they got nothing from "exclusives" like mass effect or bioshock
When Steam first released its games in early years did it not face issues?
I do wonder though if PC publishers will move to the MS Store and the Universal Windows Platform over time as their system is moving to a non-Win32 binary. It will make pirating and cheat on PC much more difficult. Not sure I want that but I am curious. Although their solution could ultimately be worse for the consumer in the long run. I don't really have much faith or trust in MS.
I miss Sega 😢
As said very well before me, Ive always felt like the Xbox brand was a trojan horse backdoor into the services industry to compete with Apple and now Steam. It shows very well in Microsofts lack of enthusiasm in creating first party studios and games. Microsoft has a leg up on Steam, as they have a huge hardware following to fund their software service ambitions. Whereas Gabe and Steam did it backwards and couldnt get the hardware to take in any meaningful way. If you look back 20 years, Microsoft has been chasing everything Apple has done... You can see it with their OS, then with Zune and the Windows Phone, Surface and Xbox Live. Trying to cash in on others successes. They have never been able to catch Apples golden goose. Though, I think they may very well be able to compete with Steam. Since they do have a dedicated hardware following and Live subscribers. Now, they just need to be able to compete with Steams sales... which are unbelievable! Whether you want to believe it or not, this isnt a kick on Microsoft. They are a business that is trying their best to expand, catch up to and compete with some of the best and most successful companies on the planet. And, I believe that if they can pull it off... its going to make the Xbox brand incredible, as Xbox gamers could have the entire history of PC games to pull from and play. Though, my only question about the Xboxs future is... What form will it take? Will it still be the console so many know and love? Or, will it be a service like Steam and you build your own PC? Taking it out of the console market, at least as we know it, altogether.
An iterative console isn't going to dramatically change the industry
First, I'm going to say that some of the gamers above have impressed me with their knowledge of what's going on. No one usually speaks of what Microsoft's is trying to do in the threads except me. But they know what's going on. Which is great. I even spoke of this today about Microsoft. Microsoft wants to be the guy in the background collecting checks. Nothing more. Just like Steam. Games running on their OS, programmed in windows creator update, running physics that they bought recently with Havok, wants developers to use symplygon, a 3D optimization tool that developers used that they bought as well, and if it's AR or VR, running on windows headsets that they are flooding the market with to do their typical EMBRACE, EXTEND, EXTINGUISH strategy they always implement to monopolize a product category https://en.m.wikipedia.org/... The company hasn't changed and just puts on a pretty face. Nice guy Phil is just trying a different approach. As for the article, it mentions Sony and cross play, but Sony has been doing that since **FINAL FANTASY XI on.... Wait for it... Wait.. For it...*** ((((PS2))))*** Sony didn't start cross play with SF5 or Rocket League this gen. They have been doing it for years. They asked Microsoft and Microsoft said no. Now they want to play nice after getting their @$$#$ kicked by PS4 and Sony. Talking all that crap last gen and part of its fan base said Sony was arrogant with PS3. Phil, Aaron, Larry, Peter, and developers like Turn 10 were so arrogant, that it made Sony look like saints. Now they talk about 3rd party deals as being bad but still do it to this day like the whole of last gen. Microsoft will lie(can't just flip a switch), mislead(Kinect) and manipulate (not say scalebound was canceled until after holiday sales of Xbox one) to get what they want. You can't trust them when they want to own everything and close down developers like EA does. Who else will they try and buy? Phys-X?
"Sony didn't start cross play with SF5 or Rocket League this gen. They have been doing it for years. They asked Microsoft and Microsoft said no." Nintendo wanted to do crossplay and Sony said no for Pure Chess too, so what's the problem there, Nintendo didn't say yes many years ago to work together before the PS1? "You can't trust them when they want to own everything and close down developers like EA does." Sony didn't close down Evolution and Liverpool? "Microsoft wants to be the guy in the background collecting checks. Nothing more. Just like Steam" Microsoft may not make as many games as you would like but they still make a lot more than Valve. Sony and Nintendo likes closed walls, it's their bread and butter. Microsoft sees Xbox as part of Windows aso their priorities are different. Yes they need to invest more but to suggest they are just Steam and want VR to be locked to them is hyperbole (you think Microsoft wants to monopolize the VR market which is just silly and shows how much you don't like the company). "Talking all that crap last gen and part of its fan base said Sony was arrogant with PS3. Phil, Aaron, Larry, Peter, and developers like Turn 10 were so arrogant, that it made Sony look like saints" Sony didn't call the Xbox 360 a Xbox 1.5? Now that Sony is arrogant again (not wanting to allow its users to do console crossplay, choose EA Access) it's no longer an issue? Turn 10 wasn't arrogant, they gave credit to Polyphony and just said that the torch was passed on and reviews showed they were right and Polyphony hasn't been the pinncale developer since GT3. It's ok, we get it. You think everyone is a hater who says things you don't like about games like GT Sport then go on to attack Forza 7 and act like you're just being constructive. Your relations with Sony has made you see Microsoft as the enemy. I don';t blame you, it's in their culture. We see it all the time. Even look at crossplay and so many don't want to help Microsoft or think it's all about Microsoft pushing it and not the developers. Every instance Sony may not be the most consumer freindly and its Microsoft to blame.
Microsoft is consumers friendly, oh really ? I don't need to say it twice about Sony and Microsoft. But calling Microsoft consumers friendly is wrong. Oh man, you are so predictable. Microsoft only doing this because they want to win Console War by doing opposite. If Sony lose Console War, you know MS will change their attitude toward consumers. And N4G is a conquest zone and every fanboys will take it.
" their culture". What's your culture then ? let me guess...yes to everything Microsoft ? I moved from having the 360 as my main to ps4, so what's my culture ? The fact is Microsoft was the enemy for most gamers at the start of this gen and rightly so if you ask me. Share play is minor compared to what they tried to force on us which was purely down to greed and nothing else. In fact, they should've been your enemy too since you pretend to be this unbias gamer but i know better. If you really wanna help the xbox brand, stop talking nonesense and let them continue their way to recovery ( theyre doing a decent job so far) but make no mistake, they deserved the reaction they got from gamers.
@UCForce "Microsoft only doing this because they want to win Console War by doing opposite." Good, glad you finally admit they are being much more consumer friendly because I care about now, not what ifs.
For a guy that supposedly doesn't even own an Xbox, you sure do worship them and bash Sony every shot you get, man. Idk, seems you do indeed have a dog in this fight, so to speak.
If them making changes to their Console and their plans happens to cause the industry to question it self and adapt That's all on the industry .
Are we really still beating this tired old drum?
OMG ENOUGH OF THESE BIASED XBOX ARTICLES THE SYSTEM IS DEAD LAST AND WILL REMAIN THAT WAY
Nearly 4 years later Xbox fans are still living on hopes and dreams. Just look at crap Microsoft feeds everyone. Microsoft Claims "Cloud" Will Quadruple Power of Xbox One http://www.escapistmagazine... “People Buy Xbox Because We Have The Biggest Exclusives’, Says Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg” https://gamingbolt.com/peop... Aaron Greenberg: “Quantum Break Windows Store exclusive, not coming to Steam” Just another lie. “Quantum Break Coming to Steam” “Microsoft lying about their size (Xbox One S ads have changed)“ https://i.redd.it/ivtjfny5d... Microsoft = Lies
I know man it is getting ridiculous to the point I am just going to leave this website. I remember coming here here and there was actual gaming news now its nothing but click bait garbage
I can't believe people praise Phil like a god. It's like a cult.
"Nearly 4 years later Xbox fans are still living on hopes and dreams." ....and Sony fans living on Xbox forums. Some of you people really need treatment. lol.
@ArmdChaos So do you.
@Skillz & Infected.. ya’ll are so blinded by this console fanboy studf its not even funny... Microsoft has shifted big time since Satya Nadella took over. Satya isnt like STEve Ballmer and doesnt want everything to be a fight. Yall are so ignorant and stuck in such a narrow minded state its not even funny.. but sad and pathetic... Microsoft Corp is making more money than it ever has in the companies lifetime... its because its better to be consumer friendly. Microsoft has become consumer focused in just about every division, with video games catching on late. Pay attention to a bigger picture and look at Microsoft as a whole over the past 3yrs or so. They are nowhere even the same company from 2013, when the Xbox One launched..
They are not blind. Microsoft still want to dominate console market by playing the opposite. I remember MS was doing last gen.
@UCForce... who was CEO of Microsoft last gen? Who was head of Xbox Last Gen?... you can't keep applying old management rules and regulations to new management rules and regulations. Ballmer/Moore/Mattrick ways are not Nadella's ways...
But why Greenberg and Larry are still here ? Phil Spencer can't even fix their tactics. Phil will do the same just like previous CEOs. He said he hate third party exclusive but why PUGB ? There so many questionable thing about Phil. I remember Phil wanted to win Console War, but he completely changed his mind afterward not in good way. He gave up and MS never reveal their hardware sales.
@UCForce... Major Nelson and Greenberg are doing what they get paid to do... CHEERLEAD Xbox in the best possible light... that is literally their jobs.. you also don't read.. phil hates exclusive game content (maps, guns, armor, etc) NOT FULL EXCLUSIVE GAMES... Phil wanted to win a console war during the end of the Ballmer administration... has to sing a different song under a different CEO implementing a completely different structure. Pay attention to 2013'ish till now.. Actually, go read up on Satya Nadella, and then understand why most divisions at Microsoft sing a different tune... Not just Xbox.
I read it for a long time. But It still doesn't make any sense.
Didn't he also tell female employees that they should consider "good karma" an acceptable substitute to make up for their pay disparity? Why yes, yes he did. http://money.cnn.com/2014/1...
It's entirely possible. I mean, they have made it clear that they would, eventually, like to have Xbox be a service, and not a console. However, I'm not sure if that is the road that the gaming community wants to go down, as a whole, considering the PS4 is turning out PS2 numbers. Seems like gamers would prefer gaming remain how it's been since inception. New hardware after a reasonable number of years, and a stellar gaming library.
Just Bring on the X time to get back to Forza Horizon 3
Is it possible to change gaming from a position of irrelevancy?
Like the Wii U and now the Switch?
The only change I see from M$ is that they can't catch up to the competition
Microsoft is a cancer on gaming market.
I think the new MS approach will be to release future consoles with compatibility to the previous one, meaning X will play the next console's games. They have hinted at forward compatibility and I think it would change gaming. That way when the next gen comes, people who have the X will be able to play the new games at reduced resolution and people who don't have a 4k tv can pick up the X at mass market price to play the games.
That would hold back each gen. It would also make the next Xbox more irrelevant than the current on.
They already changed it, they lost their way for a bit but now they're back and better than ever with by FAR the most powerful console on the market again.
LOL NO! The only thing they do is destroy the gaming industry.
Lucas White seems confused by much more then just the gaming industry.
they are changing demographics, not gaming
Yes, they are. For the worse. Never wished a console manufacturer bad in my life until Microsoft released the Xbox. Bad for the consumer all round and people ate it up like chocolate... Chocolate filled with poison. Between them and the big AAA publishers, they've ritualistically tried to kill gaming through greed. And no, making money as a business is one thing, fucking over your customers for every penny is definitely greed.
In seventeen years as a fan , I can say without a doubt that I have never been Screwed over at all.
Did u buy a launch Xbox one?
@Steveoreno1 all my Xbox have been day launch Xboxs .
They're trying to earn some more money, that's all.
They introduced online gaming on consoles to the mainstream gaming market. They were the first to include HDDs in consoles. They introduced Achievements. They were pushing DLCs, digital distribution (for games and movies) and were the first console manufacturer to have netflix on their system. They revolutionised FPS on consoles with Halo CE. I think they did change the industry.
They are trying to put Sony out of business by copying them.
You mean how MS copied achievements or an online Fee for MP , how MS copied internet connection , internal hard drive or even how MS raced to release an mid gen upgrade like XB1X or how MS copied sharing it's games with PC and how MS now allows External HDD to be used. My God imagine that but flip it around and who's being copying will be evident .
youre really stretching, not to mention most of that stuff was done elsewhere first (except charging for online, congrats Microsoft...)
Paying for online will forever be Microsofts fault and the idiots that thought it was a good idea and supported the movement smh...
Oh boy… Some people take this so seriously. Can I remind them, “it’s videogames stupid!” Some of the comments I’ve skimmed are droning on and on about Trojan horse, DLC, paid online, chasing apple and even the Zune for goodness sake. Listen, the first system I had was a NES, thanks to my parents. Mario was fun and my siblings and I would play it. We rented the sequels from the video store later when they came out like Mario 2 and Mario 3 and enjoyed the Disney games like Ducktales and chip n dale. And eventually, probably like everyone else with a NES we ended up with one of those 120 games on a cartridge and played a bunch of great games like pinball, ice climbers, popeye, islander etc. Later, I wanted a genesis for xmas. I was a bit older. Liked that it was black, instead of the square 2 button controller of NES, genesis had cool boomerang shape and A,B,C buttons! Sonic, Eternal Champions, x-men, maximum carnage, vector man were all good games. Oh, and the mortal kombat had blood. I had a Saturn, played Daytona and Virtual fighter, but not much else to play. It sucked so traded it in and got a N64. It never played orcarina on it and ony had Mario 64 for a weekend. But I had diddy kong racing and enjoyed the wcw wrestling games, but my experience with it largely sucked too. (notice I didn’t say the system did, but my experience. At that time it wasn’t easy to pull up video reviews and metacritic scores or amazon to find the best games. You bought what the store had) I got a ps2 later, because it played DVDs and gran turismo and GTA were fun. God of war as well. Got a game cube for RE4, eternal darkness and ended up liking animal crossing too. Got original xbox to try halo and fable and Shenmue (since I missed dreamcast). PS3 was my favorite system at the time, bested everything that came before it. It played blu rays. I got it with mgs 4 then fell in love with uncharted. 360 was next. Once the red ring issues were resolved I got one to play mass effect. Loved it, it became my new favorite franchise over uncharted. Got to play alan wake, gears of war and experienced the great indies that showed up like Splosion man, shadow complex, braid, limbo, geometry wars. Got a wii, didn’t care for wii sports, but loved the Mario galaxy’s, DKC returns, and the Kirby games. Oh and the return of 2d Mario with 4 player co op! Got a wii u for some HD Nintendo goodness. Mario, donkey kong in HD and Mario kart 8. Bayonetta 2 was a nice extra. Finally I got a ps4 because of loving ps3. And wanted to play the new games in franchises like uncharted and god of war. Horizon was nice too and shadow of Mordor. Got an xbox one because of backward compatibility I traded in the 360. It’s been great. It’s my 4k hdr blu ray player as well as I got the new halos, gears and forza horizon 3. And the new things they did like sunset over drive and quantum break. And very very recently. Still in the box unopened I got a switch. It’s a xmas gift for my daughter so it’s hiding in a closet until xmas. Long story short, if the games on xbox interest you then buy one and enjoy. If not, then don’t buy one and STFU.
Microsoft has been nothing but innovative since first launch. Thank Microsoft for Trophies. Thank Microsoft for internal Hard Drives. Thank Microsoft for Background Music/ Custom Soundtracks in games Thank Microsoft for online gaming being as big as it is on console Thank Microsoft for pioneering streaming services like Netflix on console Thank Microsoft for Dashboard upgrades Thank Microsoft for the triggers on the Dual Shock 4 Thank Microsoft for the upcoming "Intelligent Delivery" to cut down hard drive space and download time when Sony tries to create their own version of the software If you're not biased, there's alot of great things that Microsoft has done for the gaming industry.
Hmm. I don't think all of your list are +ve, but some are. Fair comment.
Yup, they've been trying to make it acceptable to not raise the bar while making excuses, meanwhile Sony throwing down. I even see Nintendo switching it up a little. I mean I gave xbox two generations to impress me...im done with em personally and I just hope their faults dont become a habit to anyone else.
If they are they must be trying to make it suck because I've seen nothing but suck coming from Microsoft for the past 2 years. Gears and Forza doesn't cut it.
Microsoft is trying to destroy the console generations format because they can't win one, Microsoft dreams destroying the singleplayer games because they can't get one of success. This is what Microsoft does, destroys the ground because it can't build success
They make the most powerful console every gen yet they still never come in first place. lol.
