I honestly don't know why they are still even bothering, clearly they have no interest in console gaming, all they want is to be steam and take their cut from everyone elses games. They honestly should of made the 1x just a steam machine competitor that could also play all xbox1 and 360 discs too. That is obviously the market they are aiming for, but they are hindered by being built around the closed hardware model of console gaming. Its not like the ever did console gaming GOOD anyways they've just gotten lucky in timing on their first 2 systems to get a break (Sega dying and giving them a ton of games like jet grind radio and shemue 2) and the 360 coming first and so getting bioshock and mass effect

I think the closed model of console gaming has helped xbox. They tried to compete with steam and it was way worse than ps4 vs xbox one. Many pc gamers avoid microsoft store and games that release on ms store vs steam will sell will be like 95%-5% in favor of steam. On console they can charge to play online and get a cut of any 3rd party game that sell on xbox, but on pc they got nothing from "exclusives" like mass effect or bioshock

When Steam first released its games in early years did it not face issues?

I do wonder though if PC publishers will move to the MS Store and the Universal Windows Platform over time as their system is moving to a non-Win32 binary. It will make pirating and cheat on PC much more difficult. Not sure I want that but I am curious. Although their solution could ultimately be worse for the consumer in the long run. I don't really have much faith or trust in MS.

As said very well before me, Ive always felt like the Xbox brand was a trojan horse backdoor into the services industry to compete with Apple and now Steam. It shows very well in Microsofts lack of enthusiasm in creating first party studios and games. Microsoft has a leg up on Steam, as they have a huge hardware following to fund their software service ambitions. Whereas Gabe and Steam did it backwards and couldnt get the hardware to take in any meaningful way.

If you look back 20 years, Microsoft has been chasing everything Apple has done... You can see it with their OS, then with Zune and the Windows Phone, Surface and Xbox Live. Trying to cash in on others successes. They have never been able to catch Apples golden goose. Though, I think they may very well be able to compete with Steam. Since they do have a dedicated hardware following and Live subscribers. Now, they just need to be able to compete with Steams sales... which are unbelievable!

Whether you want to believe it or not, this isnt a kick on Microsoft. They are a business that is trying their best to expand, catch up to and compete with some of the best and most successful companies on the planet. And, I believe that if they can pull it off... its going to make the Xbox brand incredible, as Xbox gamers could have the entire history of PC games to pull from and play. Though, my only question about the Xboxs future is... What form will it take? Will it still be the console so many know and love? Or, will it be a service like Steam and you build your own PC? Taking it out of the console market, at least as we know it, altogether.

An iterative console isn't going to dramatically change the industry

First, I'm going to say that some of the gamers above have impressed me with their knowledge of what's going on. No one usually speaks of what Microsoft's is trying to do in the threads except me. But they know what's going on. Which is great. I even spoke of this today about Microsoft.

Microsoft wants to be the guy in the background collecting checks. Nothing more. Just like Steam. Games running on their OS, programmed in windows creator update, running physics that they bought recently with Havok, wants developers to use symplygon, a 3D optimization tool that developers used that they bought as well, and if it's AR or VR, running on windows headsets that they are flooding the market with to do their typical EMBRACE, EXTEND, EXTINGUISH strategy they always implement to monopolize a product category
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/...

The company hasn't changed and just puts on a pretty face. Nice guy Phil is just trying a different approach. As for the article, it mentions Sony and cross play, but Sony has been doing that since **FINAL FANTASY XI on.... Wait for it... Wait.. For it...*** ((((PS2))))***

Sony didn't start cross play with SF5 or Rocket League this gen. They have been doing it for years. They asked Microsoft and Microsoft said no. Now they want to play nice after getting their @$$#$ kicked by PS4 and Sony. Talking all that crap last gen and part of its fan base said Sony was arrogant with PS3. Phil, Aaron, Larry, Peter, and developers like Turn 10 were so arrogant, that it made Sony look like saints. Now they talk about 3rd party deals as being bad but still do it to this day like the whole of last gen.

Microsoft will lie(can't just flip a switch), mislead(Kinect) and manipulate (not say scalebound was canceled until after holiday sales of Xbox one) to get what they want. You can't trust them when they want to own everything and close down developers like EA does. Who else will they try and buy? Phys-X?

"Sony didn't start cross play with SF5 or Rocket League this gen. They have been doing it for years. They asked Microsoft and Microsoft said no."

Nintendo wanted to do crossplay and Sony said no for Pure Chess too, so what's the problem there, Nintendo didn't say yes many years ago to work together before the PS1?

"You can't trust them when they want to own everything and close down developers like EA does."

Sony didn't close down Evolution and Liverpool?

"Microsoft wants to be the guy in the background collecting checks. Nothing more. Just like Steam"

Microsoft may not make as many games as you would like but they still make a lot more than Valve. Sony and Nintendo likes closed walls, it's their bread and butter. Microsoft sees Xbox as part of Windows aso their priorities are different. Yes they need to invest more but to suggest they are just Steam and want VR to be locked to them is hyperbole (you think Microsoft wants to monopolize the VR market which is just silly and shows how much you don't like the company).

"Talking all that crap last gen and part of its fan base said Sony was arrogant with PS3. Phil, Aaron, Larry, Peter, and developers like Turn 10 were so arrogant, that it made Sony look like saints"

Sony didn't call the Xbox 360 a Xbox 1.5? Now that Sony is arrogant again (not wanting to allow its users to do console crossplay, choose EA Access) it's no longer an issue? Turn 10 wasn't arrogant, they gave credit to Polyphony and just said that the torch was passed on and reviews showed they were right and Polyphony hasn't been the pinncale developer since GT3.

It's ok, we get it. You think everyone is a hater who says things you don't like about games like GT Sport then go on to attack Forza 7 and act like you're just being constructive. Your relations with Sony has made you see Microsoft as the enemy. I don';t blame you, it's in their culture. We see it all the time. Even look at crossplay and so many don't want to help Microsoft or think it's all about Microsoft pushing it and not the developers. Every instance Sony may not be the most consumer freindly and its Microsoft to blame.

UCForce52d ago

Microsoft is consumers friendly, oh really ? I don't need to say it twice about Sony and Microsoft. But calling Microsoft consumers friendly is wrong. Oh man, you are so predictable. Microsoft only doing this because they want to win Console War by doing opposite. If Sony lose Console War, you know MS will change their attitude toward consumers. And N4G is a conquest zone and every fanboys will take it.

Trez123452d ago

" their culture". What's your culture then ? let me guess...yes to everything Microsoft ? I moved from having the 360 as my main to ps4, so what's my culture ?

The fact is Microsoft was the enemy for most gamers at the start of this gen and rightly so if you ask me. Share play is minor compared to what they tried to force on us which was purely down to greed and nothing else. In fact, they should've been your enemy too since you pretend to be this unbias gamer but i know better.

If you really wanna help the xbox brand, stop talking nonesense and let them continue their way to recovery ( theyre doing a decent job so far) but make no mistake, they deserved the reaction they got from gamers.

"Microsoft only doing this because they want to win Console War by doing opposite."

Good, glad you finally admit they are being much more consumer friendly because I care about now, not what ifs.

ShadowWolf71252d ago

For a guy that supposedly doesn't even own an Xbox, you sure do worship them and bash Sony every shot you get, man.

Idk, seems you do indeed have a dog in this fight, so to speak.
