Is Cuphead a True Gaming Phenomenon?

Cuphead has captured the hearts and minds of the gaming industry, as we all awaited its release with baited breath. And while many saw its sudden explosion onto the scene as a true gaming phenomenon, some hopefuls seem disappointed. This begs the question; is Cuphead too tough to become a true classic?

A game can never be too tough to be a classic. Many still revere Contra to this day, to the point that its Konami Code has become a great part of pop culture

Cuphead is the current gen game made to look like a classic, that IS destined to be a true classic. It's simple but it's creative, its hard but its fair, its a short game but it takes a long, long time to master, its frustrating but it is FUN.

I will admit though it's not a game for casuals who don't like difficulty, and although it looks so inviting as if it were some Disney game, it's not a relaxing "just have fun" type of game that young kids will enjoy...but this is also why it feels so special.

Not for me. I completed several MM titles. Of course, I was young then. That may be all it is.

I'm happy for their success. I'm happy for the people who enjoy the game. But I'm one of the crowd left outside the party. Sorry, it's too difficult for me, and I can't get enough contiguous seconds of gameplay to form an opinion about how great it might be. I wonder if Cuphead is the culmination of this fad--this throwback to the brutal difficulty necessary only on the primitive systems of the 80s. The lack of memory and storage space made a grueling grind necessary to make the experiences last long enough back then. It isn't necessary now. It's clearly trying to be a throwback, with its intentionally limited aiming mechanics. Given all the praise it has received, I guess it has done so brilliantly. I just wish I could join in the celebration.

Is Dark Souls difficutly unnecessary as well?
Is any game that one finds drastically difficult a throwback?

I think the art style is a throw back but the difficulty is completely intentional and part of what made older games great. The sense of acheivement they gave you is still unmatched.

I hear what you're saying but you just got to grind for awhile until you get the hang of it. I think you are giving up a lil too early. Break down each Boss, each stage into small parts and learn the patterns, when you take a hit that you didnt understand how to avoid, just restart over and over again until you feel comfortable, then move on. Trust me, I died alot and then something "clicked" and I could see the attacks coming ahead of time, I even taught my daughter (who really sucks at games in general, but don't tell her that) to be patient and just try to learn, problem solve on how she could do something different, eventually she beat the 1st run and gun stage and now she thinks she owns the world. I really like that about this game.

I'm a gamer. If it's interesting, i'll play. Never care about difficulty. Not a competitive player though. As long as the game is interesting, i will keep playing.
