Super Mario Odyssey Reminds Us Why We Love Mario | Engadget

Super Mario Odyssey is everything a Mario fan could want.

Super Mario Odyssey is the most exciting Mario game in years. Sure, the two Galaxy entries on the Wii were inventive, but Nintendo's first Switch game in the series goes a step further and completely changes the way you've come to know Mario. It introduces entirely new powers and customizable outfits, and it brings Mario into strange new worlds. Simply put, it's precisely the Mario entry Nintendo needs right now -- one that'll satisfy longtime fans and entice new Switch owners.

Super Mario Odyssey continues the legacy of Mario 64, a game that will forever be remembered as a pioneering 3D platform. This time around, though, the environments are much bigger than before, with plenty of nooks and crannies to explore. Unlike the round, self-contained worlds from the Galaxy games, every world in Odyssey feels rich and expansive.

Inevitable review scores: https://i.imgur.com/8ey60fY...

EDIT: On a side note it's interesting to me that different people compare it to different Mario games. This contrasts the game with Galaxy in one of the earlier paragraphs and compares it to 64. I've seen others say it closely reminds them of Galaxy. Whereas there's others that compare it to Sunshine and I've even see people say it reminds them of 3D World.

It seems to take some of the best elements from all of them and bring them together. I think we're in for a real treat with this game.

I don't need to be reminded

mcstorm2403d ago

I'm the same I also don't recall a bad Mario game in terms of a main Mario game.

The_Jackel2404d ago

can not wait to play this :)

Mario games are always groundbreaking. On the surface its the same formula, but it always offer something new, revolutionary

The 10th Rider2404d ago

Which is insane. Almost every 3D mainline Mario game I look at it and wonder how they could top it, and what they could come up with that's more bonkers than their last game . . . Somehow every single time they manage to come up with something surprisingly new. Even though SMG2 felt new and fresh despite how similar it looked on the surface.

ChickeyCantor2403d ago (Edited 2403d ago )

I would say it's innovative in it's own domain. Groundbreaking or revolutionary would imply in a way that it would be the standard going forward. And possesion wouldn't really be a ground breaking nor revolutionary.

And I agree, Nintendo knows how to polish their gameplay with art. Even if the art can look primitive, it's definitely stylized.

Ill take Windwaker graphics over call of duty any day.

ChickeyCantor2404d ago (Edited 2404d ago )

I wouldn't say groundbreaking or revolutionary.

What they do instead is make very polished games. They nail the mechanics and add a snappy flair to.
I'm not saying this is a bad game, not at all. I just wouldn't call it revolutionary or ground breaking.

Games that come to mind are Kirby and Metal Arm : Glitch in the system.

The 10th Rider2403d ago

Groundbreaking or revolutionary isn't really the right word. However I would say that each mainline 3D Mario game manages to take the same core gameplay and somehow refines it (even though the previous game felt perfect) while also making it feel fresh and new. It's weird because 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and now seemingly Odyssey all feel revolutionary while still having the same core gameplay. There's nothing about the gameplay that's revolutionary itself, but they manage to bring the level design and everything together in such a way that it feels like it is.

I still can't get over how good Kingdom Battle is as I approach the final boss! Like 9/10 must play imo, seriously!!!! Ubisoft killed it.

To think I get to play Super Mario Odyssey next month after this.....

My top 3 are Mario 3, Mario World and Mario 64. Mario Odyssey is also excellent, and I enjoyed Sunshine but didn't care for the Galaxy series.

Animal crossing came out the week the entire world shutdown. Yeah I bought it.

kevco3370d ago

Agreed. I think a lot of the AC: H sales have to do with early lockdown players!

I mean, I would've played it anyway. But I guess there's a lot of people who got into it because of the hype and their new found free time!

DivineHand12570d ago

Nintendo made out like bandits with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's the same game that was on the WiiU except they added 2 item boxes like in double dash.

kevco3370d ago

It's the Capcom method:

1. Add a new word to the end of the title and features that should've been expected first time around.
2. Charge full price for it.
3. Profit.

this is why i always say that Nintendo will always be fine. look at those numbers lol

and those are all first party games.
