In terms of storytelling, Bioshock elevated the medium. It was one of the first waves of near movie quality stories and while it did kinda hold your hand, it also opened up to exploration in tune with upgrading your capabilities :D

It will be enshrined as a classic and remember for what it added to the relevant genres.
Considering that the game (and trilogy) is still better in almost every respect than 90% of the games that have been released since and is an influence upon and a standard by which many games are measured, then yes, absolutely, of course it still matters. It is still one of the industry's finest masterpieces.
