Assassin's Creed Origins Interview Reveals "Desert Overheat" System and Underwater Tombs

In an in-depth and lengthy interview with AusGamers, Assassin's Creed Origins lead Ashraf Ismail reveals there'll be a "desert overheat" system, likely to feature mirages and tricks of the mind:

"So we have this thing called ‘Desert Overheat’, which is a system that is meant to... the idea is when you are being consumed by the heat that you see, like, a lot of effects. [So] you start really falling into some kind of haze. We had to tone it down for the demo because that wasn't the purpose of the demo. We left a little bit of it on, which was that shimmer.

When it's on and you're in the middle of the desert and you're lost in the desert, it's fucking awesome."

He also mentioned, at depth, that underwater content was both seamless and important, particularly for exploration and access to hidden areas:

"... In terms of the underwater specifically, Egypt was actually lush with water at that time period, and so it was natural for us that we needed to be able to seamlessly go through it. And that there are opportunities and advantages for those people to explore the underwater. So there are underwater tombs. There are sunken temples. There are wells that you use to sneak into forts. So there's a lot that can be done with the water."

The full interview features much, much more.

I applaud Their effort to try and make this more than just a vanilla AC. The RPG elements, including exploration, make this one of my most anticipated action games in a very long time. They seem to put a concerted effort into trying to make this a game where you would want to come back and see what would you would run in to next. A very rich and beautiful wild world for you to tame.

I agree with everything you just said. I'm super hyped for this and already have the deluxe edition preordered and almost paid off

Jakens2444d ago

So so good, I don't want to miss it.

cooperdnizzle2443d ago

Hype job. Combat is a clear rip off of souls. All the money in the world still can't make Ubi great developers. The new EA without a doubt

billythepunk2443d ago

Soooo South Park was a dud game, and the new one will be dud too? Or Rainbow Six is just a pedestrian 'safe' multiplayer offering? Oh, and that divisive Far Cry 5 game with all its interesting, new ideas is 100% a bad direction, right? Also, if the combat is awesome in Souls, and the previous AC combat didn't live up to the setting of the game, doesn't make sense to take inspiration? By your logic every game that has since started utilising Batman: Arkham combat is a "hype job" as well.

cooperdnizzle2443d ago (Edited 2443d ago )

No the combat alone doesn't make it a hype job. The game is just a hype job. They have all the money in the world to innovate yet they have to rip off other games, they release broken games more often than not, they hype every game with PR bull crap and downgrade more than any other publisher. The "your logic" arguement is way to played out. I wrote two lines. I simply stated a reason on top of a long list of reasons that plagues ubi. Sure they make some good games along the way but they pretty much screw the pooch on most

10 Video Game Sequels That Saved Their Franchise

Video game sequels like Assassin's Creed Origins, Doom (2016), and Fire Emblem Awakening were just what these franchises needed to be revitalized.

Immagaiden355d ago

Lmao what’s Halo Infinite doing on this list?

Who would ever say Halo Infinite saved the Halo franchise

SullysCigar354d ago

Thought the same - very bizarre!

RE7 though... my God, what a shift over RE6! That franchise was definitely going in the wrong direction, so RE7 was a welcome return to form.

ModsDoBetter354d ago

Resi 6 was and still is the worst entry in the series.
7 was a great turnaround, despite people’s concerned about the switch to FP perspective.

DMC5 definitely helped the franchise after the whole DmC debacle. Whilst it was a decent action game, it was a far cry from the series and the characters we knew.

AC Origins is my favourite in the entire AC series. Despite the switch to a more RPG style of gameplay - the setting, soundtrack, length, etc were all amazing. sadly followed up by the ridiculously long and “more of the same” Odsyssey.

I don’t feel it’s fair to say the franchise slipped with Doom 3, Doom 3 was incredibly atmospheric and took the game in a different direction but there’s no denying Doom (2016) was sensational.

Halo 4 & 5 were disappointing but Halo Infinite definitely didn’t save the franchise? What?

TheEnigma313354d ago (Edited 354d ago )

I'm going to have to go with SMB 3. I was around when SMB 2 first came out and people hated it. 3 is still arguably the best mario game created.

HellspawnPR1981354d ago

"Halo Infinite"? Worse Halo ever. Whoever made this list just lost all credibility.

Hofstaderman354d ago

In future lists of a similar nature I have a suspicion Final Fantasy XVI will feature.

Historically accurate from the past is tough to truly know and judge especially the farther you go back because history is written from the people in power and doesn’t mean it’s the truth just the narrative they wanted to tell.

I don’t care about historically accurate in most games because they are games not biographies or history books . Just make the game fun , good gameplay and such .

Ghost of Tsushima wasn’t historically accurate in many things but I loved the game . Many examples like it .
