With 63.3 million systems shipped worldwide, Sony could have a new top dog on its hands.
PS4 had a far better start than PS2, but now it's selling on par with it in the same timeframe. With this in mind I don't think PS4 may outsell PS2 in the longterm, but may still be possible
I predict PS4 will be their 2nd best selling console with an output of roughly 125 million units worldwide (pro, slim and og combined). PS5 will launch in 2019 (earliest) or 2020 and contribute to the PS4 not surpassing the PS2 as people switch gears to pick up the 10tf PS5 for a low price of $499.99.
The thing is I believe the PS4 Pro is going to carry into the PS5 gen and will be the new base model until 2023 or 2024 when a PS5 Pro is released in which time the PS5 will become the base model. It is obvious that Sony wants a smoother transition into next gen which is why they opted for the mid gen upgrade route. The PS4 Pro is really is Sony's first foot into PS5 gen. This is all due to the fact that they cant have gens that last more than 6 years with the same hardware because of how fast tech is changing but at the same time don't want to cut gens to just 3 years because it will not only be expensive for them but also to devs and gamers. This is new model is the best soltuion they can come up with. Next gen when the PS5 is out the PS4 Pro will be fully unleashed so we are going to see games on it doing as standard 4k while the PS5 will do 4k native and perhaps 60fps standard with much better VR.
PS5 will without a doubt launch 2019. That's when AMD's Navi and 7nm will be ready for mass production.
i would be very surprised if the ps4 did better than ps2. if the ps4 did over 110m, it would be pretty good. 10tf PS5... i suspect they would need more than that. i think next round Xbox won't be mucking about.
I hope it does become so he's put on console. They truly do deserve the success they released an absolutely phenomenal machine
I don't think it will reach the PS2 total sales of 150m+ because of the way this console generation has been shortened, but it should easily get past the 100m mark and that in itself is a fantastic achievement, plus utterly shredding the competition.
let the xoxbox be an utter disappointment and we may see the 150+ million units sold. just kidding.
Why do you think this gen has been shortened? Couldnt the mid gen upgrade give it more legs so to speak on the opposite?
Shortened? PS1-PS2 was 6 years, PS2-PS3 was 6 years. Considering PS3-PS4 was 7 years it's been expanded if anything. It won't reach PS2 sales because of a change in market. First of all, the economy sucks. Adjusted for inflation we should be able to afford $499/$599 consoles at the moment, but we can't. So we're paying more for less of a jump, and we're kind of used to that now. We place more faith in AAA developers to cover the difference, and they have been. Secondly AAA market is different. During PS2 days AA/AAA games looked much alike. Considering AAA these days requires far more attention to detail, we've got less games on that level.
"the way this console generation has been shortened" ? PS2 kept selling after PS3 released. It didn't just keep selling only between generations. PS4 very much can keep selling in other countries long after PS5 comes out, at $199 or even lower etc
If PS 5 comes out in 2019 I don't see ps4 surpassing PS2 .
When the ps3 was released the ps2 was still supported and sold for years after. How do you think it sold 150mil in the first place ? Ps4 is going to be supported after the ps5 release ...
After GOD OF WAR, LAST OF US 2, DEATH STRANDING,and SPIDERMAN releases then we should have another article on this.
Switch sales will probably come closer to what Wii sold than PS4 sales will to what PS2 sold.
No way; the Switch will be lucky to get 50m. It's already slowed down a lot.
Slowed down as in it's in stock now? Don't underestimate the switch done amazingly well with new Zelda and more Wii U ports Mario Kart is amazing Splatoon looks cool but Arms is only NEW game Zelda does look fantastic tho (it's in the backlog) it's all about that new Mario for me tho, smash Bros port would be great then Metroid 4 or the big system seller Pokemon Switch sometime in next 12-18 months or so.... sold out for months as let's face it Nintendo are due a direct soon end of Aug/September let us know what's coming for Christmas and early 2018 which Switch and my PS4 it's gonna be a good gaming season.
@Ros- "the switch done amazingly well with new Zelda and more Wii U ports Mario Kart is amazing Splatoon looks cool but Arms is only NEW game Zelda does look fantastic tho" Ok....how much of this is going to get someone to buy a Switch that didn't already own a 3DS or Wii U? In order to BEAT Wii sales, they must GAIN new consumers. All the titles you named are right in the heart of what MOST Nintendo gamers would buy. Sooooo most of those gamers bought Wii U and 3DS, why would MORE buy Switch? For Zelda and Mario Kart? Wait, what? For titles that are on Wii U? For games that NINTENDO FANS already know? That doesn't sound like a concept that will sell more then Wii U or 3DS, that simply sounds like a concept that will sell...JUST as much people to Switch as 3DS and Wii U did... Thats it. I don't see any more people buying Switch, then I do Wii U and 3DS combined, I actually see less based on how things have been going for them. Your are asking Nintendo fans, to buy Nintendo stuff....thats it. You are not even looking at the idea that the same stuff, is selling to the SAME PEOPLE! That is like saying, "Man, Acitivsion is going to do HAM, I see them selling MORE" (Starts the list the SAME IP that failed to sell them more the years prior) How can they grow selling to the same install base? Wii U had LOTS of great games bud, you are just repeating the same damn games that failed to sell Wii U. Thus, I can ONLY see this selling under what Wii U and 3DS sold COMBINED, based on them selling less every gen, I can only assume they will continue to sell less. But hey, the new Call Of Duty is coming out bro, this year will be different then last year /s
@edmix The switch is a much more attractive console than Wii U. Its really what the wii u should have been. The advertisement and communication from nintendo about the Wii U is often considered one of the main reasons it failed. The Switch's advertising has been pretty damn good, and it only just got its first real first party exclusive last week. Also predicting that it would sell less than 3DS+Wii U isnt bold - thats just saying <80 million units which is pretty much certain.
LOL RosweeSon talks like "Wii U ports" are an indication of a good console! Enjoy your last-gen ports no one wanted (If people wanted them, they would have bought a Wii U); the rest of us will play Horizon, Spiderman, Bloodborne, TLoU2, Uncharted, Detroit, and dozens of other games that are not on any other console (or PC).
No. OT: I expect a fantastic 120-130m for PS4. Not quite PS2 levels, but higher than just about every other console.
The Nintendo Switchcast.
I bet you posted that just to trigger people. Lol In case you seriously meant that I will point out some things. Switch sales are nothing extraordinary. It sold only 1.97 million in the last quarter with all the launch period hype whereas PS4 sold 3.3 million even this late in its life cycle. The narrative that "Switch is a sales phenomenon" nothing more than a media and marketing propaganda which has got nothing to do with the reality. The "stock shortages" are there to further fuel this narrative and make people think it is some massive hit product that they need to buy. However, the latest figures released by Nintendo made a lot of people realize the reality.
Switch will sell double what Wii U sold and that's it. It's getting nowhere near Wii sales.
You wish lol. PS4 is already ahead of PS2 concurrently. At this rate PS4 could be the best ever.
Mathematically that is just unlikely. Wii U + 3DS sales don't come CLOSE to Wii. They barely come close to PSP... In order for Switch to move Wii numbers, they must GROW their install base, ie make something that gets someone to buy a Nintendo product, that they would otherwise have NOT! What are they making that non-Nintendo gamers would buy? ARMS? Splatoon? If you don't like COD, giving you more COD or a different shooter isn't going to change your mind. So ,can Call Of Duty do something to grow its install base of fans ,simply by releasing more of the same thing? Do you folks really not question this?
Right now the PS4 is outselling the Switch at over a 2:1 ratio. Typically Nintendo gens are incredibly front-loaded, and so Switch will be lucky to hit 40 million (more likely 30 - 35m).
This is the big problem with Switch - https://www.finder.com.au/1... Too many of its potential audience have left the industry for mobiles.
Why in every section where the ps4 gets good news we have a dumbass emo hipster switchtard or the same lowlife slam dunked butthurt XBOT dropout spewing fanboygasms? For example: FallenAngel19841 "Switch sales will probably come closer to what Wii sold than PS4 sales will to what PS2 sold." Do you know why the PS4 is doing so great? It's because they focus on great games, service and current trend technology instead of being a backward company. Yes there are great games in every console, what we don't like is these imbecile posts trying to undermine the success of other consoles? You want to know do you? Simple, get a ps4 and see for yourself why.
PS2 2.0, no it's time to go further beyond.
150mil is a pretty tall order. the PS2 didn't have competition back then. but now, even with over 2:1 ratio, MS have the power to still get multiplats with the PS4. so, unless there are PS2 type domination, outselling the PS2 will be out the question for now
To a level even further beyond that? Like double Acsended?!!! You must be bluffing
Proceeds to transform
Congratulations Sony on decimating the competition.

It is well deserved if it does. Their consistency and quality is unmatched this gen.
With all the amazing exclusives and games on PS4 it's no surprise it's selling so well. Will be interesting to see if it actually sells more than PS2, not an easy task
It is a bit of a surprise isn't it? I mean the same thing could have been said about PS3. Amazing exclusives and games. Don't forget PS3 had and exclusive metal gear. And fresh IPs like uncharted that was new. And infamous. And heavenly sword. Heavy rain. And less popular tittles like folklore. Even poorly reviewed ones like lair. It makes me wonder how much of the PS4 success was due to Microsoft's blunder. Becuase just the other day I was talking to a guy and he said he loves Xbox. Had the 360 and loved gears but this gem when he heard about always online he got a PS4. Makes you wonder.
"It makes me wonder how much of the PS4 success was due to Microsoft's blunder" People don't buy things by default or spite. ie, someone isn't buying something, based on a DIFFERENT company. They buy things they want, they buy things they want to play. PS3 outsold 360 even a year late, more expensive and even with losing key support, ie Final Fantasy, Tekken, GTA etc stopped being exclusive to PS that gen. So, PS4 is selling a lot because of what the did with PS3. They came out with games consistently where MS legit stopped coming out a with games a few years before XONE came and just kept doing timed releases. So when you are showing, Resistance Fall Of Man new IP Infamous new IP Motorstorm new IP Little Big Planet new IP Uncharted new IP The Last Of Us new IP Demon Souls new IP Heavy Rain new IP etc Who do you think is going to side with you next gen? Clearly folks who bought 360, might of had buyers remorse when looking at PS3's BEAST line up of NEW SERIES. MS lost Bungie that gen, lost Bizarre Creations, lost the Mass Effect property and a host of timed games. Sooooo basically the only huge new IP that came from MS last gen was Gears Of War and Crackdown.... Mind you, MS only bought the Gears Of War IP, THIS GEN! Soooo understand, that people may have bought 360 based on what they believed would be a slam dunk gen, but when those titles kept going to PS3 month after month and MS kept losing teams and exclusives....clearly that excitement wears off. Sony's new exclusive series didn't. They didn't go to 360. What Sony did with PS3, gave people a insight into what they will do with PS4, as Sony has done this EVERY GEN. Before that, guess what? God Of War Jak and Daxter Ratchet Sly Killzone SingStar Rouge Galaxy Dark Cloud Ico the list goes on. Sony has PROVEN they make new IP as series....EVERY SINGLE GEN! Many might have thought it was a fluke with PS2, clearly over looked the PS3, clearly they get that this isn't an accident with PS4. THIS IS what they do every gen. This is why they've sold the most home consoles
Edmix, I'll disagree with your premise. you said people buy things they like. I don't think it comes down to people like Xbox or PlayStation. Most people are not brand loyal. They go with the best graphics, games, price etc. It comes down to People like video games. Last gen they had two great choices and sales reflect that split. This gen, because of Microsoft's awful reveal, consumers didn't see them as a great option and so more went with PlayStation. All things being equal. If ms didn't launch with a tv focus. And instead of added cost with hdmi input and Kinect they put more graphical power in the system. And if they never made that blunder with always online. They wouldn't have turned off as many customers and it isn't unlikely that they would have more sales as most people chose one console. But no one wanted what Microsoft was offering which is why they rolled it all back. If Xbox didn't have those undesirable policies more people would have chose it at the expense of PS4 sales. If you think I'm wrong. Imagine this. What if PS4 came with a camera people thought spied on you. What if PS4 focused on uncharted tv series at launch. What if PS4 ran games at a lower resolution AND required alway on online connection AND costed 100 more. And Xbox didn't have any of those negatives at launch. Do u think PS4 would have still sold as much? TL;DR All I'm saying is a lot of people like video games and buy one video game machine. Sales are split between the options. And if one company screws up bad the other company benifits by having greater sales. You're free to disagree with that ideology though.
I still say this won't happen. This gen will end before it has a chance to catch PS2. I believe it could mind you, but I think one of their criteria for launching PS5 will be being sure PS4 will pass 100 million. Other things will factor in when to end this gen of course, but I'd bet money that's one milestone they want to make sure they reach. Especially with them being able to say all but one of the home consoles to break 100 million is a playstation.
They are going to need to continue to sell the Ps4 years after the Ps5 launches to do this, the Ps2 was available well into the Ps3's life cycle. I doubt it over takes Ps2 people forget Sega existed the console hardware market during the Ps2 Launch year and xbox was still another year away and the gamecube wasnt selling well at all, that left two options PC and Ps2. Times are different now there is mobile, Nintendi, tablets, PC and Xbox to compete with. It will be hard to sell Ps2# especially as the Ps4 has about a year and half left in its life cycle. Congrats Sony but Ps4 selling Ps2# I think is a pipe dream
It will happen with PS4 too. They aren't suddenly drop support when PS5 comes out. Sony tend to support their consoles for quite a while tbh.
"They are going to need to continue to sell the Ps4 years after the Ps5 launches to do this, the Ps2 was available well into the Ps3's life cycle." Ok, so whats to "doubt"? We have more people in gaming now then 10 years ago, Sony is selling consoles in CHINA now, so you don't really know just how long this can continue for. Sony is known to keep their systems around for a long, long time. With PSN and more countries making games and more gamers this gen, then 10 years ago, we legit could be looking at them outselling the PS2. Everything is on board for that to happen bud.
The PS2 had the added benefit of selling very well into the PS3's cycle, due to the first couple years of the PS3 being a total travesty. I don't think the PS4 will have that advantage, since I don't we'll ever see another PS3-level issue come out of Playstation. I'm thinking around 130 million PS4's sold before Sony completely cuts manufacturing. Even still, those would be incredible numbers for an industry that was predicted to be going down the toilet a few years ago.
? PS1 sold into the PS2's life and PS2 was a success right out of the gate. People don't buy things by default. ie someone NOT buying a PS3, because of PS2, it makes no sense. If you bought a PS2 during the PS3 gen cause you couldn't afford a PS3....well....you could buy a PS3 DURING the PS4's gen if you feel the same way about PS2 late gen. It doesn't really explain the lost sale, in fact its suggesting that someone who likes PS2 and bought it late gen, would just do the same for PS3. So, irrelevant. I see PS4 likely outselling PS2 just based on China alone. You have no clue how long that system will get support by the Chinese in terms of developers and gamers a like.
I honestly don't have much faith in the Chinese market, due to their serious problems with bootlegs. Maybe that will change, but I still think it'll be a while longer before they start having a big affect on the global console market. Like I said, I'm very confident in PS4 and know it's going to do amazing numbers; I just don't want to outright claim it's going to be the best selling video game device ever.
Gen wont last that long for it to happen.
The PS2 sold the number it did well after the PS3 and 360 were out, the same can be for the PS4 when the PS5 comes out.
Depend. PS2 sold 30 million after PS3's launch because PS3 didn't have nearly as good of a launch as other PlayStation consoles. It's also very likely that PS5 will be 100% BC with PS4 software, which will definitely put a damper on PS4 sales if it manages to get strong next gen software out the gate as well.
Well deserved success. Sony gave us a great gaming machine. What more could we ask for?
It's a bit misleading though. The PS4 got a mid gen refresh with the PS4 Pro, the PS2 didn't get that. The PS2 went through it's lifespan with pretty much the same hardware from start to finish. A lot of people that bought an original PS4 will have upgraded to the PS4 Pro or will do so at some point, so a percentage of the sales will come from people who bought the console more than once. If there was no PS4 Pro and all of these sales were for the original PS4, then i think it would be a fair comparison.
The ps2 did get a few changes... It got slimmer and got a internal modem with the later versions of the fat... The slim sold a bunch more (that thing was insanely smaller than its original size)
It might beat the ps1. The ps2 is gonna be tough.
I like how the article totally ignores the fact, that the PS2 wasn't even released in NA or Europe for the first 10 / 11 months of its lifespan. That is something you should at least mention when you compare sales for the first 48 months against a console that had a global launch. But yeah, the PS2 won't be touched. Not this gen, not next gen.
It has the momentum to, and the games. But there's no way, simply because Microsoft will be pushing next gen to start asap and this one was a nightmare for them. Ps4 won't get the time it needs to pull it off.
It's definitely possible, but I'm going to say it'll be close. PS4 has a long way to go still. Off subject and to the left: I often wonder how good Sony would have done if Microsoft wouldn't have crashed out the gate; would it be such an overwhelming success? Either way, Sony played their hand well this generation, for the most part that is. They deserve their sales.
That's awesome. They delivered a great system designed to play games first. And supplied the system with great games in addition to strong 3rd party support. And as a result they earned many a gamer's dollar. Seems like devs and gamers alike were happy with the PS4. And thy also forced the competition to step their game up drastically.
PS4 is the true 'beast'.
No chance, The generation won't be long enough and sales will tail off fast after the release of a successor
Never happened to any PlayStation prior. No reason to think it will happen to the, current, fastest selling one.
It could beat the PS2, because for the casuals and parents. The PS4 will be more then enough in 2020 or 2021 and beyond.
Is this the same way Xbox one is tracking 360 🤔😂😂✌ 127995;
It probably wont hit 155 million, but it will easily pass 100 million and likely become the 2nd best selling home console.
Meh, my estimate for the PS4 is 100 - 110m. That would put it ahead of the PS3 and PS1, but still below the PS2.. This is because I think that while the PS4 will indeed continue to sell gangbusters for the next 2-3 years, I think its sales will plummet the second the PS5 comes out.
On track? Figured this had been done already
