Game visuals have been steadily improving since the beginning, while their audio tech gets left behind.
We've had uncompressed sound on consoles since 2006, and tons of PS3 games had 7.1 surround sound. Most people dont have the hardware to take advantage of improved sound, so it hasn't been pushed like graphics.

There's no problems with sound in today's games in my opinion it's pretty top-notch it's up there with the movies. Have a game sounds is all relative to the user experience it gives the gamer. I can tell you that many of my favorite video game soundtracks are from games that came out in the second half of the 1980s in the first half of the 1990s
