The Big Interview With Michael Pachter: “I Doubt Microsoft Is Selling The Xbox One X At A Loss”

The gaming market hasn’t been as interesting in years as it is right now. Sony has asserted its dominance entirely, and shows no signs of stopping or even slowing down on the back of a hugely exciting lineup of exclusives. Nintendo has struck back with the Switch, and it looks on pace to reclaim its position in the market. And Microsoft is doubling down for the launch of the Xbox One X later this year.

There's an incredible amount of value in that box for that price. It's not just about the hardware and the video game graphical settings but the services as well.. 4k blueray for movies, backwards compatibility and a much improved UI/console online system.. It even has a true sata 3 interface for SSD nuts like me who really want those extra 6 seconds every time I walk into a house in a Bethesda game.

..Other than the switch it's the only console that's come out in the last few years that's been able to impress me. And yes, I do mean the pro was horrible and I really wish it ended up being more rather than an upscale box that didn't deliver a Bloodborne patch because it's obvious they want to make some sort of 100 dollar remaster for the ps5 more popular.

Goldby445d ago

Sony making the pro had nothing to do with a pro patch for bloodborne. That's on From Software. Not Sony.

That's like being upset as MS when QB doesn't have an x patch

freshslicepizza445d ago (Edited 445d ago )

Who said QB won't have a patch in the future? Now please explain why Sony's own studios don't seem to be able to provide things like supersampling for 1080p owners? Even The Last of Us remastered had it then removed it. Other 1st party games don't even offer it like GT Sport and the MLB games. The fact is the XB1X is a lot better designed and will be quite a bit more powerful too. It will also improve existing games much more than the Boost mode provided on the PS4 Pro. Seems like Microsoft definitely knows how to upgrade properly.

Leave it to moldy to talk down about Sony. Never fails.

OT: Whether they're selling it at a loss or not, as long as the thing is a success, they should be happy with it. Just provide the necessary tools to make it a success.

Goldby445d ago

@Moldy

Why dont you explain how Ms is putting all of their eggs in the X1X basket instead of diversifying with....

whats the word, more 1st party studios?

they may be making the X1X better then the pro becuase they dont have the game lineup that Playstation does so they want to beat them in terms of specs. Personally, seeing as most X1X games are being advertised at checkerboard rendering, i'd go with the less powerful pro over the X1x as the pro has a bigger lineup and more games that suit my taste.

and has cross play

@LP-Eleven
"Leave it to moldy to talk down about Sony. Never fails."

And yet you mysteriously ignored his attempt to defend Bloodborne and using a game he has no idea if it will be patched or not, and who also always talks down about MS. Also ask yourself, why would I or anyone else upsell the PS4 Pro compared to the XB1X when the XB1X is clearly more powerful and better designed? The fact is Sony has done a terrible job marketing the Pro and given very little reason for 1080p owners to upgrade. The XB1X may be advertised as a 4K console but Microsoft is clearly showing it's engineering skills and it will also benefit 1080p owners more than the Pro.

@Goldby
"Why dont you explain how Ms is putting all of their eggs in the X1X basket instead of diversifying with...."

Who says they won't in the future? The XB1X is a midcycle upgrade, your argument is changing the subject. How convenient. This is going to be your go to card every topic comparing multiplatform titles. It's what you guys do, change the discussion to fit your own agendas so that the Xbox can never be better at anything over the Playstation.

"they may be making the X1X better then the pro becuase they dont have the game lineup that Playstation does so they want to beat them in terms of specs. That's your choice. Do you ask PC gamers why they upgrade their parts over 1st party titles?

"and has cross play"

Sony only does it with the PC, how ironic when they created the PS4 Pro to try and curb its users from going to the PC.

Goldby445d ago

How ironic that MS talks about cross play yet won't even make that mandatory for their windows 10/Xbox versions of games like infinite warefare.

You'd think if they would push that to make sure the windows 10 store become more attractive.

They are all talk and no action when it comes to cross play

@Goldby
"How ironic that MS talks about cross play yet won't even make that mandatory for their windows 10/Xbox versions of games like infinite warefare."

It's an Activision game, they have to enable the feature. Remote Play on the PS4 is not enabled for all games either, should we blame Sony for that too? Face it, Sony got called out on crossplay and they scambled and came across as anti-consumer more than 4theplayers. Now you guys want to deflect the negative attention they are getting, same old patterns.

"You'd think if they would push that to make sure the windows 10 store become more attractive. They are all talk and no action when it comes to cross play"

It's funny how you came into this topic to rant about everything you don't like about MS. Like I said, this is what you guys do. Any time something the Xbox may be better at you want to change the discussion to fit your own agendas or downplay it. The XB1X is better engineered, those are facts.

"They are all talk and no action when it comes to cross play"

That's hilarious given Sony's stance on crossplay for many years and when they get called on it they talk about how they were always for it but in reality it was just the PC, then suggest they will listen to developers, then say they want to protect its users, and finally admit it was all about stakeholders all aong. Go ask the makers of Rocket League about who talks and who actually delivers?

@Goldby
'"Why dont you explain how Ms is putting all of their eggs in the X1X basket instead of diversifying with...."

Who says they won't in the future?'

Because you stated that same exact abuse victim's hope when the XB1 was announce while the 360 faced a game drought? The same with the X1X too.

You've repeatedly hoped that in the long term that MS fixed short as well as long term issues, and aside from making new systems when the issue is games, they haven't yet.

So when Microsoft says it's up to developers to make full use of hardware it's fine. Sony says the same thing and it's bs. Gotcha.

trooper_445d ago

Ah, but you didn't know already? It's only okay when it's Microsoft!/s

Bobafret445d ago

I only have to read the first sentence of anyone's comment to know whether it will have tons of disagrees.

Godmars290446d ago (Edited 446d ago )

You know, or rather it's my experience, to bold the replies of the interviewed. Not the questions of the interviewer.

And Pachter's seems to be MS's: only looking at numbers. The big numbers.

Its not that one AAA sells 5 to 10 million making massive profit, cause those days are gone, but rather five sub-AAA sell a million each making enough of sequels or other projects. That's how a console, as a general gaming platform, has value.

Godmars290446d ago

"And Pachter's *ISSUE* seems to be MS's: only looking at numbers. The big numbers."

How am i missing words?!

Miss_Weeboo446d ago

Pachter says a lot of interesting things sometimes, all of them come true. He's never missed the mark, not once, but it's his job to make predictions, and predictions are... Well, not precise. Most of his predictions do have a lot of research backing them (there's a whole team behind him), so it's not like he's making baseless claims: Noooo! He's intelligent, friendly, and overall trustworthy (and good looking for a man of his age) , and he never ever would dare to state the obvious, (What's trendy at the time).
