Do We Really Need The Last of Us Part 2?

The Last of Us Part 2 is on the horizon, but is a sequel to 2013's masterful The Last of Us from Naughty Dog really necessary?

"Do We Really Need The Last of Us Part 2?"

Yes, Yes... A MILLION times, Yes

dirkdady2463d ago

Do we really need this article? No

sonarus2463d ago

Lol. It is a valid question. Last of us was such a wonderful game that ended so well it is a reasonable question to ask if a sequel is necessary. Naughty Dog has proven itself time and time and time again that i honestly feel they cant make a bad game. Not to say every game is a bonafide AAA smash but i honestly feel they cant make a bad game. Perhaps they should be working on a new ip but lets give them a chance. The first Uncharted was a pretty fantastic game till Uncharted 2 simply smashed it as best game in the series (IMO anyway). Last of Us 2 could very easily be best game in the inevitable trilogy (Sony is not going to let the franchise die. Either Naughty Dog makes it or someone else will) and i am keeping my fingers crossed for this.

Ceaser98573612463d ago

The reaction it got says it all... Hell ya ! Cant wait.. 2019 release i am expecting ...

Mr Pumblechook2462d ago

What a silly article. The game is confirmed as being made - if you don't want it don't buy it!

@Krangs_Uncle you said it perfectly.

Yup

They had that lie at the end of the first game which was obviously Neil setting up a plot point for the next game similar to how TV shows end a season with something that sets up season 2...it leaves you wanting more and starts generating hype for the next one.

Yet people STILL were like "Nah it doesn't need another game"...and they still are.

We're getting a sequel guys, it's happening and the hilarious part is knowing ND you'll play the game and love it which will change your minds.

I don't even know what this one is about and I'm like "I hope it gets a Part III to round it off as a trilogy".

generic-user-name2463d ago

While I'm happy to be getting a part II I think you're dead wrong about why we're getting it. Tlou1 absolutely could have been a standalone title, there was no dangling plot point. People keep bring up the lie as if that's a cliffhanger, it's not, watch again, Joel lies then we see Ellie's face, you can see she knows the truth just from her expression, that's what made it such a perfect and unique ending.

Sunny_D2463d ago

I agree with genuine.

I don't see Part 2 as them continuing off a cliffhanger from the first game. The game ended in a sound way. But, Neil or whoever were able to think of a new plot and figured why not?

_-EDMIX-_2462d ago

@Fox- I agree with Generic. I think it works either way.

The ending can lead into the sequel or can simply be part of the message of life.

Many things are unknown and such.

Think the Sopranos

frostypants2462d ago (Edited 2462d ago )

The ending could easily have stood on its own as the finale to it all. Life is gray...it was believable. Joel was willing to lie to protect her psychologically, and she was willing to pretend she believed him for his own sake. Still glad to see a sequel though.

rainslacker2462d ago (Edited 2462d ago )

Honestly, it's one of those games that was so well done, and ended about as perfect as it could that if it didn't get a sequel, then I wouldn't be upset.

I'm not upset we're getting one, and I think given the legendary status of the first, ND would take great care to make sure they had a solid base to create a story off of, because they wouldn't want to undermine what is likely to be their magnum opus to put them in the hall of fame of video game history.

I do disagree that they made the ending they did to set up a sequel though. I think they intentionally left it open, but at the same time, I feel they ended it in a way that kept the entire game self contained. In doing so, they kept the doors open for a sequel which could continue Joel and Ellie's story(or more likely Ellie's since I think Joel's story was completed in the first), or continue the IP with new characters. It also made it so if they didn't continue with the IP for whatever reason, people had the ending that kept the game as it's own entity, instead of part of a greater franchise.

The reason I think you're off base is that a cliffhanger type ending tends to leave the conclusion open and without resolution. TLOU ending allowed closure to the story. It's a perfectly valid way to end a series between "seasons" or releases.

Trilithon2463d ago

Yeah we need this a hell of a lot more than we need 10 thousand assassins creed games or even a Nintendo switch

ClayRules20122463d ago (Edited 2463d ago )

Don't forget to add Call of Duty to that list. Lol.

No hate intended to CoD fans. I'm genuinely glad you enjoy the games.

Trilithon2463d ago

@ClayRules2012 true! And.. no hate intended for AC or switch fans. I was a huge AC fan at first and i also want a Nintendo switch haha and COD is obviously a classic too.

ClayRules20122463d ago

I hear ya. Assasin's Creed has gone down hill over the years. I'm not holding my breath with the new one, but I'm curious.

DarXyde2463d ago

Right, because one game > an entire console that'll have great software by the time it releases.

And no, we don't NEED a sequel. The plot wrapped up pretty neatly. Naughty Dog games are great fun, but it's the narrative of The Last of Us that really pulls people in. If we don't get a sequel, that would suck, but it'd also go down as a timeless classic. No risk of disappointing anyone.

I think I am nore excited about the Factions more than anything else. The Last Of Us PvP was underrated to an extent but that is what I am waiting for. I am crossing my fingers that they are going to add a new version of that.

XanderZane2462d ago

Well, it's pretty much what the fans want. Not whether we need it or not. There have been a lot of sequels that were necessarily needed, but companies made them anyways because fans enjoyed the first or second game. So this is why there is a sequel. Don't see it as a bad thing, as it will make a mountain load of money.

Neonridr2463d ago

technically no, the first game was a masterpiece and had a very solid ending. But do we want another gem from Naughty Dog? Absolutely.

Kingthrash3602463d ago

If uncharted, crash bandicoot and jak and dax could get multiple sequel's why wouldn't tlou? Imo ND can do whatever they like, they've earned the respect and until the mess a game up they shouldn't be questioned. They are one of the most consistent devs and are arguably the best ever. People still want another jack and dax.

AspiringProGenji2463d ago (Edited 2463d ago )

I rather it stayed as a standalone classic. ND set the bar too high to themselves and and many people have reacted so overwhelmingly positive and emotional that one mistake can ruin the game and the first altogether, but I trust ND on this one. Like you said, they have earned the trust. If they think they can do more, be my guest. My wallet is ready

Neonridr2463d ago

The only problem with sequels is you take the chance of screwing around with the legacy too much and doing more harm than good. Now this is ND we are talking about, so I have the utmost faith in them. But the story as a whole was perfect as it was. Will I still get it? Absolutely, day one. Will I still enjoy it? Most definitely.

k2d2462d ago

With the amount of respect they treated TLoU - Don't Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth.

ninsigma2463d ago

I felt like the first was just all round perfect with the perfect ending and would have been fine without a sequal. Happy to be getting a 2nd as well though 😁

tyasia02463d ago

This is how I feel. I wish they had just made a new IP with that crew. personally I was hoping it was going to be Savage Starlight

ninsigma2463d ago

Yeah same here. Savage starlight would be awesome! One day maybe :)

OB1Biker2463d ago (Edited 2463d ago )

I thought so too but it looks like ND didn't finish telling us Joel and Ellie s story so they think it's needed. We can only wait and see what s up next but I feel it's the same game part II instead of a usual sequel. It was planned very early too considering the trailer was shot two years ago

rainslacker2462d ago (Edited 2462d ago )

It's always been one of those games which I thought didn't need one, but so long as they can make a good story to live up to, or surpass it, then I won't say no.

There is the risk they mess it up in the sequel, but to me, that would only be a problem for the second game, not the first. I felt the way it ended was good enough that it doesn't have to be considered part of a franchise and can stand on it's own.

@OB1

I think the new game will focus more on Ellie. I think the first game was more about Joel than Ellie, and I feel they actually closed off Joel's journey to redemption in such a way that continuing it in a big way to actually undermine what they achieved with the first game. But, Ellie has more places to go with the story, because she was young in the first, and not really the kind of character who had to have some sort of redemption like Joel did. She was an important part of the story, but for the story itself, she was an ancillary character.

That’s how it is with most movies. Why should it be any different with games?

Eonjay25d ago

It could also be that development cost were just very very low.

You almost got a version of The Last of Us 2 inspired by Bloodborne

A new The Last of Us 2 documentary reveals that Naughty Dog almost made a different version of the PS4 and PS5 game similar to Bloodborne.

Just make a new IP with the same concept. :)

toxic-inferno71d ago

Or just release a remaster of Bloodborne 😛

rippermcrip71d ago

Kind of a misleading comparison. They were simply talking about the game being melee oriented and more of an open world. I wouldn't compare a game to a soulslike based on that.

toxic-inferno71d ago

Open world in a very specific sense though. The sense of exploration and discovering shortcuts within a large, challenging area would feel great in a survival game like TLOU. But I'm sceptical it would be nearly as satisfying without the bonfire/lantern respawn system.

Inverno71d ago

A more melee oriented Last of Us 2 would've been so much better imo. The combat mechanics barely got any use from me cause everyone just shoots at you, and then the Scars with their bows are even more annoying. Level design was also more Bloodborne, and I love the level design in Souls game, there's a real sense of scale and exploration due to the branching paths. We really gotta move away from open world in the style of GTA and BoTW and do it more like Souls.

toxic-inferno71d ago

Completely agree with your final comment. Semi-linear open worlds like those in soulslikes are by far the most satisfying. Even Elden Ring (which is of course amazing) loses some of its heart due to it's open world.

70d ago
toxic-inferno70d ago

@SnarkyDoggy

Of course, my comment was my opinion, and may be different to yours.

I completely agree that Elden Ring's world is incredible. The design of every inch of its map is fantastic, with so much care that has been put into its layout and design to tell a story in the classic ambiguous way that FromSoft always manage. I would argue with anybody, any day of the week, that there is no finer example of open world design anywhere in gaming across all platforms and genres.

However, the 'heart' that I speak of is perhaps more aligned with gameplay. The more linear form of the previous games provides a distinct level of focus and determination that Elden Ring lacks due to the nature of it's open world. In Dark Souls, Bloodborne, etc. you often have between one and three bosses available to you at any time, requiring dedication and a certain level of grit. You have to learn each boss, master the techniques required and vanquish them before moving on. Between 60% and 90% of the bosses in each game generally result in this experience.

I had no such experience in Elden Ring, except for the fight against Malenia, because the nature of the open world meant that there was always something else to do and explore. The open world encouraged this, meaning that I spent most of the game over-levelled for the bosses I was facing. And I didn't even go out of my way to over-level.

To conclude, the heart of Soulsbourne games isn't inherently the difficult; it's the grit and determination required to beat them. There are other things that factor into the soulslike genre, but that gameplay loop is the real soul of the series. And Elden Ring, mostly due to it's open world, lacked that particular aspect.

As I have said, you are welcome to disagree with me! But I hope that further explains my original statement.

shinoff218371d ago

I don't think we need to move away from a gta open world style. There's room for all. I enjoy open and linear along with in between. If you have an issue I imagine it's on the devs.

Inverno71d ago

An in-between then should be considered more often. I'm just not a fan of the long stretches of land of nothing. Idk whatchu mean by the last thing tho, I like ND.

Demetrius71d ago

Def did good with their own thing I'm so over the whole copy souls combat sheesh I can dee if in certain games it would be bosses that looked like a souls boss but straight out copying the combat and feel takes away from a game that supposed to be its own lol
