Tekken 7 Review: Great franchise, terrible game | Digital Fox

Before I start getting into the details of why the new Tekken game has left me so very disappointed, I want to make some things really clear. When it comes to fighting games, the Tekken franchise has no peer. It is head and shoulders above any other one-on-one combat game, and I’ve spent a good chunk of my gaming life trying to master the insane amount of depth each character has, whilst battling out with mates for hours, often deep into the night.

Did you skip tag 2 or what?

KwietStorm341d ago

Tag 2 is not better than 5 or 7. And it's not even the same kind of fighter.

I played a lot of tag 2 and stand by my comment.

Yup, series highlights for me are 3, Tag1, 5, Tag2, and 7.

I'd add T2 to that (it was my first).

Uh what? If you mean the story mode sure but the combat in Tekken 7 is the best in the series but then again the series a tendency to steadily improve with each game.

As a massive Tekken fan (have been playing since the original on PS1) I think it's good, if a little underwhelming. Story mode is pretty bad and IMO worse than Tekken 6 Scenario Campaign, the online mode needs a revamp, (especially tournament mode, some bone-headed design choices there) connection issues and supposedly 5 bar opponents becoming 2 bar once the match starts, fewer modes than previous games, (no survival, team battle, time attack etc) customisation options are worse and more limited than Tag 2 or even Tekken 6, plenty of weird glitches like teleportation at the wall, and it's missing characters like Lei, Julia, Zafina and Marduk in favour of (arguably) less interesting new characters.

Patches will help as the game's core mechanics are as strong as ever, but it could've been a lot better. Plus I still don't get why there's no tutorial mode whatsoever given how many new additions there are to the combat like rage arts and power crushes meaning players have even more to learn and adapt to. If they want to make the game more accessible to new players, this is the way to do it, not flashy super moves.

Worse than Scenario Campaign in 6? C'mon, nothing is that bad. Sure the journalist guy was terrible but there was a lot of hype moments in that story. Pretty much everything that included Kazuya, Heihachi and Akuma was epic, especially that volcano stuff at the end.

Swiftfox341d ago

I'd ask what's the point of "hype moments" in a game if the player isn't involved in the slightest? The whole thing could have just been a 15 minute short film you unlock once you've completed the game with enough fighters.

I remember taking on Heihachi with Gouki. After 10-20 retries which suck any amount of epic out of any story, it ended with Heihachi charging up. I was supposed to use rage art but there was nothing communicated that's what I was supposed to do. Instead the move went off and after it hit Gouki auto-demon'd and the fight went back to a cinematic. What was the point? This happened again later in the game where there's no info given to the player on how to proceed.

Heck how the story flows with the player makes no sense as the player loses over and over only to finally win, just to be met with a cutscene of how the character they were controlling lost anyway. I had to beat them down enough so they could win? What? All this on top of an input-watching AI. Story is nothing next to player experience, and player experience was abysmal in this game.

This guy doesn't know his ass from his elbow especially if he thinks that Tekken 6 was better.

The only problems I have, is that they removed Bruce, and the rage stuff.
