Xbox Head Phil Spencer Responds To Sony’s Comments About Cross Platform Play, “The Door Is Open”

Cross platform play has become a huge talking point right now, with even Nintendo being on board. This whole issue started when Microsoft announced that Minecraft across all platforms would become unified, which would mean not only that all players on them would be able to play with each other, but also that all content updates would become unified, and all versions of the game would be getting improvements like better graphics and infinite worlds.

At this time Sony says No Thanks.

TheCommentator39d ago

Must... protect... consumers... from DANGER!!!

bouzebbal39d ago

Sony allowed cross play for some titles like Portal 2 last gen.

TheCommentator39d ago

Sony had BC last gen too, and also mocked MS for not supporting its fanbase with BC. What's your point have to do with them not supporting crosplay this gen?

Septic39d ago

Lol "oh but last gen......"

Yeah, we're talking this gen obviously. Sony are the culprits. It's not rocket science.

Unreal0139d ago

Septic

It's not a problem for a lot of people. All my friends are on PS4 so I couldn't care less.

Stop trying to make it into a big issue just because it's Sony, because it isn't 😂

Apocalypse Shadow39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

It's not rocket science to know that Sony has the larger community of players for rocket league and already does cross play with PC. Sony wants you to buy a PlayStation to play your console friends in rocket league because they're a business.

It's also not rocket science to see that Sony doesn't want it's community to log into Xbox live to support Microsoft trying to increase their metric numbers for player count and users on Azure.

It's also not rocket science to see that Phil and crew are only nice this gen because they're getting their @&& whooped by Sony. If leadership were reversed and Microsoft 30 million ahead, we would not be having this discussion from them.

TheCommentator39d ago

Apocalypse, I thought Sony was For the Players, yet you guys are defending Sony being For the Business instead? Lol. Nintendo isn't concerned with players needing a free XBL account, are they?

Apocalypse Shadow39d ago

Sony is for the "PlayStation players." Not Sony's job to be for the Nintendo or Microsoft players. That's the job of Nintendo and Microsoft

CernaML39d ago

So would you be alright if you were required to sign into PSN on your Xbox One? Would Microsoft be okay with that?

moldybread39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

@bouzebbal
"Sony allowed cross play for some titles like Portal 2 last gen."

Why do people keep repeating the same nonsense? Microsoft also allowed crossplay many years ago with http://n4g.com/news/2070690... like Shadowrun. THIS IS ABOUT CROSSPLAY WITH OTHER CONSOLES? Can you guys keep up?

Where were all the crossplay games with the Nintendo and Sony years ago? In 2013 Nintendo said yes to Pure Chess, Sony ignored the requests. So please tell me again how supportive Sony ever was with crossplay aside from the PC?

Sony locked its doors and wont allow anyone to leave or enter. No EA Access for you either.

@Apocalypse Shadow
"It's not rocket science to know that Sony has the larger community of players for rocket league and already does cross play with PC. Sony wants you to buy a PlayStation to play your console friends in rocket league because they're a business."

They certainly don't have the larger community for Minecraft and they just gave all PS4 gamers a big slap in the face because now they won't be getting the upgrade. But of course you guys will now just say who cares about Minecraft. A game with 55 million active users per month. Always some way to defend any decision they make.

@Apocalypse Shadow
"Sony is for the "PlayStation players." Not Sony's job to be for the Nintendo or Microsoft players. That's the job of Nintendo and Microsoft"

And PC players, don't forget about them. You know, the platform you guys keep bringing up when Xbox games are mentioned that are console exclusive. This way you can crossplay with each other in your own home.

bouzebbal39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

Moldy and Septic:

no idea why you love to say so much sh** at every occasion.

"Why do people keep repeating the same nonsense? Microsoft also allowed crossplay many years ago with http://n4g.com/news/2070690... like Shadowrun. THIS IS ABOUT CROSSPLAY WITH OTHER CONSOLES? Can you guys keep up?"
This article is about cross platform play and PC is a gaming platform.
This feature is so overrated and adds absolutely nothing. We saw it last gen already with Steam/Mac/PS3. XBL chose to remain closed they could just have opened it back then.

You guys are so desperate; looking for small crumbs to give yourselves some kind of satisfaction when problems with your broken brand are way deeper than that.

moldybread39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

@bouzebbal
"This article is about cross platform play and PC is a gaming platform."

Actually the article is a response from Phil Spencer, the Xbox lead guy. He talks about Sony's stance, you know, when they finally admitted they don't want to play with anyone else but the PC after all the PR nonsense and came up with lame excuses like protecting its users.

"This feature is so overrated and adds absolutely nothing. We saw it last gen already with Steam/Mac/PS3. XBL chose to remain closed they could just have opened it back then."

Funny you bring that up,

http://n4g.com/news/547229/...

http://n4g.com/news/682504/...

Isn't it amazing how views change over the years? Seems to me it was kind of a big deal back then, why the sudden change of heart? My oh my the flip flopping that goes on.

"You guys are so desperate; looking for small crumbs to give yourselves some kind of satisfaction when problems with your broken brand are way deeper than that."

Then why are you in this topic?

Like I've said before I'm neither for this or against it but I feel like next everyone will want cross chat, then proposed MS and PS exclusives coming to ALL consoles. Then a Unified console made by Sony, Nint & MS. This is gonna be a mess! Maybe a happy mess who knows but a mess none the less. There will always be a great divide.

rainslacker39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

It'd be nice if MS, instead of just saying "the door is open", they say what their requirements are for allowing cross play on their network. Sony isn't, but I think MS has it's own requirements which Sony isn't agreeable to. So if MS is so into it, and wants to make it a thing, maybe they should be transparent, so people that criticize understand why Sony is saying now, without them just resorting to "sony is anti-consumer" because it requires no actual thought on the subject.

I am curious why when MS says they're open to it some people are like, "Oh, MS is so cool now", but when Sony says they're open to it those same people are "DIE SONY DIE, YOU TYRANNICAL OPPRESSORS OF THE GAMING COMMUNITY!!!".

Foxhound92238d ago

Omg xbox fans are so funny. "Wahhh we want bc and crossplay wahhhh Sony is mean."

Like do people really think that Sony wants to boost MS live and Azure numbers? MS is desperate to bring people to their ecosystem, of course they are going to beg Sony for crossolay. The stipulations that MS are asking of Sony are just ridiculous.

I know MS did the same thing ALL last gen, just not even wanted to hear the discussion of cross-play at all, but goodness, that is a lame excuse Sony just gave. They're not even trying to come up with a response that makes sense as to why they aren't for crossplay, though we already know what the deal is.

Astros139d ago

Yup, now a new boss and he wants a different agenda of bringing gamers together.

U_R_Weirdos39d ago (Edited 39d ago )

Astros

More like wanting a piece of the pie from a huge community.

Ever heard of the phrase " i buy the console on which my friends play on"? And just about when their new console is taking form he starts being an advocat for crossplay. Phil knows that most consumers will still opt for ps4(or pro) because that is where their friends will probably be on in most cases, and by allowing crossplay he could catch a few more gamers who would on one side love to play with their friends on ps4 but on the other side would be willing to buy x1x as the most powerful console on the market.

Don't be fooled about spencer suddenly appearing as the knight in shiny armor fighting for the interest of gamers , when on the other hand he is advising gamers to play decade old games via bc instead of investing enough in new experiences, not to mention in games in general that make his console attractive for a wider audience.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen39d ago

Phil Spencer was part of the crew who started all of this No crossplay, timed exclusives, money hatting crap last gen. Stop deluding yourself.

EatCrow39d ago

Businesses priorities change. What's never been so clear is the intention to unify which MS is clearly working towards with PC.

Even last gen Sony didn't have many games with cross platform play... And as far as it being their initiative... Likely not.

rainslacker39d ago

Made sense to me. Sony can't moderate other networks, so they aren't agreeable to the terms.

I've explained it. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean that Sony's excuse is sorry, it just means you lack the ability to comprehend what's happening or put two and two together...even when explained in detail by others.

XtraTrstrL38d ago

It's a sorry excuse when they already do crossplay with PC a whole lot.

rainslacker38d ago

Sony provides the API to handle cross play with PC. They have control of it's implementation, and can moderate it if necessary. This is why I believe this is may be the biggest issue holding things up right now, and Jim Ryan even said that was the case, albeit with a poor example.

The thing with Mineraft is pretty apparent why Sony may have reservations.

People say, what about Rocket League? Well, the guy had it working, but it was his own implementation, not Sony's, not MS. Just because he has it working doesn't mean it'd be acceptable to either company.

Then you have the Tekken 7 director who pretty much said that it was an issue of security....of which moderation would be included in, as network security is a really broad and encompassing term.

So, as I've said, it made sense to me. It's made sense on why it may be difficult since MS suddenly became open to it.

But there are others who won't accept anything other than Sony is in the wrong, and won't even bother to consider any possibility that doesn't put all the blame solely on Sony.

2cents39d ago

This is going to be fun.
Can't wait for the rebuttal.

luckytrouble39d ago

"The door is open" because Microsoft won't open their network. Instead you have to jump into theirs to play anything with them. Playing on games with cross platform play on the Switch will mean making an Xbox Live account and basically surrendering any and all control. Is it any wonder Sony doesn't want to be part of a system that lifts control and damages their own network statistics?

Kribwalker39d ago

Rocket league runs on the rocket league servers and have nothing to do with Xbox live the rocket league devs said. How are you gonna plug that hole in this sinking ship of Sony excuses?

luckytrouble39d ago

That's different. Microsoft's method of cross play really isn't cross play. You have to log into their network, use their resources, get DLC validated on their network, and overall you are basically playing on an Xbox while playing their "cross play" titles. It is a poor excuse for cross play that cedes control from all other parties to force the use of a single network where other companies have absolutely no say.

This isn't dedicated servers where, say, the PS network connects to the same server as the Steam network, enabling those players to play together without Sony or Valve actually losing control over any part of moderation, DLC sales, etc. This is a lazy excuse for cross play that just gives Phil Spencer another reason to use his overly quoted PR speak to take sly digs at Sony for not basically bending over and letting Microsoft have their way.

The way Jim Ryan stated Sony's distaste for Microsoft's method of cross play wasn't the best, but the core of it is that Sony doesn't want to sacrifice control and basically hand Microsoft their userbase. It's bad business to lower the priority of your own network.

Kribwalker39d ago

https://www.polygon.com/e3/...

Give that a read. No Sony players having to sign in to Xbox live. Everything on rocket league servers. It's straight up Sony saying no and that's it. No other excuse.

TheUndertaker8539d ago

@segamaniaco: They're both exactly the same at the end of the day.

The only reason Sony is saying no to both is because both use their own servers. Sony would not only give up control of the games but the revenue they make in charging the same developers for using PSN based servers.

It's Sony who's worried about losing a piece of the pie plain and simple. Yet they're going to anyway as now both of those titles will receive updates later on PlayStation guaranteed along with potentially miss out on content that will be available everywhere but PlayStation.

To clear things up as well yes, to use crossplay you'd need to sign into Xbox Live. However Sony could still operate their own servers for users choosing to not use crossplay or sign into Xbox Live. It's a pure option to the user as evidenced by the already existing Android and iOS versions.

By at least agreeing to opt in they let the user decide, receive the same content & updates as the option would exist to sign into Xbox Live, then be able to better establish if the feature is wanted by PlayStation users or not.

Would that be the back door, Phil? 😂
