Minecraft's huge cross-play update is great news for games, except those on PlayStation 4. Find out why Screen Critics Shaun isn't happy at this.
“Sony's Absence From Minecraft's Cross-Play Is Absurd“ You know what’s even more absurd? Expecting Sony to follow at Microsoft’s footsteps.
that's not the point here. Now all users of Minecraft can group and play together regardless of platform. Except Sony who, according to the article, may have not wanted to be a part of it. Seems sorta silly.
Not to mention Ms owns Mc now
Some people are just ignorant or maybe just choose to be blinded by some blind fanboy loyalty, they don't seem to see how big a game Minecraft is. https://www.polygon.com/201... back in February, it was reported that 55million people play the game every month and it is still growing. Having the worst version of the game on a particular platform means most people will opt for the other versions.
"You know what’s even more absurd? Expecting Sony to follow at Microsoft’s footsteps." What a load of bullshit. Follow in their footsteps? Microsoft were critiqued for not opening up their networks before right? So now they open them up and its suddenly following MS' footsteps? Its CROSS PLATFORM play; bringing people together is what its about and defending this or blaming MS now is just plain stupid. Being able to play your MP games with mates on all platforms should be welcomed. Why make shoddy excuses?
It is silly, though MS did this ALL last gen, without hesitation. Sony being king this gen, is doing the same thing MS did for the entirety of last gen. I agree though, 2 wrongs don't make a right.
@Xtra Not really. Sony said they were open to the idea back in Gen 6. Gen 7 they stayed quiet. MS is making a concerted effort to open up play. Even if it's late credit is due where it's due. You didn't hear Sony saying anything about crossplay during Gen 7 or doing cross competitor console stuff like MS and Nintendo are doing now.
@XtraTrstrL There was cross platform on xbox 360 early in its lifecycle. Games like Shadowrun or Universe at war allowed to play with PC gamers.
@OmnislashVer36 what are you talking about gen 7 they stayed quiet they wanted cross play with rocket league but microsoft didnt want to do it for whatever reason there is still cross play with pc players on RL for ps4. I don't know why they didn't want it with MC but i'm pretty sure it was a dumb reason
@supersonicjerry you have it backwards. It was MS who wanted crossplay between x1 and Ps4 not the other way around.
Sony won't do it. With the install bases how they are, Microsoft benefits from cross play more than Sony would. It doesn't make business sense for them to do it.
Yup Sony is not gonna help MS to fill their servers and I agree on that, especially on an MS owned game. It's just not smart from Sony.
It would make business sense. How can MS,benefit from cross play? We don't NEED more ppl to play w/online. I think Sony can benefit from seeing how online is supposed to be.
I mean, it's Minecraft, it's big on all platforms. And there are a lot of new features coming only to the cross-platform consoles/devices that Minecraft players on the ps4 won't get.
It should be about whats best for gamers
what more absurd is seeing you Sony fanboys never letting go this console war crap and accept that we are all gamers
Has nothing to do with being a fan. We're talking about the business aspect of it. Sony started cross platform play and Microsoft didn't want to join. Xbox fans didn't say anything then that Microsoft closed themselves off from everyone else. Now that Sony is saying no to Microsoft trying to be perceived as the leader in cross play, now it's a problem to them. Should all multiplayer games be cross play? Yes. That would make a bigger gamer community overall. It's just not Sony's job to help Microsoft when Sony wants gamers to buy PlayStation's first. Not support Xbox, Xbox live or Azure.
@Apocalypse Shadow Do yall work of Sony? no
@apocalypse I do remember final fantasy 11 was cross play between pc/ps2/Xbox 360 at the start of the last gen. the key was it was on squares servers, but both companies have been open before, a game like minecraft that is on every platform around makes sense to have cross play across the board so Sony being the only left out looks bad on Sony. Especially when someone as closed as apple are even jumping in
@Apocalypse Shadow "Has nothing to do with being a fan. We're talking about the business aspect of it." Sony's whole success to its Playstation division is because of its fans, how about you start acting like one? "Sony started cross platform play and Microsoft didn't want to join. Xbox fans didn't say anything then that Microsoft closed themselves off from everyone else. Now that Sony is saying no to Microsoft trying to be perceived as the leader in cross play, now it's a problem to them." They started NOTHING, when are you going to get that through yoru head? Microsoft started crossplay long before with Shadowrun and then fell out of sorts with Xbox Live on the PC. Sony has never supported crossplay with other cosnoles, thats the point you and all the other executives at Sony keep glossing over. "Should all multiplayer games be cross play? Yes. That would make a bigger gamer community overall. It's just not Sony's job to help Microsoft when Sony wants gamers to buy PlayStation's first. Not support Xbox, Xbox live or Azure." The PS4 is not the one who holds the cards to helping Minecraft, that success happened long before it was ever released on it. I am just baffled the excuses you guys come up with. Is it Nintendo's job to help Microsoft? Star thinking like a gamer and we would have to put up with such nonsense from you. It's bad enough Sony has all the excuses in the world, we dont need their fans to follow suit. Sony has shown they are willing to give its fans the inferior version all out of spite. Sony can say OK to Activison and EA to host games but wont allow other consoles gamers to play with one another? Its insane the mental gymnastics Sony does to not deliver after being asked and them saying they will listen. So many developers are trying to get it done but Sony refuses and now their biggest fans want to defend them? Just embarssasing.
@Shadow, I'm not sure I get your take on how Sony would be supporting Microsoft with cross platform play. In order to be cross platform, it would require a different platform than an Xbox. This is clearly not a push to drive Xbox console sales. PlayStation fans are already buying the game from Microsoft, why not allow them to have all the features? A nice byproduct of Microsofts "illusion" they are creating that they are the leader in cross platform play is they are actually bringing cross platform play. We can all see through their deception though and know that the only company that continuously says no to it is actually the leader.
Death you are spot on, this is too keep existing players playing together, not about promoting the Xbox One or Xbox Live over the PS4. This way they all get the latest updates and the best way to play the game, how is this a bad business move? Minecraft of all games would work the best with cross play and Sony snubbing their noses at it is bad PR. The biggest player count is not the PS4 it's mobile and PC. Now Sony wants to alienate themselves from all that? 55 million active Minecraft users per month and Sony thinks this is a bad move for business?
No, what's obsurd is people defending this bullshit using "good business" as an excuse, just because Sony's the subject not joining in. I love Sony consoles and many of their exclusives, but damn, their fanbase has become disgustingly arrogant ever since the PS4 gained popularity. Makes me glad I don't bother with the majority of public multiplayer lobbies on PSN anymore, especially if getting offended at the idea of playing with other console players is how most of them now feel.
Fanboys are dumb...
Even Nintendo approved it. They are as backwards as it gets and they joined in on it.
I checked. There is no @MSfootsteps
It could come back to bite them in the ass though. MS could always release exclusive updates that only work through cross play. Then suddenly Sony are denying the worlds largest game from getting expansions on their platform. The crazy thing is that if all games were cross play then I would potentially abandon xbox altogether and move to Sony. As it is I am stuck with MS as that is where my friends/family mostly game.
They shouldn't have any issue to not allow Minecraft to cross play, but whatever... I platinumed it and dropped it years ago. This is not my fight!
That's not the point. I'm not a Minecraft fan either. This applies to other games that could be cross platform.
Other bigger games will never be cross platform. Neither who is on top will never allow it.
lol Minecraft, Is not Sony fault you MS spend a billions of dollars on aquiring Minecraft rights, and now you are trying to get back that investment by shoving in to the face of all MS gamer fans with Minecraft nonsense, why you want to include Sony in your mess MS?, please go away with your Minecraft nonsense.
One of the biggest selling games ever with an extremely large and active community and they are trying to let everyone in that community create together. What is so wrong with that?
Yeah because minecraft doesn't sell 😒
Minecraft is more valuable as a property than all of Sonys IPs combined.
There will be pitchforks and torches on your lawn tonight for that remark. Gahahaha!
Hope you put that tissue in the garbage before your mum cleans your room 343
You sound like a fool.
Dumb comments minecraft sold more than 70 million and more than 120 million if we count Pocket Edition(mobile) and have more than 55 million active users monthly.
The game sold 120 million copies and the merchadising alone makes it a good investement.
MS already made that money back Minecraft was a steal at that price.
Erm... you realise how much money minecraft makes dont you? In 2015 alone it made over $300 million for MS.
Sony Doesn't want cross-play at all. Sony is afraid because we'll destroy the PS community in just about every game!
Sony supported cross platform since FFXI on PS2
And went silent since Microsoft said they want to do it. Then remained silent when the Rocket League devs said Sony were the only ones they were waiting on for cross play. And still haven't made a peep even though Minecraft is now cross play between Xbox, PC, iPhone, and even the Switch.
PSN are all casuals. Xbox live would sh1t on them
Your out of F-ing mind. Grade school twit.
That is anti consumer. Call Sony out for it. Playing with all platforms on one Server would be FREAKING amazing
What a bunch of wankers at Sony.
One benefit for having consoles was not really having to worry about cheaters. Are there cheaters on the PC. Would we get to play on cool PC servers. Like say if counterstrike came to consoles would you get to do the custom servers with zombies, surfing, and rpg....
Afaik Sony does not like user published mods either so I doubt you would get modded maps.
I agree. I mean we are talking about CROSS PLAY here, not sales of hardware or software or popularity...but letting gamers choose where they want to play, yet bringing them together to play as one big community. I think it's am awesome idea of Microsoft wanting there Minecraft community to all play as one...the fact that Sony is against it means they aren't for the PLAYERS as they claim. Nothing good business about it...just arrogance.
so because of this they aren't fis the players? Come on man. Cool feature if it happen but let's save the melodrama for the political forums.
Well, this would be a very "pro player" move to make for its community. Nothing about it is bad. The fact that Sony is rejecting it means they only care about the players when they can monetize it. Microsoft is saying gamers can pick which platform they want with the game...why wouldn't Sony be willing to play along...
Sony being Sony. Arrogant just like their fanboys.I,guess Sony is to good to mingle with common folk
Sony is showing some serious anti-social behaviour towards their customers, that's for sure. Wonder if their fanboys will ever open their eyes and realize they are wearing PS-branded straitjackets and are stuck in a completely closed ecosystem with no freedom what so ever
After last gen and how Sony was all for cross platform play when it came to FF, I wonder what changed? Could it possibly be just them grand standing because MS had already objected to the idea back then? It's amazing that a company like Nintendo would be more open to do this before Sony and their playstation. Is there still doubt that Sony rejected the Rocket League's developer's request for cross platform play between Xbox and PS?
It's about time that consoles when playing online games became unified, sony have been set dead against it from the word go like they don't want PlayStation players to game with anyone on a different console. Times are changing and this is a big Sony screw up. most people out there have friends who either own the same console or own a different console You can bet that the conversation of ( wished we could have a game on this together) pops up somewhere, but they can't because of the different consoles, it is about time that console developers moved forward and got behind this 110% .. If it were Sony taking the charge on this and not Microsoft holding there hands out offering to do the work, you bet assured all these salty Sony fan boys would be saying g yeah man let this happen. But it isn't about who is taking the charge or who is being quiet in the room so long as the deal happens to make all consoles and online games be able to work together, so people can enjoy bigger communitys on games. You don't see people who have different types of pc going off this way, sure they own a pc, but they're still different, different developers of pc and yet it doesn't bring this kind of problem the console faces, so why should console players have a problem at all. Imagine when a game does dry up and the user base shrink, with this kind of solution it would take alot longer for that user base to shrink considering people will be connected more throughout the game.
Especially since so many games nowadays focus on online play, or are even online only. Crossplay should certainly become normal. There's a few games I'm not interested in playing on PC myself, but if I could play with friends who own consoles I'd definitely be interested in, so I think it would help third party sales since people would be able to play with friends regardless of system. It would also let dwindling online communities stay alive longer. One dwindling community doesn't have a lot of players . . . But combine 3 dwindling communities and suddenly a game would have a decent sized playerbase.
I seriously can't believe people are defending this. I hope u got dinner after being fu
What did you have for dinner after being fu?
