Screen Critics Shaun recounts his favourite first person shooter campaigns of recent times. Which games make the most of the medium?
SYNDICATE was a awesome game. Great list.
From last gen I would add Singularity, Half Life 2, Turok, and Bulletstorm. Also Resistance fall of man(all 3) and Killzone(2 and 3). Alien Isolation, Condemned 1 and 2 and of course Dishonored 1 and 2 are not really shooters but great 1st person campaigns. Also Portal 1 and 2.
Singularity was an awesome game! Heck I liked all the games you listed.
Not only was Syndicate awesome but the co-op is a hell of a lot of fun.
I played a lot of Syndicate co-op !
Played most but 2 on the list.
Definitely a good list. I wouldn't take any off the list and only add to it...
They forgot the greatest FPS of all time: "Clit Commander & The Bikini Bimbos of Camel-Toe Island"
I agree with the list overall, but one thing has bothered me since last May... Doom '16's story is not 'absolute garbage'...The story of the game, and how it is told, and what it lets you do as a player...is the back bone for the entire theme. It's subtle, and not forced on players, and can be skipped...and that is something that most of the gaming media continues to 'not get', yet the plot points and reasoning behind everything, are more well written than 95% of what the genre offers.... I can't say that is surprising, as it's unlike nearly anything made in very long time single player wise. But, anyone that liked the original games and takes the small amount of down time to read through what they're collecting; it picks apart aspects of most of them and layers on a tangible story that is as funny as it is awesome. It spends about 10 hours taking the most well known yet generic 'shooter hero' in the history of gaming and makes him something so beyond over the top that it's unavoidably great...It plays on nostalgia unlike anything remotely 'modern' has been able to accomplish...it makes the stuff you did as a kid...even better... All I mean is that Doom's single player last year was so focused that it landed outside the processing of some...It was built for fans of the originals...but had gameplay that illustrated why the genre exists today, and gameplay so well designed it didn't matter (that's the most impressive part of the title)...for people to say it's fun to play, but the story sucked...only illustrates what i'm talking about...When doom became a thing, that's how EVERYTHING was, and the new one let that continue if you wanted it to...beyond great gameplay, with some elements of story for those that really wanted it...but if you took the time, it's about as brilliant overall as a shooter gets imo.
Am I the only one who really enjoyed Crysis 3?
Seems like it.
@gbsrnctaln I enjoy it, but I thought it was the weakest in the series imo. I'm a fanboy of the series mind you. My favorite was 2 I think, i'm not sure I really liked 1 also.
I have played all these campaigns, with the exception of Syndicate. I found Battlefield 1's campaign to not be impressive at all.Battlefield 1, has poor level design, scenarios take place on conquest maps, ai is awful, and several missions feel like tutorials.
Wolfenstein: The New Order should be here!
It's been incredibly slow for me, but I'm dipping my toes into first person shooters. I just plain didn't like first person games, shooters especially. But trying some more story based rather than action based games, like everybody's gone to the rapture, and some with a healthy balance like bioshock. My mental block is starting to wear down and I find myself enjoying titles like wolfenstein and even some oldies like resistance 3. Glad I'm able to now look pass their first person perspective, I was keeping myself from some good stories and characters.
